Envisioning the Future of Student Success: Report of the 2022-2023 AACP Student Affairs Standing Committee.

Over the past several years, traditional metrics have indicated declining student success within colleges and schools of pharmacy. Though students may be less well-prepared for professional school than in years past, once candidates are admitted to our institutions, we have a responsibility to effectively support their progression through the program. The 2022-2023 Student Affairs Committee was convened to evaluate and advance the construct of student success within Doctor of Pharmacy programs.

The AACP Academic Affairs Committee's Final 2022 Curricular Outcomes and Entrustable Professional Activities (COEPA) for Pharmacy Graduates to Replace 2013 CAPE and 2016 EPAs.

The American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy (AACP) Academic Affairs Committee was charged with revising both the 2013 Center for the Advancement of Pharmacy Education (CAPE) Educational Outcomes (EOs) and the 2016 Entrustable Professional Activities (EPAs). The Committee changed the document name from the CAPE outcomes to COEPA, (Curricular Outcomes and Entrustable Professional Activities) since the EOs and EPAs would now be housed together. A draft of the COEPA EOs and EPAs was released at the AACP July 2022 Annual meeting.

Using Emotional Intelligence as a Framework for Students' Professional Identity Formation.

Emotional intelligence and professional identity formation (PIF) intersect at various levels. Professional identity formation requires acute observation of others in the profession and the ability to decipher intentionality in behaviors. The developing pharmacist must make a deliberate effort to emulate positive norms and values that coincide with those associated with the profession while deliberately ignoring those that are incongruent.

Analysis of Laboratory Skills Curricula Surrounding Professional Identity Formation in Doctor of Pharmacy Students.

Objective: The purpose of this study was to describe how laboratory curricula in 6 pharmacy programs provides student pharmacist experiences to develop professional identity formation and explore personal identities.

Methods: Learning objectives for courses with laboratory components were independently reviewed and then reconciled to identify the associated historical professional identities, professional domains, and associated with personal identity from 6 pharmacy programs. Counts and frequencies for historical professional identities, domains, and personal identity associations were obtained by program and overall.

Evaluation of a murder mystery activity to teach patient communication interviewing skills.

Introduction: While gamification has been used in pharmacy education, more research is needed to establish that these methods are effective. The objective of our study was to evaluate the effectiveness of a murder mystery activity to teach patient communication and interviewing skills to first year pharmacy students in a pharmacy skills laboratory.

Methods: A non-medical murder mystery activity was used to introduce and provide practice on communication techniques needed for obtaining a medical history.

Helmet Use and Jaw and Tooth Injuries in Motorcyclists Admitted to a Referral Hospital.

Background And Aim: The use of helmets has been reported to reduce the incidence and severity of head injuries in motorcyclists. However, there remains a significant gap in knowledge regarding the effectiveness of helmets, especially in preventing jaw and tooth injuries.

Patients And Methods: In this retrospective analytical study record, all traffic accidents that occurred continuously from 2017 to 2019 in which the motorcyclists were on at least one side of the collision based on inclusion criteria.

Automated Dispensing Cabinet Overrides Should be Considered Risky, Not Routine.

The safety organization ECRI has listed overriding of safety controls in automated dispensing cabinets as one of the top 10 health technology hazards of 2023.Overrides contribute to medication errors and can harm patients, sometimes fatally. Nurses should only consider using an override in extreme emergencies.

New Treatment to Prevent Recurring Clostridioides Difficile Infections.

The Food and Drug Administration has approved a live fecal microbiota product (Rebyota) to prevent recurrence of Clostridioides difficile in adults.The product is approved for use following antibiotic treatment for recurrent episodes of C. difficile.

We Must Do Better to Ensure Equity, Transparency, and Clarity in Service Workload.

Assessment of faculty workload is challenging due to the diverse set of definitions and expectations at individual schools/colleges of pharmacy. The service component of faculty workload is complicated to assess and evaluate due to institutional variances in policies and procedures for assigning service commitments and lack of clarity in how service is regarded toward promotion and tenure decisions. This commentary discusses the challenges of service as a component of faculty workload including lack of clear definitions and time dedicated to service.

