Patients' perceptions and satisfaction with treatment in a UK osteopathic training clinic.

This study was a descriptive and exploratory investigation of patient perceptions of treatment at an osteopathic training clinic. An open text questionnaire survey was administered by post in 2000 to all 292 patients attending the clinic in south-east England in 1998-2000. The response rate was 62%.

The place of research and development in nurse education.

The National Health Service (NHS) document Research for Health, a research and development strategy for the NHS, provides a starting point to explore the place of research and development in nurse education. The thesis focuses on whether research and development in nurse education is the concern of education or nursing. Some parallels are drawn between nursing and teaching.

Effect of host lineage on the virulence of Campylobacter jejuni/coli in the chick embryo model.

The chorioallantoic membrane (CAM) inoculated chick embryo model was used to study the effect of host lineage on the virulence of Campylobacter jejuni and Campylobacter coli. LD50 values were used to compare the susceptibilities of chick embryos from eight inbred chicken lines to infection by four strains of C. jejuni and one strain of C.

Social isolation does not alter brain regional benzodiazepine binding site numbers, affinity and coupling in the rat.

Male Sprague-Dawley rats were differentially housed for 21 days immediately after weaning. Isolated animals showed a selective suppression of exploration of the light side of a two compartment box; spending significantly less time in the light, and making fewer transitions between the light and dark compartments compared to socially reared controls. However, both basal and GABA-stimulated [3H] flunitrazepam binding was unaltered in the frontal cortex, hippocampus, amygdala and cerebellum following social isolation.

Genomic investigation of phenotypic variation in Campylobacter jejuni flagellin.

Western blots of whole-cell sonicates of 10 different clones of a faecal isolate of Campylobacter jejuni 533 detected the expression of flagella antigens of either 59 or 62 kDa. Other antigenic proteins appeared identical both in the parent and all the clones. The mechanism for this phenotypic variation was studied using Southern blotting with a flagellin-specific gene probe and products of a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) using flagellin-gene primers.

Predictors of nursing staff turnover.

Nursing turnover is of great concern to patients, management and the profession, and numerous studies have been conducted to increase understanding about this phenomenon. Most of these, however, have focused on staff nurses in the public sector; little is known about nurse manager turnover or the characteristics of nurses leaving the private hospital sector. The purpose of this study was to examine turnover of staff nurses and nurse managers in both the public and private hospital sectors.

Nursing turnover: literature review and methodological critique.

Turnover represents a major problem for nursing and health care in terms of cost, the ability to care for patients and the quality of care given. As a result, turnover has been the subject of a large number of investigations, both in nursing and non-nursing fields. However, many of the articles published report conflicting findings.

Measurement of class specific antibody against cryptosporidium in serum and faeces from experimentally infected calves.

Anti-cryptosporidium antibody levels were measured in serum and faeces of experimentally infected calves. In serum, IgG was detectable six days after infection and remained elevated throughout infection. IgA and IgM in serum showed little change.
