Open surgical repair of abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) is often regarded as a near-permanent operation with little long-term complications. Reported herein is a case of delayed rupture of an enlarging AAA sac after open repair requiring re-exploration in a patient presenting with flank pain and ipsilateral hydronephrosis. The natural history of a large, excluded aneurysm sac after open AAA repair, hypothesized etiology for this rare occurrence, and proposed diagnostic and therapeutic algorithm are described.

Background: Most pregnancy-related deaths in Illinois are preventable. Many of those who died in recent years had at least one emergency department (ED) visit during pregnancy or the postpartum period. This suggests that with the proper training and education, EDs can play an important role in reducing maternal mortality.

Translating genetic findings for neurodevelopmental and psychiatric disorders (NPDs) into actionable disease biology would benefit from large-scale and unbiased functional studies of NPD genes. Leveraging the cytosine base editing (CBE) system, we developed a pipeline for clonal loss-of-function (LoF) allele mutagenesis in human induced pluripotent stem cells (hiPSCs) by introducing premature stop codons (iSTOP) that lead to mRNA nonsense-mediated decay (NMD) or protein truncation. We tested the pipeline for 23 NPD genes on 3 hiPSC lines and achieved highly reproducible, efficient iSTOP editing in 22 genes.

Objective: Attentional Control Theory (ACT) posits that anxiety impacts cognitive functioning through interference in working memory and processing efficiency, resulting in performance deficits in set-shifting and inhibition. Few studies have examined the effects of anxiety on set-shifting and inhibition in clinical samples or how these relationships might be affected by age. The current study tested whether increased age, elevated anxiety, and their interaction were associated with reduced performance on measures of set-shifting and inhibition.

Introduction: It is not uncommon for patients to experience postoperative neurologic deficit, thoracic radiculopathy, abdominal pain, or lower extremity paresthesia after the implantation of thoracic spinal cord stimulator (SCS) paddle leads. Smaller thoracic canal diameters have previously been associated with postoperative neurologic deficits.
Objective: This imaging study examined whether postoperative SCS neurologic complaints other than neurologic deficit may be correlated with thoracic spinal canal diameter.

Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) continues to be a daunting clinical challenge. In 2023, it is estimated that 64,000 people will be newly diagnosed with PDAC and 51,000 people will die from PDAC. By 2030, PDAC is predicted to be the second leading cause of cancer-related death, second only to lung cancer (Siegel et al in, CA Cancer J Clin 73(1):17-48, 2023).
