The development of new treatments for older patients with acute myeloid leukemia is an active area, but has met with limited success. Vosaroxin, a quinolone-derived intercalating agent has several properties that could prove beneficial. Initial clinical studies showed it to be well-tolerated in older patients with relapsed/refractory disease.

Colorectal cancer (CRC) exhibits differences in incidence, pathogenesis, molecular pathways and outcome depending on the location of the tumor. This review focuses on the latest developments in epidemiological and scientific studies, which have enhanced our understanding on the underlying genetic and immunological differences between the proximal (right-sided) colon and the distal (left-sided) colorectum. The different ways in which environmental risk factors influence the pathogenesis of CRC depending on its location and the variations in surgical and oncological outcomes are also discussed in this review.

Background: Traditional and complementary healthcare approaches (TCA) are widely used for children, often because of perceived safety. Honey is a traditional remedy for upper respiratory tract symptoms in infants. Health officials currently advise limiting honey use because of the risk of botulism.

In this chapter, we describe the key procedures for isolation of the oligosaccharides and the preparation of neoglycolipid probes together with expression of malectin that have enabled the discovery of the highly selective binding of this newly described protein in the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) to a diglucosyl high-mannose N-glycan. This is the first indication of a bioactivity for a diglucosyl high-mannose N-glycan of the type that occurs in the ER of eukaryotic cells and which is an intermediate in the early steps of the N-glycosylation pathway of nascent proteins. The malectin story is an example of a powerful convergence of disciplines in biological sciences: (i) developmental biology, (ii) bioinformatics, (iii) recombinant protein expression, (iv) protein structural studies, (v) glucan biochemistry, and (vi) drug-assisted engineering of oligosaccharide biosynthesis, culminating in (vii) oligosaccharide "designer" microarrays, to clinch the remarkable selectivity of the binding of this newly discovered ER protein.

Aim: To assess the impact of a purpose-built, short stay paediatric ambulatory care unit (PACU) on the patient journey and perceptions of parents, staff and referrers.
Methods: Multi-method evaluation, including a parent survey (n = 104), patient journey mapping (n = 10), staff interviews (n = 10), a referrer survey (n = 16), routine activity analysis, and a comparison with the A&E service (A&E parent survey: n = 41).
Results: Almost all parents attending PACU (94%) were satisfied with the service and significantly more likely to feel "very" satisfied than parents attending A&E (PACU: 51%, A&E: 31%; p = 0.

Heparin lyases are valuable tools for generating oligosaccharide fragments and in sequence determination of heparan sulfate (HS). Heparin lyase III is known to cleave the linkages between N-acetylglucosamine (GlcNAc) or N-sulfated glucosamine (GlcNS) and glucuronic acid (GlcA) as the primary sites and the linkages between GlcNAc, GlcNAc(6S), or GlcNS and iduronic acid as secondary sites. N-Unsubstituted glucosamine (GlcN) occurs as a minor component in HS, and it has been associated with various bioactivities.
