The motility and invasion of cancer cells are basic requirements for the establishment of distant metastases. In this study, we examined the effect of invasion inhibiting factor 2 (IIF2), a motility/invasion regulatory agent, on the motility, invasion, growth and basement membrane attachment of human lung cancer cells. IIF2 significantly reduced cell dissociation, colony scattering and invasion induced by the motogenic factor, HGF/SF.

It has been demonstrated that neonatal administration of monosodium glutamate (MSG) results in a clearly defined lesion of the arcuate nucleus (AN) of the hypothalamus. The present study shows that fat was accumulated in the abdomen of male rats treated with MSG; weights of the body, pituitary and testis were lower; beta-EP content in hypothalamus decreased while L.EnK content increased; serum LH, FSH, TSH, GH and TS levels all decreased in varying degrees while serum PRL level significantly increased.

Wistar rats were fed with grain produced in the areas prevalent of Keshan Disease, and supplemented by selenium (Se) and vitamin E (VE) for ten weeks, and an acute myocardial ischaemia animal model was established by ligation of left anterior descending coronary arteries. Results indicated activities of phospholipase A2 (PLA2), creatine kinase (CK) and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), and levels of arachidonic acid (AA), thromboxane A2 (TXA2), leucotriene C4 (LTC4) and lipid peroxides (LPO) increased, but level of prostacyclin (PC) and activities of glutathione peroxidase (GSH-PO), copper-zinc superoxide dismutase (Cu-Zn-SOD) and catalase (CAT) decreased 48 hours after ligation of the coronary vessels in rats without supplement of Se and VE. Supplement of Se or VE in their feed could reverse the above effects and the best results could be got by supplement of both.

The postnatal development of Peyer's patches was investigated using routine histological and immunohistochemical techniques, focusing especially on the formation and increase in number of lymphoid follicles. In addition, we studied the influence on the development of lymphoid follicles in Peyer's patches of a sublethal dose of whole-body X-irradiation at an earlier postnatal age. At 1 day after birth, surface-IgM (sIgM)-bearing cells (B lymphocytes) were scattered throughout the Peyer's patch.

A consensus multiplex PCR (CM-PCR) technique was developed to detect high-risk (HPV 16/18), low-risk (HPV 6/11), and over 40 other types of human papillomavirus (HPV), separately but simultaneously, by mixing three pairs of consensus primers in the same PCR mixture, for gene amplification. Simultaneous detection of three groups of HPV DNA provides valuable information for clinical practice and this procedure is simple and convenient for routine laboratory examinations. We detected HPV DNA sequences in plasmid HPV DNA and DNA extracted from tissues of condyloma acuminata and cervical carcinoma and from exfoliated cells of the lower genital tract of healthy Chinese women living in the People's Republic of China.

Many low-level environmental agents are able to induce an increased resistance to subsequent mutagenic effects induced by ionizing radiation. In this paper, an induced cytogenetic adaptation to radiation in human lymphocytes was studied with mild hyperthermia as the adaptive treatment and compared with that induced by low-dose radiation. We found that this adaptation could be induced not only in PHA-stimulated human lymphocytes (at 14, 38 and 42 h after addition of PHA), but also in unstimulated G0-phase cells (before addition of PHA) by mild hyperthermia (41 degrees C for 1 h) as well as 50 mGy X rays.

Between 1982 and 1992, nine cases of oesophageal caustic stricture underwent oesophagogastric double anastomosis with success. There was no need to dissect and resect the strictured esophagus, and traumatizing organs adjacent to oesophgus was avoided. This method also eliminated the possibility of occurrence mediastinal abscess due to postoperative rebindling or infection by the esophageal segment.
