Maternal sepsis accounts for 11% of all maternal deaths worldwide. It is the third most common direct cause of maternal death and is a major contributor to other common causes of maternal death, such as haemorrhage and thromboembolism. This review addresses important topics, including the epidemiology, risk factors, prevention, diagnosis, care bundles and management of maternal sepsis, including antibiotic treatment, and critical care interventions such as extracorporeal membrane oxygenation.

In this study, we characterised the effect that seeding keratinocytes on the papillary and reticular dermis had on the extracellular matrix and tissue integrity ex vivo. Human skin explants from consented patients (n = 6) undergoing routine surgery were cultured at a liquid-air interface, dermal-side up, and autologous keratinocytes seeded on the exposed papillary or reticular layer. After 7-21 days, histological and immunohistochemical evaluation of the morphology and extracellular matrix was performed.

Objective: This systematic review aims to identify, critically appraise and summarize the results of studies examining the relationship between the vaginal microbiota and preterm birth (PTB).

Methods: We searched the electronic databases Medline, EMBASE and the Cochrane Controlled Register of Trials for studies in any language reporting on vaginal microbiota and PTB published from 1990 to November 29th, 2017. We included any study that performed lower genital tract microbiota assessment in asymptomatic pregnant women and reported on spontaneous preterm birth, with either intact or ruptured membranes.

Objective: The objective was to provide an update of progress made over time (including personal reflection) of our attempts to reduce the mortality and morbidity associated with spontaneous preterm labour that leads to preterm birth.

Methods: An experienced and evidence based approach was taken to provide an overview of progress made over a generation (∼40 years) in our understanding of spontaneous preterm labour.

Results: It is evident that we have made significant progress in our understanding of the aetiology, the measurement of the burden, the basic science, systems biology and mechanical pathways of the preterm parturition syndrome.

Objective: To describe midwives' and obstetricians' experiences on the level of support from colleagues and managers in Danish labor wards following adverse events.

Design, Setting And Participants: A 2012 National survey of Danish obstetricians and midwives was conducted to assess the level of support received in the workplace.

Main Outcome Measures: Scales on social community at work, social support from colleagues and immediate superiors, and use of support mechanisms on labor wards after serious adverse events were assessed.

This study explored the feasibility of constructing a tissue engineered muscle layer in the oesophagus using oesophageal acellular matrix (OAM) scaffolds and human aortic smooth muscle cells (hASMCs) or human adipose-derived stem cells (hASCs). The second objective was to investigate the effect of hypoxic preconditioning of seeding cells on cell viability and migration depth. Our results demonstrated that hASMCs and hASCs could attach and adhere to the decellularized OAM scaffold and survive and proliferate for at least 7 days depending on the growth conditions.

The control of osteoblast/osteoclast cross-talk is crucial in the bone remodelling process and provides a target mechanism in the development of drugs for bone metabolic diseases. Osteoprotegerin is a key molecule in this biosignalling pathway as it inhibits osteoclastogenesis and osteoclast activation to prevent run-away bone resorption. This work reports the synthesis of a known osteoprotegerin peptide analogue, YCEIEFCYLIR (OP3-4), and its tagging with a gadolinium chelate, a standard contrast agent for magnetic resonance imaging.

Patients with laryngeal disorders may have severe morbidity relating to swallowing, vocalization, and respiratory function, for which conventional therapies are suboptimal. A tissue-engineered approach would aim to restore the vocal folds and maintain respiratory function while limiting the extent of scarring in the regenerated tissue. Under Good Laboratory Practice conditions, we decellularized porcine larynges, using detergents and enzymes under negative pressure to produce an acellular scaffold comprising cartilage, muscle, and mucosa.

Guilt without fault: A qualitative study into the ethics of forgiveness after traumatic childbirth.

When a life is lost or severely impaired during childbirth, the midwife and obstetrician involved may experience feelings of guilt in the aftermath. Through three empirical cases, the paper examines the sense of guilt in the context of the current patient safety culture in healthcare where a blame-free approach is promoted in the aftermath of adverse events. The purpose is to illustrate how healthcare professionals may experience guilt without being at fault after adverse events, and Gamlund's theory on forgiveness without blame is used as the theoretical framework for this analysis.

Preterm birth is the major cause of perinatal mortality and morbidity worldwide. Infection/inflammation is responsible for a significant percentage of preterm birth, particularly at early gestations. A recent clinical recommendation by a guidelines group of the Danish Society of Obstetrics and Gynecology advised against the use of clindamycin for the treatment of bacterial vaginosis in pregnancy to reduce the risk of spontaneous preterm birth based on lack of evidence of efficacy.

Biocompatibility of two newly developed porcine skin scaffolds was assessed after 3, 14, 21 and 90 days of implantation in rats. Both scaffolds showed absence of cells, preservation of ECM and mechanical properties comparable to non-decellularised skin before implantation. Host cell infiltration was much prominent on both scaffolds when compared to Permacol (surgical control).

As biocompatible matrices, porcine dermal scaffolds have limited application in tissue engineering due to rapid degradation following implantation. This study compared the physical, chemical and biomechanical changes that occurred when genipin and quercetin were used to crosslink dermal scaffolds and to determine whether quercetin could be used as an alternative to genipin.
