In this study, we investigated the influence of host genetics and environmental microbiomes on the early gut microbiome of Atlantic salmon. We aimed at rearing the fish in either r- or K-selected environments, where the r-selected environment would be expected to be dominated by fast-growing opportunistic bacteria and thus represent more detrimental microbial environment than the K-selected water. Increased industrial offshore activities in northern waters raise the question of impact of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) on key Arctic marine species. One of these is the ecologically important polar cod (Boreogadus saida), which is the primary food source for Arctic marine mammals and seabirds. In the present work, we have conducted the first comprehensive proteomics study with this species by exploring the effects of dietary PAH exposure on the hepatic proteome, using benzo[a]pyrene (BaP) as a PAH model-compound.

The presence of the long-lived radionuclides Cs and Sr in ecosystems is a major environmental concern because bioavailable forms of the radionuclides are readily transferred to living organisms. The present study investigated how holometabolous insect development influences the fate of radiocaesium and radiostrontium by examining the behaviour of tracers (Cs and Sr) and stable elements during the larval feeding stage (21-23 days old), the pupal stage, and the adult stage. We aimed to evaluate the degree to which an herbivore or a detritivore food chain could serve as transfer pathways to higher trophic levels in terms of accumulation potential, and during which stage of development the accumulation potential is highest.

Nutrient deprivation is a major trigger of autophagy, a conserved quality control and recycling process essential for cellular and tissue homeostasis. In a high-content image-based screen of the human ubiquitome, we here identify the E3 ligase Pellino 3 (PELI3) as a crucial regulator of starvation-induced autophagy. Research over the past 20 years indicates the amount of task-specific walking practice provided to individuals with stroke, brain injury, or incomplete spinal cord injury can strongly influence walking recovery. However, more recent data suggest that attention towards 2 other training parameters, including the intensity and variability of walking practice, may maximize walking recovery and facilitate gains in non-walking outcomes. The combination of these training parameters represents a stark contrast from traditional strategies, and confusion regarding the potential benefits and perceived risks may limit their implementation in clinical practice.
