Background: The purpose of this study was to analysis the nostril symmetry and nasal stability following secondary rhinoplasty performed with either nasal septal cartilage implantation (G1) or simple alar cartilage suspension and internal fixation (G2) in patients with unilateral secondary cleft nasal deformity.
Methods: Nostril and alar symmetry were analyzed retrospectively in 13 consecutive patients in G1 and 17 in G2. Assessment of three indexes was first performed using photogrammetric measurements of photographs at pre-operation(T1), 7 days after repair (T2), and at least 6 months after repair (T3).
Sinonasal inverted papilloma (SNIP) is less malignant and usually occur in the maxillary sinus. However, cases invading the pterygopalatine fossa are extremely rare. In this article, we describe a rare case of a man in his early 60s who presented with left nasal congestion, headache, epistaxis, and facial numbness.

Background: The maxillary sinus, which is crucial for craniofacial growth, is the largest and earliest sinus to develop among the paranasal sinuses. Our study aimed to evaluate the maxillary sinus volume (MSV) in individuals with different sagittal skeletal patterns via cone beam computed tomography (CBCT).
Materials And Methods: In this study, CBCT images of 106 retrospectively selected patients (62 females and 42 males) were included.

Hemangiomas are benign congenital vascular tumors that commonly arise in the head and neck regions. Although they present with indolent growth and involution in most cases, they can cause facial deformities. Hemangiomas have three subtypes: capillary, cavernous, and mixed.

Background/objectives: Tissue remodeling, including dense eosinophil infiltration, is essential for forming inflammatory nasal polyps (NPs) and the pathogenesis of chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps (CRSwNP). Toxic eosinophil major basic protein (MBP) damages the sinus mucosa epithelium and lamina propria, which initiates reparative processes leading to tissue remodeling. MBP specifically binds to BMK-13 antibodies allowing immunohistochemical (IHC) tissue staining for eosinophils.

The nose maintains a central importance in both functional and aesthetic human anatomy. With such importance comes numerous possible defects with equally plentiful techniques available for repair. One of the most common causes for nasal reconstruction is Mohs micrographic surgery to excise basal and squamous cell carcinomas.

The development of nasal inverted papilloma (NIP) is closely related to human papillomavirus (HPV) infection. Previous studies indicated that HPV11 shows the highest expression in NIP tissues. However, the mechanisms following its integration into host DNA require further clarification.

Background: Many histopathologic prognostic markers, identified by routine hematoxylin and eosin (HE) staining, have been proposed for predicting the survival of patients with oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). Subsequently, several meta-analyses have been conducted on these prognostic markers. We sought to analyze the accumulated evidence from these meta-analyses.

Purpose: This study utilized cone-beam computed tomography images to assess the potential of maxillary sinus (MS) and piriform aperture (PA) measurements in sex prediction and to identify possible correlations between these structures and the MS ostium.
Methods: A total of 204 images were selected and divided into two groups: 102 for constructing and testing the formula, and 102 for validation. In each subgroup, the images were equally divided for 11 measurements by two examiners in the MS (height, width, length, and total width), PA (height and width), and maxillary ostium diameter.

Background: A significant proportion of newly diagnosed patients with hypopharyngeal carcinoma (HC) are at risk of early death and may not benefit from cancer treatments. Our objective was to assess whether an image-based evaluation of muscle mass could identify patients at risk of impaired survival.
Materials And Methods: This retrospective study consisted of male patients diagnosed with HC treated at Helsinki University Hospital between 2005 and 2014 (N = 66).

Olfactory sensitivity to odorant molecules is a complex biological function influenced by both endogenous factors, such as genetic background and physiological state, and exogenous factors, such as environmental conditions. In animals, this vital ability is mediated by olfactory sensory neurons (OSNs), which are distributed across several specialized olfactory subsystems depending on the species. Using the phosphorylation of the ribosomal protein S6 (rpS6) in OSNs following sensory stimulation, we developed an ex vivo assay allowing the simultaneous conditioning and odorant stimulation of different mouse olfactory subsystems, including the main olfactory epithelium, the vomeronasal organ, and the Grueneberg ganglion.

Recent advancements in medical management, endoscopic sinus surgery, and biologics have significantly improved outcomes for patients with chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS). However, long-term recurrence is frequently observed following endoscopic sinus surgery, with symptoms worsening after biologics are discontinued. Consequently, refractory or recurrent CRS remains a significant challenge, causing a substantial healthcare burden.

The assembly and maintenance of neural circuits is crucial for proper brain function. Although the assembly of brain circuits has been extensively studied, much less is understood about the mechanisms controlling their maintenance as animals mature. In the olfactory system, the axons of olfactory sensory neurons (OSNs) expressing the same odor receptor converge into discrete synaptic structures of the olfactory bulb (OB) called glomeruli, forming a stereotypic odor map.

Many wingless arboreal arthropods can glide back to tree trunks following free falls. However, little is known about the behaviors and aerodynamics underlying such aerial performance, and how this may be influenced by body size. Here, we studied gliding performance by nymphs of the stick insect Extatosoma tiaratum, focusing on the dynamics of J-shaped trajectories and how gliding capability changes during ontogeny.

Relatively little research has been conducted regarding Choloepus didactylus and studies that have been done have mainly covered physiology and morphology, as well as studies on its respiratory system. The objective of this study was to describe the components of the respiratory system of the two-toed sloth and compare it with other species already described in the literature. For this purpose, eight adult animals were used.

Dermoid cysts of cutaneous origin are common orbital lesions, whereas dermoid cysts of conjunctival origin are rare. The authors present a case of a dermoid cyst of conjunctival origin that was attached to the tarsus in a pediatric patient. A 2-year-old boy presented to the clinic with an approximately 2 cm in diameter mobile nodule in the upper eyelid on the temporal side that distorted the eyelid architecture with temporal ptosis.

Modern facial surgical planning and therapeutic strategies rely heavily on the precise segmentation of the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses from computed tomography (CT) images for quantitative analysis. Nevertheless, manual segmentation is labor-intensive and prone to inconsistencies, highlighting the need for automatic segmentation methods. A significant challenge in this field is the lack of publicly available clinical datasets for research.

Bevacizumab, a monoclonal antibody targeting vascular endothelial growth factor receptors, has become a widely used treatment for various types of cancer, including metastatic colorectal cancer. However, while the benefits of bevacizumab in improving survival outcomes have been well-documented, it is important to consider the potential adverse effects associated with this therapy. We report a case of a male patient in his 50s with a history of metastatic colorectal cancer who began a regimen of bevacizumab in combination with chemotherapy.
