With an objective to develop efficient photosensitizers to cancerous tissues, we synthesized two novel biocompatible sensitizers based on aza-BODIPYs incorporated with heavy atoms and biotin moieties. The bioconjugates and exhibited a favorable absorption range (600-750 nm) with excellent triplet-state quantum yields (up to 79%) and singlet oxygen generation yields (up to 75%). In vitro photobiological investigations employing MDA-MB-231 breast cancer cell lines exhibited rapid cellular uptake, negligible dark toxicity, and high photocytotoxicity.

Self-assembly of peptides demonstrates a great potential for designing highly ordered, finely tailored supramolecular arrangements enriched with high specificity, improved efficacy and biological activity. Along with natural peptides, hybrid peptide systems composed of natural and chemically diverse unnatural amino acids have been used in various fields, including drug delivery, wound healing, potent inhibition of diseases, and prevention of biomaterial related diseases to name a few. Role of growth arrest-specific 6 (Gas6), member of vitamin K (VK)-dependent protein family in hyperlipidemia-associated inflammation remains unresolved. To address this, blood samples were collected from hyperlipidemic subjects and age-matched healthy controls and observed that gamma-glutamyl carboxylated Gas6 (Gla-Gas6) but not total Gas6 were significantly lower while pro-inflammatory markers, MCP-1 and ICAM-1 were remarkably higher in hyperlipidemic subjects compared to control. Correlation analyses demonstrated that Gla-Gas6 levels were inversely correlated with MCP-1 and ICAM-1 but positively with plasma VK in hyperlipidemic subjects but not in control.
