COVID-19 was initially identified as a respiratory system disorder, but it has been reported to interact with and influence the cardiovascular system, in addition to many other body systems. Although COVID-19-associated cardiovascular (CV) complications are common, resulting in high acute phase mortality and a large number of morbidities in the chronic phase, thus severely impacting patients' quality of life and health outcomes, yet clinical, cellular, and molecular biological factors underlying the pathophysiology of cardiovascular complications associated with COVID-19 are poorly understood. This review investigates putative underlying clinical factors as well as cellular and molecular biological mechanisms by which COVID-19 leads to acute CV complications, including state-of-the-art genomic sequencing-based findings, and assessing the long-term CV consequences of COVID-19, aiming to shed light on developing strategies for differential diagnosis, risk prognostic stratification, prevention, and clinical management of CV sequels in COVID-19 patients.

In this study, the use of functionalized graphene quantum dots (GQDs) as a fluorescent probe has been investigated for the quantitative determination of galantamine, a choline esterase inhibitor used for the treatment of Alzheimer's disease. The GQDs exhibit a significant quenching in their fluorescence intensity upon interaction with galantamine allowing for sensitive and selective detection of the drug. This quenching process follows a dynamic pattern with a linear relationship between fluorescence intensity and the concentration of galantamine.

Double extreme-cum-median ranked set sampling.

PLoS One

December 2024

Department of Mathematics and Statistics, University of Lahore, Sargodha, Pakistan.

Extreme-cum-median ranked set sampling has been developed to address the problem of heterogeneity and outliers / extreme values. Double ranked set sampling has been suggested to obtain more reliable samples using the concept of degree of distinguishability. Dealing with heterogeneous and non-normal populations seems to be an area with a dearth of research.

Introduction: Recognizing human actions is crucial for allowing machines to understand and recognize human behavior, with applications spanning video based surveillance systems, human-robot collaboration, sports analysis systems, and entertainment. The immense diversity in human movement and appearance poses a significant challenge in this field, especially when dealing with drone-recorded (RGB) videos. Factors such as dynamic backgrounds, motion blur, occlusions, varying video capture angles, and exposure issues greatly complicate recognition tasks.

Coinfection of some respiratory viruses in cattle: An abattoir study.

Onderstepoort J Vet Res

December 2024

Department of Biology, College of Science and Arts, Northern Border University, Arar, Saudi Arabia; and, Virology Department, Central Veterinary Research Laboratory, Khartoum.

To investigate the existence of bovine viral diarrhoea virus (BVDV), parainfluenza virus 3 (PIV-3) and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) as well as its coinfections, a total of 420 pneumonic lung tissue samples were collected from slaughterhouses in three different areas. Samples were examined for the three viruses using antigen detection enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) test, and positive results were further confirmed using fluorescent antibody test and polymerase chain reaction. Prevalences detected were 10.

The solar sector is shifting towards lead-free, inorganic cubic halide perovskites due to their superior structural, electronic, and optoelectronic properties. This study uses density functional theory (DFT) to examine the structural, electronic, and optical properties of XSnBr (X = Cs, Rb, K, Na) and assesses their photovoltaic performance through the Solar Cell Capacitance Simulator - One Dimensional (SCAPS-1D). The results show each material has a direct band gap at the Γ-point, low optical losses, and high absorption, making them promising for solar and optoelectronic applications.

Objectives: Hepatotoxicity is a severe outcome of methotrexate (MTX) therapy, limiting its clinical use and contributing to its related morbidity and mortality. This study investigated the hepatoprotective effects of nitazoxanide (NTZ), an antiprotozoal drug, against MTX-induced hepatotoxicity and whether endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress-modulation underlies the expected beneficial effects of NTZ.

Methods: Thirty-six rats were allocated to six groups, one control group and five MTX groups, where induction of hepatotoxicity was achieved via injecting MTX (20 mg/kg).

This research paper investigates the application of Genetic Algorithms (GA) in optimizing Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) for phoneme recognition. The study examines the formalism of GA, their parameters, and operators, and describes the genetic strategy adopted for phoneme recognition using the TIMIT sound database. The paper presents the outcomes of experiments conducted on the phonemes of the test base and the DR1 dialect learning base of the TIMIT base, and compares the recognition rates obtained by learning and testing with those guided by Self-Organizing Map (SOM) experiments.

Investigating the impact of SOD1 mutations on amyotrophic lateral sclerosis progression and potential drug repurposing through analysis.

J Biomol Struct Dyn

December 2024

Department of Medical Laboratory Technology, Faculty of Medical Applied Science, Northern Border University, Arar, Saudi Arabia.

Superoxide dismutase 1 (SOD1) is a vital enzyme responsible for attenuating oxidative stress through its ability to facilitate the dismutation of the superoxide radical into oxygen and hydrogen peroxide. The progressive loss of motor neurons characterize amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a crippling neurodegenerative disease that is caused by mutations in the SOD1 gene. In this study, mutational analysis was performed to study the various mutations, the pathogenicity and stability ΔΔG (binding free energy) of the variant of SOD1.
