Although natural philosophers of Enlightenment Europe shared common ideals, like reliance on reason and natural philosophy, to promote what they deemed to be progress; there were national differences in attitude and disciplinary focus. This paper takes various eligibility criteria as a starting point from which to define a Nordic Enlightenment science; and situates endeavours in climate science within visions of useful science and international conventions for scientific practice. Two perspectives are explored: the make-up of the Nordic Enlightenment science; and the Nordic natural philosopher's various platforms for work and knowledge transfer.

Objective: Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and hypothyroidism are related conditions, and both are associated with adverse pregnancy outcomes. Knowledge is lacking about the complex interaction between thyroid status and PCOS during pregnancy. We investigated the thyroid status and its association with pregnancy complications in PCOS, and in relation to metformin treatment.

Background: The Editorial Board of EJNMMI Radiopharmacy and Chemistry releases a biyearly highlight commentary to describe trends in the field.
Results: This commentary of highlights has resulted in 19 different topics selected by each member of the Editorial Board addressing a variety of aspects ranging from novel radiochemistry to first in man application of novel radiopharmaceuticals.
Conclusion: Trends in radiochemistry and radiopharmacy are highlighted demonstrating the progress in the research field being the scope of EJNMMI Radiopharmacy and Chemistry.

Models can be simple for different reasons: because they yield a simple and computationally efficient interpretation of a generic dataset (e.g., in terms of pairwise dependencies)-as in statistical learning-or because they capture the laws of a specific phenomenon-as e.

Objective: Empathy and burnout are two related yet distinct constructs that are relevant to clinical healthcare staff. The nature of their relationship is uncertain and this review aimed to complete a rigorous, systematic exploration of the literature investigating the relationship between burnout and empathy in healthcare staff.
Design: A systematic review was conducted in accordance with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidance.

This article explores the possibility of testing hypotheses about art production in the past by collecting data in the present. We call this enterprise "experimental art history". Why did medieval artists prefer to paint Christ with his face directed towards the beholder, while profane faces were noticeably more often painted in different degrees of profile? Is a preference for frontal faces motivated by deeper evolutionary and biological considerations? Head and gaze direction is a significant factor for detecting the intentions of others, and accurate detection of gaze direction depends on strong contrast between a dark iris and a bright sclera, a combination that is only found in humans among the primates.

Accretion of matter onto black holes is universally associated with strong radiative feedback and powerful outflows. In particular, black-hole transients have outflows whose properties are strongly coupled to those of the accretion flow. This includes X-ray winds of ionized material, expelled from the accretion disk encircling the black hole, and collimated radio jets.

Various forms of uncertainty are important for decision making. How aware are we of the precision of knowledge, and how accessible it is? In three experiments, an assessment of the precision of spatial memory was needed to make optimal decisions. First, we examined search strategies in a search task in which the most efficient strategy was to head to one side of the target by a margin depending on the precision of spatial information, the "where to start" task.

A hallmark of higher cognition is the flexible use of information. This requires an abstract representation of the information. In sequence learning, ordinal position knowledge is seen as a more versatile representation when compared to chaining.

Background: Blood pressure monitoring is one of the most common procedures in clinical medicine. Evaluation and treatment of hypertension are costly and have considerable implications for the individuals involved. Mercury manometers have been dominant for a century, but are currently being replaced by other types of equipment.

Thermodynamic consistency of the mean spherical approximation as well as the self-consistent Ornstein-Zernike approximation (SCOZA) with the virial route to thermodynamics is analyzed in terms of renormalized gamma-ordering. For continuum fluids, this suggests the addition of a short-ranged contribution to the usual SCOZA direct correlation function, and the shift of the adjustable parameter from the potential term to this new term. The range of this contribution is fixed by imposing consistency with the virial route at the critical point.

The self-consistent Ornstein-Zernike approximation (SCOZA) is an accurate liquid state theory. So far it has been tied to interactions composed of hard core repulsion and long-range attraction, whereas real molecules have soft core repulsion at short distances. In the present work, this is taken into account through the introduction of an effective hard core with a diameter that depends upon temperature only.

A comparative study has been made of the intensity profiles from three-beam experiments to estimate triplet phases using radiation from a conventional sealed-tube X-ray source and two different synchrotron sources. Synchrotron radiation, with its much smaller angular divergence, narrower spectral bandwidth and higher flux, distinctly improves the experimental conditions for physical phase estimation. Pure psi scans about the primary diffraction vector, such as can be made with a six-circle diffractometer, further improve the conditions compared with combined omega/psi scans with a four-circle instrument, where the rotation in psi is accomplished by combining rotations about the three axes omega, chi and varphi.

Synthetic carotenoid analogs, with increased utility for biological applications, are sparingly reported in the literature. Synthetic modification, which may increase the water solubility and/or water dispersibility of lipophilic carotenoids, allows their use in aqueous environments as potent antioxidants against potentially deleterious reactive oxygen species (ROS) that can be generated in vivo. Superoxide anion, produced by activated human neutrophils, can be a source of additional harmful ROS and nonradical species such as singlet oxygen in vivo.
