The aim of this study was to evaluate if high barrier recyclable material polyethylene/ethylene vinyl alcohol (PE/EVOH) can be an alternative non-recyclable polyamides (PA)/PE laminate and also if high barrier is required or recyclable PE material with low barrier properties is good enough to maintain the quality of thermally processed mashed potato and ground carrot. The oxygen transmission rate (OTR) of the PA/PE and PE films decreased after heat treatment, while no change was observed for PE/EVOH films. Food contact did not impact the OTR of PA/PE and PE/EVOH films, while the OTR of PE films decreased.

This study shows for the first time the feasibility of Raman spectroscopy as a non-destructive method to follow the ripening process of apple fruits. Two different varieties of apples were studied: 'Aroma' and 'Elstar'. By visual inspection, Raman spectra showed that the starch content was higher in 'Elstar' apples compared to 'Aroma'.

Background: The large amounts of iodine in brown seaweeds may contribute towards an adequate iodine intake, but also pose a food safety risk. In the current work we estimate the maximum amount of the cultivated brown seaweeds Saccharina latissima and Alaria esculenta (blanched and non-blanched) that can be added to white loaf-type wheat-bread so European consumers are protected against excessive chronic intakes. We use data for high-level consumers of bread with special ingredients added from the EFSA comprehensive European food consumption database to construct a conservative risk management model.

The main objective of this study was to design, build, and test a compact, multi-well, portable dry film FTIR system for industrial food and bioprocess applications. The system features dry film sampling on a circular rotating disc comprising 31 wells, a design that was chosen to simplify potential automation and robotic sample handling at a later stage.
