Aim: The English Bowel Cancer Screening Programme detects colorectal cancers and premalignant polyps in a faecal occult blood test-positive population. The aim of this work is to describe the detection rates and characteristics of adenomas within the programme, identify predictive factors influencing the presence or absence of carcinoma within adenomas and identify the factors predicting the presence of advanced colonic neoplasia in different colon segments.

Method: The Bowel Cancer Screening System was retrospectively searched for polyps detected during colonoscopies between June 2006 and June 2012, at which time a guaiac test was being used.

Epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT) is known to be important in regulating the behaviour of cancer cells enabling them to acquire stem cell characteristics or by enhancing the stem cell characteristics of cancer stem cells, resulting in these cells becoming more migratory and invasive. EMT can be driven by a number of mechanisms, including the TGF-β1 signalling pathway and/or by hypoxia. However, these drivers of EMT differ in their actions in regulating side population (SP) cell behaviour, even within SPs isolated from the same tissue.

Sarcopenia in pediatric hemato-oncology patients is undesirable because of the consequences it may have for treatment continuation and outcome, physical abilities and participation in daily life. An easy-to-use screening tool for sarcopenia will facilitate the identification of children at risk who need interventions to prevent serious physical deterioration. In the elderly, the use of the SARC-F score as a case-finding tool for sarcopenia is recommended.

Some patients with therapy-related myeloid neoplasms (t-MN) may have unsuspected inherited cancer predisposition syndrome (CPS). We propose a set of clinical criteria to identify t-MN patients with high risk of CPS (HR-CPS). Among 225 t-MN patients with an antecedent non-myeloid malignancy, our clinical criteria identified 52 (23%) HR-CPS patients.
