Oxidative damage in three inflammatory neurological disorders; Guillain Barré syndrome (GBS), multiple sclerosis and aseptic meningitis, were assessed by measuring the peroxidation of lipids in body fluids. The results were compared to a control group consisting of patients with either migraine, chronic/tension headaches, benign intracranial hypertension or psychological disorders. Antioxidant status was assessed by the measurement of the extracellular proteins, haptoglobin, albumin, caeruloplasmin and transferrin.

Fluid-attenuated inversion recovery (FLAIR) imaging with prolonged inversion times allows generation of highly T2-weighted images of the brain with suppression of cerebrospinal fluid signal. Such sequences result in high lesion contrast and allow visualisation of abnormalities not seen with conventional T2-weighted spin-echo sequences. We used FLAIR sequences, proton density (PD) and standard T2-weighted images to examine lesion number and distribution in ten patients with clinically definite relapsing multiple sclerosis (MS).

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a common disorder characterized by chronic anovulation and infertility, hyperandrogenaemia, and frequently insulin resistance. This study investigated whether mutations in the insulin receptor gene could explain the insulin resistance in subjects with PCOS. From a total of 108 women with PCOS, a subgroup of 24 were selected on the criteria of being in the upper quartile for insulin resistance as assessed by fasting serum insulin, insulin area under the curve following 75 g oral glucose tolerance test, and endogenous glucose disposal as a measure of insulin sensitivity.

We report two cases of cerebral venous sinus thrombosis associated with an antibody to phospholipids, namely the lupus anticoagulant. Both patients later developed further immunologically mediated conditions. The importance of screening for the lupus anticoagulant in addition to anticardiolipin antibodies in this condition and the need for follow-up of such patients is discussed.

We have assessed in a placebo-controlled, double-blind trial, the efficacy and safety of an amethocaine gel preparation for alleviating the pain of venous cannulation. Forty-two unpremedicated adult patients were allocated randomly to receive either amethocaine gel 1 g (4% w/w) or placebo gel 1 g applied to the dorsum of the hand for 40 min before venous cannulation. After removal of the gel, a 20-gauge cannula was inserted and the pain of cannulation assessed by a three-point rank score and a 100-mm visual analogue scale: 90% of patients who received amethocaine reported clinically acceptable topical anaesthesia.

The effects of gonadectomy on the epidermal growth factor (EGF) concentrations in the gastrointestinal tract of CD-1 mice were studied. The EGF concentrations in the gastrointestinal tissues were always higher in males than in females. Gonadectomy led to a decrease in the EGF concentration in males, and an increase in females.

A case of congenital chylothorax treated by pleuroperitoneal drainage.

Multiple nocardial brain abscesses: report of two patients.

We describe the identification of the GSTM1 null, GSTM1 A, GSTM1 B and GSTM1 A,B polymorphisms at the glutathione S-transferase GSTM1 locus using a single-step PCR method. Target DNA was amplified using primers to intron 6 and exon 7 with site-directed mutagenesis being used to introduce a restriction site in DNA amplified from GSTM1 *A, thereby allowing differentiation of this allele and GSTM1 *B. The accuracy of this approach in identifying the GSTM1 A, GSTM1 B, GSTM1 A,B and GSTM1 null polymorphisms was confirmed by comparison with, firstly, an established PCR method that distinguishes GSTM1 *0 homozygotes from individuals with the other GSTM1 genotypes and, secondly, GSTM1 phenotypes determined using chromatofocusing.