Perceptions and Practices for Evaluating Faculty Workload by Pharmacy Education Administration/Leadership.

Objective: To assess how department chairs/administrators define, measure, and evaluate faculty workload to better understand practices within the Academy.

Methods: An 18-item survey was distributed to department chairs/administrators via American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy Connect. Participants identified if they are a primary decision maker for faculty workload, whether their program has a workload policy, how workload is calculated, and how faculty satisfaction with workload equity is measured.

Concerned friends of intimate partner violence survivors: results from the myPlan randomized controlled trial on college campuses.

Background: Nearly half of intimate partner violence (IPV) survivors experience their first abusive relationship at college age (18-24 years). Most often they disclose the violence to friends. Existing college campus "bystander" interventions training peers to safely intervene have been effective in sexual assault prevention; similar interventions have rarely been tested for IPV.

New Indication for Weight Loss Drug Semaglutide.

The weight loss drug semaglutide (Wegovy) is now approved for pediatric patients ages 12 and older whose body mass index categorizes them as obese.

A new delivery mechanism provides subcutaneous infusion of furosemide to treat fluid overload in adults with heart failure.

Smart Use of Smart Infusion Pumps.

Smart infusion pumps have reduced but not eliminated medication errors. These errors are frequently related to misuse or underuse of the safety features of the pump.The Institute for Safe Medication Practices offers safety considerations for using smart pumps and suggestions for maintaining an institution's smart pump drug library.

Analytical quality-by-design approach for development and validation of HPLC method for the simultaneous estimation of omarigliptin, metformin, and ezetimibe: application to human plasma and dosage forms.

A simple, selective, and sensitive RP-HPLC method was proposed for the simultaneous determination of two co-administered antidiabetic drugs (omarigliptin and metformin) with an anti-hyperlipidemic drug (ezetimibe) in a medicinally-recommended ratio of 2.5:50:1, respectively. The proposed procedure was optimized by adopting a quality-by-design approach.

LC-MS/MS bioanalytical method for the quantitative analysis of nifedipine, bisoprolol, and captopril in human plasma: Application to pharmacokinetic studies.

In this study, the development and validation of an accurate and highly sensitive LC-MS/MS method were performed for the estimation of nifedipine, bisoprolol and captopril in real human plasma. Liquid-liquid extraction using tert-butyl methyl ether was efficiently applied for extraction of the analytes from plasma samples. Finerenone Added to Treatment Guidelines for Type 2 Diabetes and Chronic Kidney Disease.

The use of finerenone is now included in the 2022 revision to standard treatment guidelines for patients with type 2 diabetes and chronic kidney disease.Finerenone is a costly addition to standard treatment. Patients may need to receive prescription preauthorization from their insurer.

Safe Practices for Medication Administration via Enteral Tubes.

Medication errors are possible when drugs are given through enteral feeding tubes.The Institute for Safe Medication Practices has suggested strategies for reducing the common errors that can occur through use of this route of administration.

New Combination Asthma Drug.

A new asthma drug, Airsupra, combines the short-acting β2-adrenergic agonist albuterol with the corticosteroid budesonide to treat acute asthma attacks.Patients should not stop their asthma maintenance therapy when albuterol-budesonide is prescribed.

Sulfur and nitrogen co-doped carbon quantum dots as fluorescent probes for the determination of some pharmaceutically-important nitro compounds.

In this study, highly fluorescent sulfur and nitrogen co-doped carbon quantum dots (SN-CQDs) were synthesized by a simple one-pot hydrothermal method using thiosemicarbazide and citric acid as starting materials. Various spectroscopic and microscopic techniques were applied to characterize the prepared SN-CQDs. The synthesized SN-CQDs' maximum fluorescence emission was obtained at 430 nm after excitation at 360 nm.
