Post-anaesthesia shivering is a common complication and has multiple deleterious effects. Sometimes multiple non-pharmacological interventions applied together may not control post-anaesthesia shivering adequately, necessitating the use of drugs in some cases. Hand warming is commonly used to warm up the body since time immemorial but its role in preventing post-anaesthesia shivering has not been evaluated.

Introduction The left ventricle, the cardiac chamber responsible for blood supply to the whole of systemic vasculature, receives most of its blood supply from the left coronary arteries (LCAs). Atherosclerosis of these vessels leading to myocardial infarction is a leading cause of death. Several invasive diagnostic or therapeutic coronary interventions are available for such patients.

Diarrheal illness such as diarrheagenic (DEC), apart from rotavirus, is a common etiological agent known to cause moderate-to-severe diarrhea in low-income countries where unregulated use of antibiotics is rampant, giving rise to multidrug resistant (MDR) strains. This study is an earnest effort in reflecting the resistance pattern in such isolates.  It is a hospital-based cross-sectional study conducted over a period of 1 year (January to December, 2015).

Although inadequate vitamin D and altered parathyroid hormone (PTH) are implicated in deranged glucose metabolism and risk of future diabetes, their role in regulating glucose homeostasis in established cases of diabetes is unclear. We aimed to (i) evaluate vitamin D status, and (ii) determine if vitamin D and PTH were associated with parameters of glucose homeostasis in type 2 diabetes (T2D) patients from Meghalaya, India. We determined 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25-OH-D) and PTH concentrations in 251 T2D patients (not on insulin), and examined their associations with the following parameters of glucose homeostasis: fasting blood sugar (FBS), post-prandial blood sugar (PPBS), glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c), fasting insulin (FI), homeostasis model assessments of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) and β-cell function (HOMA-β).

Article Synopsis
  • - Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma (OSCC) is a common and aggressive type of cancer, and the study focuses on how DNA methylation, an epigenetic factor, is involved in its development, particularly in the ethnic population of Meghalaya, North East India.
  • - Researchers identified over 27,000 specific DNA sites that showed different methylation patterns in oral cancer tissues compared to normal tissues, with 45 genes in the promoter region being particularly noteworthy.
  • - Among these genes, 38 were hypermethylated (more methylation than normal), and 7 were hypomethylated (less methylation), with some genes overlapping with previous studies, suggesting potential new biomarkers for diagnosing OSCC.

Askin's tumor is a primitive neuroectodermal tumor (PNET) developing from the soft tissues of the chest wall and mainly occur in children and adolescents. The management approach is complex and requires a multidisciplinary team. We report a case of locally advanced Askin's tumour in a child because of its rarity and also to highlight the importance of keeping the possibility of PNET tumours in mind while dealing with cases of chest wall tumour in children.

Indian J Tuberc

July 2015

District Tuberculosis Officer, District TB Centre, East Khasi Hills District, Jhalupara, Shillong, 793002, India.

Drug-induced hypothyroidism is one of the well-documented adverse effects in treatment of MDR-TB, the data of which are unavailable in the population residing in this part of the Indian subcontinent.

Aim: This study was undertaken to assess the thyroid profile status of patients under DOTS Plus treatment and to evaluate the effects of anti-tubercular drugs on thyroid functions with respect to the pre-treatment thyroid status.
