Background: Ischaemic intestines could be a driver of critical illness through an inflammatory response. We have previously published reports on a biomarker for intestinal injury, plasma Intestinal Fatty Acid Binding Protein (IFABP), and inflammatory biomarkers after out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA). In this post-hoc study we explored the potential indirect effects of intestinal injury mediated through the inflammatory response on organ dysfunction and mortality.

Background: ICU nurses are most frequently at the patient's bedside, providing care for both patients and family members. They perform an essential role and are involved in decision-making. Despite this, research suggests that nurses have a limited role in the end-of-life decision-making process and are occasionally not involved.

Despite advances in the treatment and care of severe physical injuries, trauma remains one of the main reasons for disability-adjusted life years worldwide. Trauma patients often suffer from disturbances in energy utilization and metabolic dysfunction, including hyperglycemia and increased insulin resistance. White adipose tissue plays an essential role in the regulation of energy homeostasis and is frequently implicated in traumatic injury due to its ubiquitous body distribution but remains poorly studied.

Background: Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are commonly recommended for perioperative opioid-sparing multimodal analgesic treatments. Concerns regarding the potential for serious adverse events (SAEs) associated with perioperative NSAID treatment are especially relevant following gastrointestinal surgery. We assessed the risks of SAEs with perioperative NSAID treatment in patients undergoing gastrointestinal surgery.

Objective: Many psychiatric disorders are linked to low grade systemic inflammation as measured by systemic cytokine levels. Exploration of cytokines and immune activity and their role in psychiatric symptoms may inform pathobiology and treatment opportunities. The aim of this study is to explore if there are associations between cytokines and psychiatric symptom clusters.

No previous studies have investigated the systemic absorption of bupivacaine when used topically for posttonsillectomy pain. The present study was undertaken to investigate the pharmacokinetics of bupivacaine after administration by a swab in the tonsillar fossae over 4 min after tonsillectomy. Eleven adult patients undergoing elective tonsillectomy were recruited.

Background: Medication-related problems are an important cause of emergency department (ED) visits, and medication errors are reported in up to 60% of ED patients. Procedures such as medication reconciliation and medication review can identify and prevent medication-related problems and medication errors. However, this work is often time-consuming.

Genetic repeat expansions cause neuronal degeneration in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis as well as other neurodegenerative disorders such as spinocerebellar ataxia, Huntington's disease and Kennedy's disease. Repeat expansions in the same gene can cause multiple clinical phenotypes. We aimed to characterize repeat expansions in a Norwegian amyotrophic lateral sclerosis cohort.

Background: Klebsiella pneumoniae species complex (KpSC) bloodstream infections (BSIs) are associated with considerable morbidity and mortality, particularly in elderly and multimorbid patients. Multidrug-resistant (MDR) strains have been associated with poorer outcome. However, the clinical impact of KpSC phylogenetic lineages on BSI outcome is unclear.

Background And Purpose: Physical activity (PA) is often reduced in people with MS (pwMS), even when disability is low. Understanding the perspectives of pwMS on interventions aiming to improve PA is important to inform the development of such services. The aim of this study was to explore the experiences of pwMS participating in an outdoor, high-intensity and balance exercise group intervention.

Background: The complement system, an upstream recognition system of innate immunity, is activated upon SARS-CoV-2 infection. To gain a deeper understanding of the extent and duration of this activation, we investigated complement activation profiles during the acute phase of COVID-19, its persistence post-recovery and dynamic changes in relation to disease severity.
Methods: Serial blood samples were obtained from two cohorts of hospitalized COVID-19 patients (n = 457).

Background: Multimodal breast cancer treatment may cause side effects reflected in patient-reported outcomes and/or symptom scores at the time of treatment planning for adjuvant radiotherapy. In our department, all patients have been assessed with the Edmonton Symptom Assessment System (ESAS; a questionnaire addressing 11 major symptoms and wellbeing on a numeric scale of 0-10) at the time of treatment planning since 2016. In this study, we analyzed ESAS symptom severity before locoregional radiotherapy.

Background: Shaft fractures of the femur are commonly treated with intramedullary nailing, which can release bone marrow emboli into the bloodstream. Emboli can travel to the lungs, impairing gas exchange and causing inflammation. Occasionally, emboli traverse from the pulmonary to the systemic circulation, hindering perfusion and resulting in injuries such as heart and brain infarctions, known as .

Aim: Current guidelines for cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) recommend a one-size-fits-all approach in relation to the positioning of chest compressions. We recently developed RescueDoppler, a hands-free Doppler ultrasound device for continuous monitoring of carotid blood flow velocity during CPR. The aim of the present study is to investigate whether RescueDoppler via real-time hemodynamic feedback, could identify both optimal and suboptimal compression positions.

Background: General practitioners (GPs) have an important gatekeeping role in the Norwegian sickness insurance system. This role includes limiting access to paid sick leave when this is not justified according to sick leave criteria. 85% of GPs in Norway operate within a fee-for-service system that incentivises short consultations and high service provision.

Background: Surgical site infections are a major health problem that deteriorates the patients' health and increases health care costs. A reliable method to identify patients with modifiable risk of surgical site infection is necessary to reduce the incidence of them but data are limited. Hence the objective is to assess the predictive validity of a logistic regression model compared to risk indexes to identify patients at risk of surgical site infections.

Acute intermittent porphyria (AIP) is an inherited metabolic disorder associated with complications including kidney failure and hepatocellular carcinoma, probably caused by elevations in the porphyrin precursors porphobilinogen (PBG) and delta-aminolevulinic acid (ALA). This study explored differences in modern biomarkers for renal and hepatic damage between AIP patients and controls. Urine PBG testing, kidney injury panels, and liver injury panels, including both routine and modern biomarkers, were performed on plasma and urine samples from AIP cases and matched controls (50 and 48 matched pairs, respectively).

Background And Purpose: Impaired sensorimotor function, reduced physical activity and unemployment are common challenges in persons with multiple sclerosis (pwMS), even when disability is low. CoreDISTparticipation is a new, multidisciplinary intervention delivered across healthcare levels systematically addressing these elements. This study primarily aimed to evaluate the feasibility of CoreDISTparticipation in terms of process, resources, management, and scientific outcomes.
