Numerical transport models are important tools for nuclear emergency decision makers in that they rapidly provide early predictions of dispersion of released radionuclides, which is key information to determine adequate emergency protective measures. They can also help us understand and describe environmental processes and can give a comprehensive assessment of transport and transfer of radionuclides in the environment. Antibiotic resistance is one of the most urgent threats to public health. The development of antibiotic resistance can be reduced by the use of narrow-spectrum antibiotics that target specific bacteria, meaning that fewer non-harmful bacteria are killed and other harmful bacteria are not exposed to selection pressure. However, many narrow-spectrum antibiotics were introduced decades ago and therefore lack regulatory documentation in line with current standards.

The initiation of embryogenesis in the kelp Saccharina latissima is accompanied by significant anisotropy in cell shape. Using monoclonal antibodies, we show that this anisotropy coincides with a spatio-temporal pattern of accumulation of alginates in the cell wall of the zygote and embryo. Alginates rich in guluronates as well as sulphated fucans show a homogeneous distribution in the embryo throughout Phase I of embryogenesis, but mannuronate alginates accumulate mainly on the sides of the zygote and embryo, disappearing as the embryo enlarges at the start of Phase II.

The interaction of Ni with (6,0) and (8,0) zigzag carbon nanotube exterior surfaces containing two vacancies was studied using density functional theory (DFT). A two-vacancy defect was analysed in order to anchor Ni, and the pristine nanotube was also considered as a reference for each chirality. The adsorbed Ni stability and the nanotube's geometry and electronic structure were analysed before and after the adsorption.

This study aimed to test the use of Rietveld refinement on respirable aerosol samples to determine the phase of respirable crystalline silica (RCS) and other minerals. The results from the Rietveld refinement were compared to an external standard method and gravimetrical measurements. Wood-degrading brown-rot fungi primarily target carbohydrates, leaving the lignin modified and potentially valuable for valorization. Here, we report a comprehensive comparison of how degrades hardwood and softwood, which have fundamentally different lignin structures. Primary sludge can serve as an internal carbon source for denitrification in wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). This study explores the use of alkaline treatment to produce a fermentation broth from primary sludge, which predominantly contains short-chain volatile fatty acids (VFAs), with acetic acid and propionic acid making up over 65% of the total VFAs. The performance of this fermentation broth as a sole carbon source for denitrification was compared with that of sodium acetate, acetic acid, methanol, and ethanol in both biofilm and activated sludge systems.

Background: Kombucha, a fermented beverage obtained from a Symbiotic Culture of Bacteria and Yeast (SCOBY), has shown potential in modulating gut microbiota, although no clinical trials have been done.
Objective: We aimed to evaluate the effects of regular black tea kombucha consumption on intestinal health in individuals with and without obesity.
Methods: A pre-post clinical intervention study was conducted lasting eight weeks.
Metagenomics, particularly genome-resolved metagenomics, has significantly deepened our understanding of microbes, illuminating their taxonomic and functional diversity and roles in ecology, physiology, and evolution. However, eukaryotic populations within various microbiomes, including those in the mammalian gastrointestinal (GI) tract, remain relatively underexplored in metagenomic studies due to the lack of comprehensive reference genome databases and robust bioinformatics tools. The GI tract of ruminants, particularly the rumen, contains a high eukaryotic biomass although a relatively low diversity of ciliates and fungi, which significantly impacts feed digestion, methane emissions, and rumen microbial ecology.

There is a need for rigorous and scientifically-based testing standards for existing and new enteric methane mitigation technologies, including antimethanogenic feed additives (AMFA). The current review provides guidelines for conducting and analyzing data from experiments with ruminants intended to test the antimethanogenic and production effects of feed additives. Recommendations include study design and statistical analysis of the data, dietary effects, associative effect of AMFA with other mitigation strategies, appropriate methods for measuring methane emissions, production and physiological responses to AMFA, and their effects on animal health and product quality.

Over a decade since its discovery, piscine myocarditis virus (PMCV) remains a significant pathogen in Atlantic salmon aquaculture. Despite this significant impact, the genomic landscape, evolutionary dynamics, and virulence factors of PMCV are poorly understood. Although cellulose has received the most attention, further research is needed for a complete comprehension of other fiber components in forage and nonforage fiber sources corresponding with the array of enzymes needed for depolymerization and resulting fermentation of sugars. The carbohydrate-active enzymes (CAZymes) have been described in detail herein, although new information will no doubt accumulate in the future. Known CAZymes are attributed to taxa that are easily detected via 16S rRNA gene profiling techniques, but such approaches have limitations.

The aim of this study was to examine how silages from different grassland species and harvesting frequencies affect feed intake, milk production, and methane (CH) emission in dairy cows. We hypothesized that cows consuming silages of more frequent harvest, grass species with greater organic matter digestibility and legumes with lower NDFom concentration would have greater silage dry matter intake and milk yield and thereby lower CH yield and intensity. Teleost B cells producing neutralizing antibodies contribute to protection against salmonid alphavirus (SAV) infection, the etiological agent of pancreas disease, thereby reducing mortality and disease severity.
