Article Synopsis
  • A study examined the link between myocardial fibrosis biomarkers and atrial fibrillation (AF) in heart failure patients, specifically their associations with left atrial volume (LAV) and patient prognosis.
  • The research involved 316 hospitalized heart failure patients, evaluating seven fibrosis-related proteins to find their connections to AF prevalence and risk of re-hospitalization or mortality.
  • Results showed that higher levels of certain proteins (TIMP-4, GDF-15, ST-2) were linked to the presence of AF and increased risk of all-cause mortality, but none were significantly associated with severely enlarged left atrial volume.

The Swedish response to the pandemic at the national level has attracted considerable international attention, but little focus has been placed on the way municipalities dealt with the crisis. Using Hay's dimensions of politicization, namely the capacity for human agency, deliberation in the public domain, and social context, we analyze the politicization of the municipal response to the pandemic in Sweden. We do this based on the analysis of the decision making process to activate (or not) an extraordinary crisis management committee.

The process of developing health workforce strategic plans in Africa: a document analysis.

BMJ Glob Health

May 2022

Health Workforce Unit, Universal Health Coverage - Life Course, World Health Organization Regional Office for Africa, Brazzaville, Brazzaville, Congo.

Background: Many countries are faced with a multitude of health workforce-related challenges partly attributed to defective health workforce planning. Earlier efforts to guide the process and harmonise approaches to national health workforce policies and planning in the Africa Region included, among others, the development of the WHO Africa Regional Office (WHO/AFRO) Policies and Plans for Human Resources for Health Guidelines for Countries in the WHO African Region in 2006. Although this guideline has led to uniformity and rigour in developing human resources for health (HRH) policies and strategies in Africa, it has become imperative to synthesise the emerging evidence and best practices in the development of health workforce strategies.

Cross-comparison of systemic and tissue-specific metabolomes in a mouse model of Leigh syndrome.

Metabolomics

November 2021

Human Metabolomics, Faculty of Natural and Agricultural Sciences, North-West University (Potchefstroom Campus), Private Bag X6001, Potchefstroom, South Africa.

Introduction: The value of metabolomics in multi-systemic mitochondrial disease research has been increasingly recognized, with the ability to investigate a variety of biofluids and tissues considered a particular advantage. Although minimally invasive biofluids are the generally favored sample type, it remains unknown whether systemic metabolomes provide a clear reflection of tissue-specific metabolic alterations.

Objectives: Here we cross-compare urine and tissue-specific metabolomes in the Ndufs4 knockout mouse model of Leigh syndrome-a complex neurometabolic MD defined by progressive focal lesions in specific brain regions-to identify and evaluate the extent of common and unique metabolic alterations on a systemic and brain regional level.

Host cell invasion by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is mediated by the interaction of the viral spike protein (S) with human angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) through the receptor-binding domain (RBD). In this work, computational and experimental techniques were combined to screen antimalarial compounds from different chemical classes, with the aim of identifying small molecules interfering with the RBD-ACE2 interaction and, consequently, with cell invasion. Docking studies showed that the compounds interfere with the same region of the RBD, but different interaction patterns were noted for ACE2.

The dysfunction of respiratory chain complex I (CI) is the most common form of mitochondrial disease that most often presents as Leigh syndrome (LS) in children - a severe neurometabolic disorder defined by progressive focal lesions in specific brain regions. The mechanisms underlying this region-specific vulnerability to CI deficiency, however, remain elusive. Here, we examined brain regional respiratory chain enzyme activities and metabolic profiles in a mouse model of LS with global CI deficiency to gain insight into regional vulnerability to neurodegeneration.

Objective: While existing evidence supports beneficial cardiovascular effects of glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1), emerging studies suggest that glucose-dependent insulinotropic peptide (GIP) and/or signaling via the GIP receptor may have untoward cardiovascular effects. Indeed, recent studies show that fasting physiological GIP levels are associated with total mortality and cardiovascular mortality, and it was suggested that GIP plays a role in pathogenesis of coronary artery disease. We investigated the associations between fasting and postchallenge GIP and GLP-1 concentrations and subclinical atherosclerosis as measured by mean intima-media thickness in the common carotid artery (IMTCCA) and maximal intima-media thickness in the carotid bifurcation (IMTBulb).
