Background: Some chiropractors use spinal x-rays to inform care, but the relationship between radiographic findings and outcomes is unclear. This study examined the association between radiographic findings and 30% improvement in back-related disability in older adults after receiving 12 weeks of chiropractic spinal manipulation and home exercise instruction.

Methods: This IRB-approved secondary analysis used randomized trial data of community-dwelling adults age ≥ 65 with chronic spinal pain and disability.

Examining Resilient Pain Behaviors for Chronic Low Back Pain: A Scoping Review.

Objectives: The objective of this scoping review was to examine resilience and resilient pain behaviors for those with CLBP in relation to resilience definitions, operationalization (e.g. trait or behavior), and application of theoretical frameworks.

A brief physiology and pathophysiology of the anorectum based on the Integral Theory paradigm.

The remit of this review is confined to the experimental scientific works and surgeries based on the Integral Theory paradigm. The video abstract summarizes the anorectal function, how ligaments cause dysfunction and cure of fecal incontinence and obstructed defecation by ligament repair. A practical ligament-based diagnostic system for cure of pelvic symptoms and prolapse.

The Integral Theory Paradigm (ITP) has a 25-year track record of successfully treating bladder/bowel/pain symptoms caused by laxity in specific ligaments, even when the prolapse is minimal. The ITP-based treatment involves ligament support and can be nonsurgical or daycare surgical. An accurate diagnostic protocol is required.

Qualitative Assessment CIH Institutions' Engagement With Underserved Communities to Enhance Healthcare Access and Utilization.

Background: In North America, there is a notable underutilization of complementary and integrative health approaches (CIH) among non-White and marginalized communities.

Objectives: This study sought to understand how CIH educational instutitions are proactively working to redress this disparity in access and utilization among these communities.

Methods: We conducted interviews with 26 key informants, including presidents, clinicians, and research deans across 13 CIH educational institutions across the US and Canada.

Combined transaortic/transapical left ventricular septal myectomy for subaortic and midventricular obstruction in a paediatric patient.

The patient is a 15-year-old girl who was diagnosed with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and has been symptomatic due to severe left ventricular outflow tract obstruction. Combined transaortic and transapical left ventricular septal myectomy was performed to relieve the left ventricular outflow tract obstruction and address both subaortic and midventricular gradients.

Building Bridges Toward Common Goals - A Call for Greater Collaboration Between Public Health and Integrative, Complementary and Traditional Health Providers.

This commentary makes the case for greater collaboration between public health professionals and integrative, complementary and traditional health practitioners (ICTHP). Previous partnerships have been successful, and more such collaborative work is needed to help overcome division, enhance the health workforce, and move all involved toward shared goals. ICTHP providers may be uniquely able to work across ideological differences and engage individuals and communities who are less trusting of public health, including those who are vaccine hesitant.

Guided Metabolic Detoxification Program Supports Phase II Detoxification Enzymes and Antioxidant Balance in Healthy Participants.

Adequate antioxidant supply is essential for maintaining metabolic homeostasis and reducing oxidative stress during detoxification. The emerging evidence suggests that certain classes of phytonutrients can help support the detoxification process by stimulating the liver to produce detoxification enzymes or acting as antioxidants that neutralize the harmful effects of free radicals. This study was designed to examine the effects of a guided 28-day metabolic detoxification program in healthy adults.

Alzheimer Disease and Related Cognitive Impairment in Older Adults: A Narrative Review of Screening, Prevention, and Management for Manual Therapy Providers.

Objective: The aim of this narrative review was to review literature relevant to manual therapists about cognitive impairment, together with screening, potential treatment, and prevention modalities.

Methods: A literature search of AMED (Allied and Complementary Medicine Database), CINAHL (Cumulative Index of Nursing and Allied Health Literature), PubMed, and MEDLINE was conducted with the search terms "cognitive decline," "cognitive impairment," "screening," and "prevention." We reviewed current screening practices, including functional exams, imaging, and laboratory testing.

Discrepant Perceptions of Biopsychosocial and Active Care Recommendations Between Doctors of Chiropractic and Midlife and Older Adult Patients: A Descriptive Survey.

Objective: The purpose of this study was to assess perceptions about the inclusion of biopsychosocial and active care recommendations during chiropractic clinical encounters between doctors of chiropractic (DCs) and their midlife and older adult patients and to identify whether there were any discrepancies between their recollections.

Methods: This descriptive cross-sectional survey was part of a mixed-methods research project designed to gather information about the role of electronic health interventions for midlife and older adults who use chiropractic care. For this study, a convenience sample of 29 DCs and 48 chiropractic patients aged 50 years and older from 2 metropolitan areas in the United States completed online surveys between December 2020 and May 2021.

