A recurrent retrohepatic abscess secondary to a dropped appendicolith.

Radiol Case Rep

March 2024

Nottingham Digestive Diseases Centre, Division of Translational Medical Sciences, School of Medicine, University of Nottingham, Nottingham NG7 2UH, UK.

Appendicoliths can drop into the peritoneal cavity during the course of an appendicectomy, or more commonly as a result of perforated appendicitis. We report the case of a patient with a history of recurrent retrohepatic abscesses over 7-year period due to a retained appendicolith and review the literature on perihepatic abscesses caused by retained appendicoliths. The abscess had been drained percutaneously 4 times without retrieval of the appendicolith and eventually the patient needed a laparotomy, drainage of the abscess, and extraction of the appendicolith.

Objective: To provide evidence-based recommendations by assessing the available literature for optimal pain management after appendicectomy.

Design And Data Sources: This systematic review-based guideline was conducted according to the PROSPECT methodology.

Both acute and chronic pancreatitis are frequent diseases of the pancreas, which, despite being of benign nature, are related to a significant risk of malnutrition and may require nutritional support. Acute necrotizing pancreatitis is encountered in 20 % of patients with acute pancreatitis, is associated with increased morbidity and mortality, and may require artificial nutrition by enteral or parenteral route, as well as additional endoscopic, radiological or surgical interventions. Chronic pancreatitis represents a chronic inflammation of the pancreatic gland with development of fibrosis.

Recent magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) studies showed that colonic volumes in children are different between health and functional constipation. The length of the colon has however been rarely measured and principally using unphysiological colon preparations or cadaver studies. The main objective of this study was to measure the length of the undisturbed colon in children with functional constipation (FC) and healthy controls.

Controlling starch digestion in high glycaemic index staple foods such as white rice is of interest as it has been associated with reduced risk for conditions such as obesity and type-2 diabetes mellitus. Addition of hydrocolloids has been proposed to reduce the rate of post-prandial glucose by controlling the rate of starch hydrolysis. In this work, the potential of a range of hydrocolloids to modify starch digestibility when added (at 1 % maximum concentration) during cooking of white rice was first investigated.

Reproducible microbiome composition signatures of anxiety and depressive symptoms.

Comput Struct Biotechnol J

October 2023

Academic Unit of Injury, Recovery and Inflammation Sciences, Rheumatology, School of Medicine, University of Nottingham, Nottingham, UK.

The gut microbiome is a significant contributor to mental health, with growing evidence linking its composition to anxiety and depressive disorders. Gut microbiome composition is associated with signs of anxiety and depression both in clinically diagnosed mood disorders and subclinically in the general population and may be influenced by dietary fibre intake and the presence of chronic pain. We provide an update of current evidence on the role of gut microbiome composition in depressive and anxiety disorders or symptoms by reviewing available studies.

Pancreatic cysts are common incidental findings, with an estimated prevalence of 13% to 15% in imaging done for other reasons. Diagnosis often relies on collection of cyst fluid, but tissue sampling using micro-forceps may allow for a more reliable diagnosis and higher yield of DNA for next-generation sequencing (NGS). The primary aim was to assess the performance of NGS in identifying mucinous cyst.

Background: There is no evidence base to support the use of 6-monthly monitoring blood tests for the early detection of liver, blood and renal toxicity during established anti-tumour necrosis factor alpha (TNFα) treatment.

Objectives: To evaluate the incidence and risk factors of anti-TNFα treatment cessation owing to liver, blood and renal side-effects, and to estimate the cost-effectiveness of alternate intervals between monitoring blood tests.

Methods: A secondary care-based retrospective cohort study was performed.

Background & Aims: It is unclear whether health-related quality of life (HRQoL) is impaired in patients with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) without advanced fibrosis and how this compares with the general population. We aimed to assess HRQoL in patients with NAFLD in comparison to the general population and any associations of fibrosis severity and metabolic comorbidities with impairments in HRQoL.

Methods: We prospectively enrolled 513 consecutive patients with NAFLD who completed the EuroQol 5-dimensional questionnaire (EQ-5D) and Chronic Liver Disease Questionnaires (CLDQ).

Missing pieces in the jigsaw are filled in by summarising the work of others. The main theme is the biochemical, physiological and clinical problems caused by inappropriate use of saline solutions including the hyperchloraemic acidosis caused by 0.

Background & Aims: Functional constipation is the most common of the disorders of gut-brain interaction, affecting approximately 12% of the world population. Although classically considered a chronic condition, many individuals experience shorter yet repetitive bouts of constipation representing a different clinical entity. There has been increased interest in this latter disorder, which has recently been classified as occasional constipation.
