Metronidazole is a broad-spectrum antimicrobial that is associated with 0.16% 100-day incidence rates for peripheral neuropathy. In this report, we present an interesting and rare presentation of peripheral neuropathy secondary to metronidazole use for bacteremia and sepsis in a patient with end-stage renal failure.

Remplissage is a procedure that decreases the rate of recurrent instability after arthroscopic stabilization in patients with an engaging Hill-Sachs lesion. This technique involves capsulotenodesis of the infraspinatus tendon and posterior capsule into the Hill-Sachs lesion using 2 knotless anchors with suture passage through the infraspinatus tendon guided by a percutaneous needle. Previously described techniques use knots or anchor placement through the infraspinatus, which can be challenging to control and irreversible if tendon penetration occurs in an undesirable location.

This needs-assessment study evaluated the physical activity levels, needs, preferences, and requirements for exercise among individuals with visual impairments, aiming to establish evidence for the codesign of a subsequent home-based exercise program. The questionnaire, comprising 35 questions, was developed by a research team of disability and adapted physical activity experts. It was implemented for the online survey, collecting data from 145 adults with severe low vision and blindness between January 15 and January 29, 2024.

Purpose: To describe a technique involving combined endothelialectomy and trypan blue staining to allow for improved visualization and Descemet membrane (DM) removal during endothelial keratoplasty.

Methods: Endothelialectomy with 2 disposable endothelial irrigating cannulas (Vortex and Sterimedix) and an irrigation-aspiration handpiece are described. Several passes over the desired area are made to ensure adequate endothelialectomy treatment.

Niche Partitioning and Intraspecific Variation of Thaumarchaeota in Deep Ocean Sediments.

Environ Microbiol

January 2025

Frontiers Science Center for Deep Ocean Multispheres and Earth System, and College of Marine Life Sciences, Ocean University of China, Qingdao, China.

Deep-sea sediments contain a large number of Thaumarchaeota that are phylogenetically distinct from their pelagic counterparts. However, their ecology and evolutionary adaptations are not well understood. Metagenomic analyses were conducted on samples from various depths of a 750-cm sediment core collected from the Mariana Trench Challenger Deep.

Vitiligo is a chronic autoimmune skin condition characterized by depigmentation due to the destruction of melanocytes. Recent research has identified potential links between vitiligo and alterations in both the gut and skin microbiomes. This systematic review aims to explore these microbiome changes and their potential role in the onset and progression of vitiligo.

Background: Mitral regurgitation (MR) is a prevalent valvular abnormality categorized as primary or secondary based on aetiology. Surgical intervention, particularly mitral valve repair, is often preferred over replacement due to its association with better outcomes. However, the benefits of repair versus replacement, especially in secondary MR, remain debated.

Objectives: While the target of growth of very preterm infants (VPIs) during Neonatal Intensive care unit (NICU) admission is still controversial, the most accepted objective is that they should follow their intrauterine trajectory in terms of growth and body composition (BC). BC is difficult to measure in clinical daily routine but proxies like body ratios and skinfolds have been used. Prenatal and postnatal factors can influence the growth and BC of VPIs in the NICU.

Nuclear factor (erythroid-derived 2)-like 2 (Nrf2) is a key regulator of cell detoxification, which maintains homoeostasis in healthy cells and promotes chemoresistance in cancer cells. Controlling the expression of this transcription factor is therefore of great interest. There are many compounds that have been shown to induce Nrf2 expression, but ligands that can inhibit Nrf2 are scant.

FAecal micRobiota transplantation in primary sclerosinG chOlangitis (FARGO): study protocol for a randomised, multicentre, phase IIa, placebo-controlled trial.

BMJ Open

January 2025

National Institute of Health and Care Research (NIHR) Birmingham Biomedical Research Centre (BRC) Center for Liver and Gastrointestinal Research, University of Birmingham, Birmingham, England, UK

Introduction: Primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC) is the classical hepatobiliary manifestation of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). The strong association between gut and liver inflammation has driven several pathogenic hypotheses to which the intestinal microbiome is proposed to contribute. Pilot studies of faecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) in PSC and IBD are demonstrated to be safe and associated with increased gut bacterial diversity.

Purpose: Interprofessional practice requires regular communication between professionals from different disciplines using shared terminology. Within schools, many professionals are tasked with supporting children with language disorders, namely, developmental language disorder (DLD) and/or dyslexia. Limited information exists as to (a) how school-based professionals' definitions of DLD and dyslexia align with research definitions, (b) how different school-based professionals define language disorders, (c) how school-based professionals' definitions of DLD and dyslexia align across professional groups, and (d) how one's definition of a language disorder correlates with other measures of knowledge.

Article Synopsis
  • PFAS are man-made chemicals found in many industries that pose environmental and public health risks, but monitoring them in Africa is hindered by a lack of mass spectrometry (MS) instruments.
  • The review highlights that few African countries have adequate access to MS, leading to significant underreporting of PFAS data and related health issues.
  • To improve monitoring efforts, the study calls for financial support for MS instruments, the establishment of regional centers of excellence, and investment in training programs for effective PFAS management.

Educational and psychological research often involves comparing motivation across groups. It is critical to ensure that observed differences in motivation are true variations by group, not due to measurement biases. With a diverse sample of undergraduate students (N = 2200), this study measured internal consistency and gathered validity evidence based on the internal structure of five motivation scales.

Introduction: Mental health problems are the most significant cause of disability and have high annual economic costs; hence, they are a priority for the government, service providers and policymakers. Consisting of largely coastal and rural communities, the populations of Norfolk and Suffolk, UK, have elevated burdens of mental health problems, areas with high levels of deprivation and an increasing migrant population. However, these communities are underserved by research and areas with the greatest mental health needs are not represented or engaged in research.

High-energy nuclear collisions create a quark-gluon plasma, whose initial condition and subsequent expansion vary from event to event, impacting the distribution of the eventwise average transverse momentum [P([p_{T}])]. Disentangling the contributions from fluctuations in the nuclear overlap size (geometrical component) and other sources at a fixed size (intrinsic component) remains a challenge. This problem is addressed by measuring the mean, variance, and skewness of P([p_{T}]) in ^{208}Pb+^{208}Pb and ^{129}Xe+^{129}Xe collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=5.

State Physical Education and Physical Activity Laws and Regulations in the United States: Estimating Mandated Time in Public Schools.

Am J Health Promot

January 2025

Department of Human Movement Studies and Special Education, Darden College of Education & Professional Studies, Old Dominion University, Norfolk, VA, USA.

Article Synopsis
  • This study examined mandated physical education (PE) and physical activity (PA) times in public schools across all 50 states and D.C.
  • It found that only 25.5% of states require specific PA/recess time, while about 51% mandate PE, with an average of 76.54 minutes for PE and 131.41 minutes for PA in states with mandates.
  • The results indicate that most state regulations fall short of the recommended 60 minutes of daily physical activity for children, suggesting a need for legislative reassessment.
