The COVID-19 pandemic has underscored the importance of virus surveillance in public health and wastewater-based epidemiology (WBE) has emerged as a non-invasive, cost-effective method for monitoring SARS-CoV-2 and its variants at the community level. Unfortunately, current variant surveillance methods depend heavily on updated genomic databases with data derived from clinical samples, which can become less sensitive and representative as clinical testing and sequencing efforts decline. In this paper, we introduce HERCULES (High-throughput Epidemiological Reconstruction and Clustering for Uncovering Lineages from Environmental SARS-CoV-2), an unsupervised method that uses long-read sequencing of a single 1 Kb fragment of the Spike gene.

Mitigating loss of genetic diversity is a major global biodiversity challenge. To meet recent international commitments to maintain genetic diversity within species, we need to understand relationships between threats, conservation management and genetic diversity change. Here we conduct a global analysis of genetic diversity change via meta-analysis of all available temporal measures of genetic diversity from more than three decades of research.

Introduction: Emergency care begins in the community, who are often the first on the scene. Where emergency care systems are nascent or absent, bystanders represent the only prehospital emergency care that victims might receive. It is important to equip bystanders through life-saving skills training (LST).

Multivariate pattern analysis was recently extended with covariate projections to solve the challenging task of modelling and interpreting associations in the presence of linear dependent multivariate covariates. Within a joint model, this approach allows quantification of the net association pattern between the outcome and the explanatory variables and between the individual covariates and these variables. The aim of this paper is to apply this methodology to establish the net multivariate association pattern between cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) and a high-resolution linear dependent physical activity (PA) intensity descriptor derived from accelerometry in children and to validate the crucial sub-regions in the PA spectrum predicting CRF.

Granulocyte colony stimulating factor (G-CSF) has been shown in mammalia to activate a series of signal transduction systems and exert various biological effects, such as controlling the differentiation, proliferation, and survival of granulocytes, promoting the movement of hematopoietic stem cells from the bone marrow to the bloodstream, and triggering the development of T cells, dendritic cells, and immune tolerance in transplants. In this study, the mRNA of flounder G-CSF (PoG-CSF) and its receptor (PoGCSFR) were detected and widely expressed in all examined tissues with the highest expression in peritoneal cells. G-CSF and GCSFR cells were observed to be abundantly distributed in the leukocytes from the peritoneal cavity, followed by head kidney.

Fishing gears are conventionally made from non-biodegradable materials including polyamide (PA). When lost in the ocean, these gears have long-lasting impacts, including marine littering, microplastics production, leaching of chemicals, and an extended period of ghost fishing due to its durability. The use of biodegradable co-polyester material such as polybutylene succinate co-adipate-co-terephthalate (PBSAT) and polybutylene succinate-co-butylene adipate (PBSA) as fishing gear materials have been considered as a potential solution to reduce the associated impact.

The stone marten (Martes foina) is an important species for cytogenetic studies in the order Carnivora. ZooFISH probes created from its chromosomes provided a strong and clean signal in chromosome painting experiments and were valuable for studying the evolution of carnivoran genome architecture. The research revealed that the stone marten chromosome set is similar to the presumed ancestral karyotype of the Carnivora, which added an additional value for the species.

CaSiO[Formula: see text] perovskite (CaPv) is the last major mineral in the Earth's lower mantle whose elasticity remains largely unresolved. Here, we investigate the elasticity of CaPv using ab initio machine-learning force fields (MLFF). At room temperature, the elasticity of tetragonal CaPv determined by MLFF molecular dynamics (MD) agrees well with experimental measurements after considering temperature induced variations in the hydrostatic structure, proving the effectiveness of the method.

Persistent homology applied to the activity of grid cells in the Medial Entorhinal Cortex suggests that this activity lies on a toroidal manifold. By analyzing real data and a simple model, we show that neural oscillations play a key role in the appearance of this toroidal topology. To quantitatively monitor how changes in spike trains influence the topology of the data, we first define a robust measure for the degree of toroidality of a dataset.

Z boson events at the Large Hadron Collider can be selected with high purity and are sensitive to a diverse range of QCD phenomena. As a result, these events are often used to probe the nature of the strong force, improve Monte Carlo event generators, and search for deviations from standard model predictions. All previous measurements of Z boson production characterize the event properties using a small number of observables and present the results as differential cross sections in predetermined bins.
