Myocardial microvasculature and haemodynamics are indicative of potential microvascular diseases for patients with symptoms of coronary heart disease in the absence of obstructive coronary arteries. However, imaging microvascular structure and flow within the myocardium is challenging owing to the small size of the vessels and the constant movement of the patient's heart. Here we show the feasibility of transthoracic ultrasound localization microscopy for imaging myocardial microvasculature and haemodynamics in explanted pig hearts and in patients in vivo.

Auricular reconstruction remains a challenging procedure, requiring a high degree of manual dexterity and attention to detail in order to reconstruct the complex three-dimensional geometry of the ear successfully. Most techniques will rely on autologous cartilage for auricular framework fabrication, carrying a risk of donor and recipient site morbidity. The aim of this report is to investigate the complications and aesthetic outcomes associated with autologous cartilage harvest in auricular reconstruction.

Lethal phenotypes in Mendelian disorders.

Genet Med

July 2024

William Harvey Research Institute, Queen Mary University of London, London, United Kingdom. Electronic address:

Purpose: Existing resources that characterize the essentiality status of genes are based on either proliferation assessment in human cell lines, viability evaluation in mouse knockouts, or constraint metrics derived from human population sequencing studies. Several repositories document phenotypic annotations for rare disorders; however, there is a lack of comprehensive reporting on lethal phenotypes.

Methods: We queried Online Mendelian Inheritance in Man for terms related to lethality and classified all Mendelian genes according to the earliest age of death recorded for the associated disorders, from prenatal death to no reports of premature death.

Article Synopsis
  • This study compares two surgical methods, Hartmann's procedure (HP) and resection with primary anastomosis (RPA), for treating acute left-sided colonic emergencies among 1215 patients from 204 centers globally.
  • Results showed that while HP was the more common treatment (57.3%), RPA was favored for younger patients with fewer health issues and those needing surgery sooner.
  • The study concluded that although HP is still widely used, RPA might be the better option, emphasizing the importance of patient characteristics and surgeon experience in determining treatment choice.

In 1990, the United States' Institute of Medicine promoted the principles of outcomes monitoring in the alcohol and other drugs treatment field to improve the evidence synthesis and quality of research. While various national outcome measures have been developed and employed, no global consensus on standard measurement has been agreed for addiction. It is thus timely to build an international consensus.

Use of Integra® on avascular tissue.

Br J Oral Maxillofac Surg

May 2024

Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Northwick Park Hospital, London, UK.

Integra® (Integra LifeSciences) is a well-known dermal regeneration template used in partial and full-thickness wound reconstruction. It can be applied directly on to vascular tissue to create a bed for a skin graft, which is often placed in a second surgery. We present our experience of its novel use in oral and maxillofacial surgery patients, using it directly on bone and cartilage (avascular tissue) without further skin grafting.

Introduction: Between 2009/2010 and 2019/2020, England witnessed an increase in suspected head and neck cancer (sHNC) referrals from 140 to 404 patients per 100 000 population. 1 in 10 patients are not seen within the 2-week target, contributing to patient anxiety. We will develop a pathway for sHNC referrals, based on the Head and Neck Cancer Risk Calculator.

Menke-Hennekam syndrome; delineation of domain-specific subtypes with distinct clinical and DNA methylation profiles.

HGG Adv

July 2024

Department of Pediatrics, Emma Children's Hospital, Amsterdam UMC, University of Amsterdam, Amsterdam Reproduction and Development Research Institute, 1105 Amsterdam, AZ, the Netherlands. Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • CREB-binding protein (CBP) and E1A-associated protein (p300) are crucial for histone acetylation and gene regulation; mutations in these proteins lead to conditions like Rubinstein-Taybi syndrome (RSTS) and Menke-Hennekam syndrome (MKHK).
  • A study on 82 individuals with CBP/p300 variants revealed distinct phenotypes and identified three subtypes of MKHK based on specific protein domains (ZZ, TAZ2, and ID4), rather than the genes themselves.
  • DNA methylation profiles showed characteristic patterns associated with the different protein domains, allowing for better classification and understanding of the molecular mechanisms behind these syndromes.
