Introduction: Sucroferric oxyhydroxide (SO), a non-calcium, chewable, iron-based phosphate binder (PB), effectively lowers serum phosphorus (sP) concentrations while reducing pill burden relative to other PBs. To date, SO studies have largely examined treatment-experienced, prevalent hemodialysis populations. We aimed to explore the role of first-line SO initiated during the first year of dialysis.

Most patients receiving dialysis rely on dietary restriction and phosphate binders to minimize the risk of hyperphosphatemia, which is associated with increased mortality. However, dietary restriction is difficult because of hidden phosphate additives in processed foods and medications. Restriction of dietary phosphate sources such as protein may increase the risk of malnutrition.

Objective: Little is known about the effect of government-issued State of Emergency (SOE) and Reopening orders on health care behaviors. We aimed to determine the effect of SOE and Phase 1 of Reopening orders on hospitalizations for acute myocardial infarction (AMI) or acute decompensated heart failure (ADHF).
Methods: Hospitalizations for AMI and ADHF in the UNC Health system, which includes 10 hospitals in both urban and rural counties, were identified.
Rationale & Objective: High pill burden associates with reduced phosphate-binder adherence among dialysis patients, contributing to elevated serum phosphorus levels. We compared the real-world effectiveness of sucroferric oxyhydroxide (SO) versus other phosphate binders in hemodialysis patients over 2 years.

Aim: To investigate the efficacy and safety of initiating insulin degludec/liraglutide (IDegLira) in patients with type 2 diabetes (T2D) who had discontinued pretrial sulphonylureas (SUs) or dipeptidyl peptidase-4 inhibitors (DPP4is) versus patients not previously treated with these regimens.
Materials And Methods: In DUAL II, patients with T2D uncontrolled on basal insulin and metformin ± SU/glinides were randomized to insulin degludec or IDegLira (both capped at 50 U). In DUAL IX, patients were randomized to insulin glargine U100 (no maximum dose) or IDegLira, as add-on to sodium-glucose co-transporter-2 inhibitors ± oral antidiabetic drugs.

Objective: To describe the outcomes of a series of women diagnosed with a urethral diverticulum at an urban tertiary care center.
Methods: An Institutional Review Board-approved review of a series of 78 women with a diagnosis of urethral diverticulum from 2009 to 2015 was performed. Clinical, radiographic, and pathologic data was collected by retrospective review of patient medical records.

Intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) with or without intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH) is a highly morbid disease process due to the mass effect and secondary injury that occurs upon the surrounding brain. Historically, surgical evacuation has failed to demonstrate improved outcomes in comparison to standard medical therapy likely due to the significant brain trauma when accessing the clot. Recent minimally invasive techniques have proposed a way to improve outcomes by reducing this injury.

Background: Hyperphosphatemia necessitates the use of phosphate binders in most dialysis patients. Long-term efficacy and tolerability of the iron-based phosphate binder, sucroferric oxyhydroxide (previously known as PA21), was compared with that of sevelamer carbonate (sevelamer) in an open-label Phase III extension study.
Methods: In the initial Phase III study, hemo- or peritoneal dialysis patients with hyperphosphatemia were randomized 2:1 to receive sucroferric oxyhydroxide 1.
