The aim of this study was to evaluate if high barrier recyclable material polyethylene/ethylene vinyl alcohol (PE/EVOH) can be an alternative non-recyclable polyamides (PA)/PE laminate and also if high barrier is required or recyclable PE material with low barrier properties is good enough to maintain the quality of thermally processed mashed potato and ground carrot. The oxygen transmission rate (OTR) of the PA/PE and PE films decreased after heat treatment, while no change was observed for PE/EVOH films. Food contact did not impact the OTR of PA/PE and PE/EVOH films, while the OTR of PE films decreased.

This study shows for the first time the feasibility of Raman spectroscopy as a non-destructive method to follow the ripening process of apple fruits. Two different varieties of apples were studied: 'Aroma' and 'Elstar'. By visual inspection, Raman spectra showed that the starch content was higher in 'Elstar' apples compared to 'Aroma'.

Background: The large amounts of iodine in brown seaweeds may contribute towards an adequate iodine intake, but also pose a food safety risk. In the current work we estimate the maximum amount of the cultivated brown seaweeds Saccharina latissima and Alaria esculenta (blanched and non-blanched) that can be added to white loaf-type wheat-bread so European consumers are protected against excessive chronic intakes. We use data for high-level consumers of bread with special ingredients added from the EFSA comprehensive European food consumption database to construct a conservative risk management model.

The main objective of this study was to design, build, and test a compact, multi-well, portable dry film FTIR system for industrial food and bioprocess applications. The system features dry film sampling on a circular rotating disc comprising 31 wells, a design that was chosen to simplify potential automation and robotic sample handling at a later stage. Calibration models for average molecular weight (AMW, 200 samples) and collagen content (68 samples) were developed from the measurements of industrially produced protein hydrolysate samples in a controlled laboratory environment.

Studies of the interplay between metabolism and immunity, known as immunometabolism, is steadily transforming immunological research into new understandings of how environmental cues like diet are affecting innate and adaptive immune responses. The aim of this study was to explore antiviral transcriptomic responses under various levels of polyunsaturated fatty acid. Atlantic salmon kidney cells (ASK cell line) were incubated for one week in different levels of the unsaturated n-3 eicosapentaneoic acid (EPA) resulting in cellular levels ranging from 2-20% of total fatty acid.

Background: The accuracy of genomic prediction is partly determined by the size of the reference population. In Atlantic salmon breeding programs, four parallel populations often exist, thus offering the opportunity to increase the size of the reference set by combining these populations. Methods: Preadolescents' taste sensitivity was measured by detection threshold of sweetness (sucrose), sourness (citric acid), saltiness (sodium chloride), bitterness (caffeine, quinine), and umami (monosodium glutamate).

The principles of three Rs-REPLACEMENT, REDUCTION, and REFINEMENT-govern the protection and use of animals, including fish, for research purposes in the European Union and Norway. In this paper, we discuss some straightforward steps to simplify the delivery of these principles at the idea stage and adapt some of these examples for conducting fish trials related to health and welfare. Although some of the approaches are well established in other animal science arenas, we believe there can be a timely recap of their key facets.

When vibrational spectroscopy is used for quantification purposes, multivariate analysis is often used to extract information from covariances between the spectra and any given reference values. In complex samples, there is a high risk that the constituents covary with each other.
