Background: Intussusception secondary to pathologic lead points (PLPs) is a potential surgical emergency and almost all cases need surgery. The aim of this study was to evaluate the clinical manifestations, physical examinations and surgical outcomes of secondary intussusception (SI) caused by PLPs, as well as to improve the diagnosis and treatment of PLPs in children and infants.

Materials And Methods: We retrospectively reviewed the records of 83 children and infants who were diagnosed with intussusception secondary to PLPs in our institution.

Background/aims: In heart failure patients with high prevalence of chronic renal disease (CKD), hospitalization and mortality, whether the lipid profile was associated with renal dysfunction remained unknown. The present study intended to clarify the association between the lipid profile and renal dysfunction in the heart failure patients.

Methods: 336 hospitalized heart failure patients with left ventricle ejection fraction (LVEF) ≤45% and New York Heart Association (NYHA) class II-IV were enrolled.

Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a hyper-inflammation-induced abrupt loss of kidney function and has become a major public health problem. The cecal ligation and puncture (CLP) model of peritonitis in rat pups mimics the development of sepsis-induced pediatric AKI is pre-renal without morphological changes of the kidneys and high lethality. Resveratrol, a natural polyphenolic compound with low toxicity, has obvious anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.

The functionally specialized melanosome is a membrane-enclosed lysosome-related organelle, which coexists with lysosomes in melanocytes. Pre-melanosomal protein (PMEL) initiates pre-melanosome morphogenesis and is the only cell-specific pigment protein required for the formation of fibrils on which melanin is deposited in melanosomes. But the effects of PMEL on melanin synthesis and lysosome activity remain unclear.

Interleukin-6 (IL-6) is a multifunctional cytokine that has been implicated in the etiology of cancer. Several case-control studies have been conducted to assess the association of -174G>C (rs1800795) polymorphism with the risk of cervical cancer, yet with conflicting conclusions. To derive a more precise estimation of the relationship, we performed this meta-analysis updated to June 2018.

High uric acid (UA) level and high salt intake are reportedly associated with cardiovascular disease. This study investigated the association between UA and urinary sodium excretion, as well as its interaction on the risk of prehypertension. A total of 1869 participants without hypertension were recruited from a previously established cohort in Shaanxi Province, China.

Objective: Chromosome aberrations are generally considered as one of the most substantial causative factors contributing to spontaneous miscarriages. Cytogenetic analyses like G-banded karyotype and chromosomal microarray analyses are often performed to further investigate the chromosome status of a miscarried fetus.

Study Design: Here, we describe a novel method, AnnoCNV, to detect DNA copy number variations (CNVs) using low coverage whole genome sequencing (WGS).

Background: Elective frozen-embryo transfer has been shown to result in a higher live-birth rate than fresh-embryo transfer among anovulatory women with the polycystic ovary syndrome. It is uncertain whether frozen-embryo transfer increases live-birth rates among ovulatory women with infertility.

Methods: In this multicenter, randomized trial, we randomly assigned 2157 women who were undergoing their first in vitro fertilization cycle to undergo either fresh-embryo transfer or embryo cryopreservation followed by frozen-embryo transfer.

The current study aimed to evaluate the cardioprotective effects of pterostilbene (PTB) on myocardial ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) injury in rats and identify its possible underlying mechanisms of action. A rat I/R model was established by ligating the left anterior descending coronary artery for 30 min and releasing the ligature to induce reperfusion for 120 min. Serum creatine kinase-MB (CK-MB) and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) levels were measured using CK-MB and LDH assay kits and myeloperoxidase (MPO) activity in the myocardium was evaluated using an MPO assay kit.

Article Synopsis
  • hWAPL is linked to cervical cancer and is evaluated in cervical cancer stem cells (CCSCs) using tumorspheres from cancer tissues.
  • The study showed hWAPL's expression is connected to CCSC pluripotency and decreases with cellular differentiation, while its knockdown led to reduced tumor invasion and growth.
  • This suggests hWAPL not only marks the proliferation of CCSCs but also presents a potential therapeutic target by affecting HPV E6 expression.

Orientin (luteolin-8-C-glucoside) is a phenolic compound found abundantly in millet, juice, and peel of passion fruit and has been shown to have antioxidant properties. In the present study, we explored the effects of orientin on oxygen-glucose deprivation/reperfusion (OGD/RP)-induced cell injury in primary culture of rat cortical neurons using an in vitro model of neonatal ischemic brain injury. The reduced cell viability and elevated lactate dehydrogenase leakage were observed after OGD/RP exposure, which were then reversed by orientin (10, 20, and 30 µM) pretreatment in a dose-dependent manner.