Qualitative Analysis of Illness Representations and Coping Perceptions Among Older Adults With Chronic Spinal Disability: "A Thought in the Back of My Mind".

Objective: The purpose of this study was to explore older adults' illness representations, their beliefs about health, and their coping perceptions of chronic spinal disability.

Methods: This qualitative descriptive study used structured interviews that were completed during a randomized trial of non-pharmacological management of spine-related disability with chiropractic spinal manipulative therapy and exercise. Dual coders conducted a descriptive thematic analysis of 50 randomly selected transcripts supported by qualitative data management software.

Association Between Psychosocial Parameters and Response to Chiropractic Care Among Older Adults With Chronic Low Back Pain: Secondary Analysis of a Randomized Clinical Trial.

Objectives: The purpose of this study was to determine whether baseline self-efficacy, fear of pain with movement (kinesiophobia), or change in either were associated with clinically important improvement in disability among older adults with chronic low back pain after 12 weeks of chiropractic spinal manipulation (CSM) and exercise.

Methods: This secondary analysis used randomized trial data from community-dwelling adults aged 65 years or older with chronic spinal disability who received non-pharmacological treatment of CSM and exercise. Those with ≥30% reduction in the Oswestry Disability Index (ODI) after 12 weeks of treatment were considered responders to care.

Objectives: To highlight the detail obtained on a Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) scan of the craniocervical junction and its usefulness to Chiropractors who specialize in the upper cervical spine. A review of the dose considerations to patients vs radiography in a chiropractic clinical setting and to review the effective radiation dose to the patient.

Methods: A review of studies discussing cervical biomechanics, neurovascular structures, and abnormal radiographic findings, was discussed in relation to chiropractic clinical relevance.

Differential mortality with COVID-19 and invasive mechanical ventilation between high-income and low-and middle-income countries: a systematic review, meta-analysis, and meta-regression.

The COVID-19 pandemic has markedly affected the health care of patients in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), but no systematic study to corroborate this effect has been undertaken. In addition, the survival outcomes of patients with COVID-19 who received invasive mechanical ventilation (IMV) have not been well established. We pooled evidence from all available studies and did a systematic review and meta-analysis to assess and compare mortality outcomes between LMICs and high-income countries (HICs).

Multidisciplinary integrative care versus chiropractic care for low back pain: a randomized clinical trial.

Background: Low back pain (LBP) is influenced by interrelated biological, psychological, and social factors, however current back pain management is largely dominated by one-size fits all unimodal treatments. Team based models with multiple provider types from complementary professional disciplines is one way of integrating therapies to address patients' needs more comprehensively.

Methods: This parallel group randomized clinical trial conducted from May 2007 to August 2010 aimed to evaluate the relative clinical effectiveness of 12 weeks of monodisciplinary chiropractic care (CC), versus multidisciplinary integrative care (IC), for adults with sub-acute and chronic LBP.

Background: The purpose of this cross-sectional study was to compare the number of males and females in leadership positions, and whether there is a relationship between gender and degrees held in those positions, within chiropractic academic institutions, national regulatory bodies and the most widely representative national professional associations in the United States and Canada.

Objective: A mixed-methods, randomized controlled trial comparing short- and long-term chiropractic care and exercise therapy for spinal disability in older adults found no between-group differences in the primary outcome. However, those who received long-term management reported greater improvement in neck pain, self-efficacy, function, and balance. Methods: We conducted a secondary analysis of the 2012 National Health Interview Survey data. Adults age 65 or older who responded to the survey were included.

Effect of Kinesiology Taping on Upper Torso Mobility and Shoulder Pain and Disability in US Masters National Championship Swimmers: An Exploratory Study.

Objective: The purpose of this study was to observe changes in shoulder pain and upper-extremity functional movement after kinesiology taping (KT) in competitive swimmers.

Methods: Seventy-six healthy participants competing in the US Masters Swimming 2017 National Championship participated in the study. Participants performed functional movement of shoulder flexion along with Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder, and Hand index assessments for the shoulder before and 30 minutes after application of KT.

Hospital based massage therapy specific competencies.

As massage therapy experiences a resurgence of use for hospitalized patients, it is appropriate to consider the competencies needed by practitioners to practice safely and effectively in the inpatient setting. Hospitals differ vastly from other massage practice locations such as private offices, spas, and sports clubs. The variety of conditions encountered in an acute care setting require the knowledge and ability to adapt massage protocols appropriately.
