Does the STIC measurement and feedback system improve multisystemic outcomes in individual, couple and family therapy? A randomized clinical trial.

Objective: In a randomized clinical trial, we evaluated whether the STIC (Systemic Therapy Inventory of Change) measurement and feedback system (MFS), the first MFS to explicitly integrate the family systems perspective, improved outcomes in individual, couple and family therapy.

Method: Nine hundred and seventy clients seeking individual, couple or family therapy, entered therapy with 93 therapists at four sites in the Chicago metropolitan area. All therapists were trained with the STIC and participated in both Treatment as Usual (TAU) and TAU with the STIC (STIC).

Paradoxical effects of cigarette smoke and COPD on SARS-CoV-2 infection and disease.

Background: How cigarette smoke (CS) and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) affect severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV2) infection and severity is controversial. We investigated the effects of COPD and CS on the expression of SARS-CoV-2 entry receptor ACE2 in vivo in COPD patients and controls and in CS-exposed mice, and the effects of CS on SARS-CoV-2 infection in human bronchial epithelial cells in vitro.

Methods: We quantified: (1) pulmonary ACE2 protein levels by immunostaining and ELISA, and both ACE2 and/or TMPRSS2 mRNA levels by RT-qPCR in two independent human cohorts; and (2) pulmonary ACE2 protein levels by immunostaining and ELISA in C57BL/6 WT mice exposed to air or CS for up to 6 months.

Implementation of distress screening in an oncology setting.

The recommendations of numerous groups, such as the Institute of Medicine and the National Comprehensive Cancer Network, have resulted in the first regulatory standard on distress screening in oncology implemented in 2015 by the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer. This practice-changing standard promises to result in better quality cancer care, but presents unique challenges to many centers struggling to provide high-quality practical assessment and management of distress. The current paper reviews the history behind the CoC standard, identifies the most prevalent symptoms underlying distress, and discusses the importance of distress screening.

Template-directed assembly of metal-chalcogenide nanocrystals into ordered mesoporous networks.

Although great progress in the synthesis of porous networks of metal and metal oxide nanoparticles with highly accessible pore surface and ordered mesoscale pores has been achieved, synthesis of assembled 3D mesostructures of metal-chalcogenide nanocrystals is still challenging. In this work we demonstrate that ordered mesoporous networks, which comprise well-defined interconnected metal sulfide nanocrystals, can be prepared through a polymer-templated oxidative polymerization process. The resulting self-assembled mesostructures that were obtained after solvent extraction of the polymer template impart the unique combination of light-emitting metal chalcogenide nanocrystals, three-dimensional open-pore structure, high surface area, and uniform pores.

Pathophysiologic targets in the early phase of acute heart failure syndromes.

An episode of acute heart failure syndromes (AHFS) can be defined as a rapid or gradual onset of signs and symptoms of heart failure (HF) in hospital admission and can arise from a variety of pathophysiologic mechanisms. This article reviews our current understanding of the pathophysiology of AHFS in order to identify potential therapeutic targets. Most patients with AHFS present with either normal systolic blood pressure or elevated blood pressure.

Inflammatory pseudotumor of the testis: a novel presentation of acute retroviral syndrome.

Inflammatory pseudotumors are a rare entity, the etiology of which is not well understood. It has been postulated that these non-neoplastic lesions are the result of a reaction to trauma, surgery, infection or local irritation, though in many cases an underlying cause is never found. In this case, a 30-year-old man with previously undiagnosed human immunodeficiency virus presented with a 2-week history of painless right testicular mass measuring 1 x 1 cm.

Childhood overweight: management approaches in young children.

Management of overweight in young children may be our best opportunity for confronting the nationwide epidemic of childhood obesity. Doing so will require all health care providers to improve their identification, assessment, and guidance on this issue. As a group, we must make it a priority to obtain height and weight measurements on every child and to interpret them correctly.

Fluorescence quenching studies of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs): evidence for structural rearrangement of the proMMP-2/TIMP-2 complex upon mercurial activation.

Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) are zinc-dependent endopeptidases which are secreted from cells as zymogens and can be activated by treatment with organomercurial reagents or limited proteolysis. The proenzyme forms of MMP-2 (gelatinase A) and MMP-9 (gelatinase B) are found in complex with tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinases (designated proMMP-2/ TIMP-2 and proMMP-9/TIMP-1, respectively). The proposed mechanism of activation by mercurial compounds involves the induction of a conformational change in the zymogen which leads to propeptide autoprocessing.
