Protracted postsurgical inflammation leading to postoperative complications remains a persistent problem in urethral reconstruction. Nanofibers in the form of peptide amphiphiles expressing anti-inflammatory peptides (AIF-PA) have positively modulated local inflammatory responses. Urethroplasty is performed to repair 5 mm ventral urethral defects with: uncoated small intestinal submucosa (SIS); SIS dip-coated with AIF-PA1 (anti-inflammatory treatment), or SIS dip-coated with AIF-PA6 (control) on 12-week-old male Sprague Dawley rats (n = 6/group/timepoint).

Background: Conventional diet assessment approaches such as the 24-hour self-reported recall are burdensome, suffer from recall bias, and are inaccurate in estimating energy intake. Wearable sensor technology, coupled with advanced algorithms, is increasingly showing promise in its ability to capture behaviors that provide useful information for estimating calorie and macronutrient intake.

Objective: This paper aimed to summarize current technological approaches to monitoring energy intake on the basis of expert opinion from a workshop panel and to make recommendations to advance technology and algorithms to improve estimation of energy expenditure.

Pediatric patients with a neurogenic urinary bladder, caused by developmental abnormalities including spina bifida, exhibit chronic urological problems. Surgical management in the form of enterocystoplasty is used to enlarge the bladder, but is associated with significant clinical complications. Thus, alternative methods to enterocystoplasty have been explored through the incorporation of stem cells with tissue engineering strategies.

During anti-phased locomotor tasks such as cycling or walking, hemiparetic phasing of muscle activity is characterized by inappropriate early onset of activity for some paretic muscles and prolonged activity in others. Pedaling with the paretic limb alone reduces inappropriate prolonged activity, suggesting a combined influence of contralesional voluntary commands and movement-related sensory feedback. Five different non-target leg movement state conditions were performed by 15 subjects post-stroke and 15 nonimpaired controls while they pedaled with the target leg and EMG was recorded bilaterally.

Recent studies have determined a seemingly consistent feature of able-bodied level ground walking, termed the roll-over shape, which is the effective rocker (cam) shape that the lower limb system conforms to between heel contact and contralateral heel contact during walking (first half of the gait cycle). The roll-over shape has been found to be largely unaffected by changes in walking speed, load carriage, and shoe heel height. However, it is unclear from previous studies whether persons are controlling their lower limb systems to maintain a consistent roll-over shape or whether this finding is a byproduct of their attempt to keep ankle kinematic patterns similar during the first half of the gait cycle.
