Status of Sepsis Care in European Hospitals: Results from an International Cross-Sectional Survey.

Rationale: Early detection, standardized therapy, adequate infrastructure and strategies for quality improvement should constitute essential components of every hospital's sepsis plan.

Objectives: To investigate the extent to which recommendations from the sepsis guidelines are implemented and the availability of infrastructure for the care of patients with sepsis in acute hospitals.

Methods: A multidisciplinary cross-sectional questionnaire was used to investigate sepsis care in hospitals.

Background: Vitamin D plays a critical role in skeletal development and maintenance, thus sufficiency is an important goal for public health programs. Given the absence of foods fortified in vitamin D in Armenia, we hypothesized that vitamin D insufficiency would be widespread.

Methods: We conducted a random modified cluster model survey of vitamin D status of women in the country.

The aim of the study was to assess clinical efficacy and cost-effectiveness of standard metal crowns for primary molars restoration. The paper contains the results of 3-year study of 2 groups of children aged 3-9, whose molars were restored using different techniques after treatment of chronic fibrous pulpitis. In the first group (42 children) 128 temporary molars were restored using filling materials (glass ionomer cements, compomers), in the second group (35 children) 106 temporary molars were restored using standard metal crowns (3M ESPE USA).

[Age-related changes of otoacoustic emission].

The aim of the study was to assess age-related changes of the transient evoked otoacoustic emissions (TEOAE) and distortion product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAE) as well as to evaluate age-related changes of DPOAE suppression in adult subjects with normal hearing and presbycusis. Only women participated in the study: 26 young women with normal hearing (20-31 years old) were included into the first group; the second group consisted of 28 elderly (60-74 years old) with normal hearing; the third group included 28 elderly women with presbycusis (mild-to-moderate hearing loss). Age-related decrease of prevalence and amplitude of OAEs was proved to be significant; no significant differences of these data for left and right ears were revealed.

The use of single-photon emission computed tomography-computed tomography in detecting multiple metastatic lymph nodes in patients with breast cancer.

Aim: The aim of the present study was to determine the accuracy of single-photon emission computed tomography-computed tomography (SPECT-CT) with technetium-99m-sestamibi (Tc-MIBI) for detecting multiple (>2 nodes) axillary lymph node involvement in patients with breast cancer (BC).

Patients And Methods: A total of 184 women with BC were examined. Clinically, axillary lymph nodes were classified as N0 in all cases.

Epidemiology of hip fracture in Belarus: development of a country-specific FRAX model and its comparison to neighboring country models.

[Oral mucosa reaction in patients adapting to removable dentures].

Oral mucosa reaction of prosthetic bed to the removable acrylic dentures was evaluated in 43 patients (12 male and 31 female) aged 56-69 years with partial and full teeth loss in one or both jaws. Patients of the first (control) group (17 patients) were not using additional tools improving fixation of the removable dentures during adaptation period, while patients of the second (main) group (26 patients) used Corega cream for dentures fixation for 30 days follow-up. Oral mucosa assessment was carried out on 3-4 and 28-30 day of dentures use by 3 end points: pain syndrome, moisture level, inflammation of a prosthetic bed.

[Clinical peculiarities of atherosclerosis of peripheral arteries in patients with abdominal aortic calcification].

The authors analysed clinical peculiarities of atherosclerosis of peripheral arteries (hereinafter referred to as APA) in patients presenting with abdominal aortic calcification (AAC). In order to determine the incidence rate of AAC in the population of patients with APA we analysed medical records of a total of 1,800 patients. The study itself included a total of 193 patients with APA further subdivided into two groups: 108 patients with AAC (Study Group) and 85 patients without AAC.

Background: Smoking remains a leading health risk factor among Europeans. Tobacco, together with other factors, will lead to an expansive epidemic of chronic diseases, including COPD, among the working population in Russia. The general aim of the RESearch on the PrEvalence and the diagnosis of COPD and its Tobacco-related etiology (RESPECT) study is to gain a better understanding of the prevalence, pathogenesis and symptoms of COPD.
