A systematic review of diagnostic techniques to determine tissue perfusion in patients with peripheral arterial disease.

Expert Rev Med Devices

August 2019

a Department of Surgery, Division of Vascular Surgery, University Medical Center Groningen, University of Groningen, Groningen , The Netherlands.

: Peripheral arterial disease (PAD) may cause symptoms due to impaired tissue perfusion of the lower extremity. So far, assessment of PAD is mainly performed by determination of stenosis or occlusion in the large arteries and does not focus on microcirculation. Several diagnostic techniques have been recently introduced that may enable tissue perfusion measurements in the lower limb; however, most have not yet been implemented in clinical daily practice.

Testing Episodic Memory in Elderly Subjects: Not as Simple as It Looks.

Dement Geriatr Cogn Dis Extra

June 2019

Department of Geriatric Medicine, NoordWest Hospital, Alkmaar, The Netherlands.

Background/aims: The available episodic memory tests are not specifically constructed to examine older subjects. Their use in outpatient memory clinics may result in aborted test administration. We used a strict adherence to the test protocol in cognitively healthy, amnestic mild cognitive impairment (aMCI), and Alzheimer's disease dementia subjects to assess the possibility of preventing this.

Background: In this study, we systematically reviewed late open conversions after failed endovascular aneurysm repair (EVAR), assessed the methodologic quality of the included studies, and performed a meta-analysis on the 30-day mortality rates for urgent and elective late conversions.

Methods: Electronic databases were systematically searched for studies published up to June 2018 that focused on late open conversion of failed EVAR (ie, >30 days after the initial EVAR), reported the primary outcome of 30-day mortality rate, and distinguished the 30-day mortality rate between urgent and elective late conversions. Two independent reviewers assessed the methodologic quality of the included studies with the Methodological Index for Non-Randomized Studies.

Case series of recurrent inguinal hernia after primary TREPP repair: re-TREPP seems feasible and safe.

Int J Surg Case Rep

September 2018

Dept of Surgery, Noordwest Hospital Group, Wilhelminalaan 12, 1815 JD Alkmaar, the Netherlands. Electronic address:

Introduction: The Trans REctussheath PrePeritoneal (TREPP) mesh repair was introduced in 2006 to decrease the risk of postoperative inguinal pain in hernia surgery. For the repair of a recurrent inguinal hernia after a primary TREPP an alternative open anterior route (Lichtenstein) may seem the most logical option, but coincides with an increased risk of chronic postoperative inguinal pain. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the feasibility of a second TREPP procedure to repair a recurrent inguinal hernia after an initial TREPP repair.

Defining and Measuring a Standard Set of Patient-Relevant Outcomes in Coronary Artery Disease.

Am J Cardiol

June 2018

Meetbaar Beter Foundation, Eindhoven, The Netherlands; Value-Based Healthcare Department, St. Antonius Hospital, Nieuwegein, The Netherlands.

Systematic outcome measurement enables to continuously improve treatment results and stimulates dissemination of best practices. For patients with coronary artery disease, no examples yet exist of standard sets of patient-relevant outcome measures that have already been fully implemented at a large scale in clinical care. The aim of this paper is twofold: (1) to share the standard set of outcome measures as developed by Meetbaar Beter, and (2) to show how the standard set is presented and published to support improvement of cardiac care.

Objectives: The aim of this study was to determine predictors of very late stent thrombosis (VLST; >1 year after stenting), and to evaluate whether addition of these predictors to the dual antiplatelet therapy (DAPT) score would improve the ability to identify patients at high risk of VLST who might benefit from DAPT.

Background: VLST is a severe complication of percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). Extended knowledge about the predictors of VLST is needed to prevent this life-threatening complication.

Patients with critical limb ischemia have a poor life expectancy, and aggressive revascularization is accepted to maintain their independence in the end stage of life. Bypass surgery and, more recently, endovascular interventions with angioplasty and stenting have become the treatment of choice to prevent amputation and resolve rest pain. Up to 20% of patients with critical limb ischemia are not suitable candidates for a vascular intervention because of extensive occlusions of the outflow in the crural and pedal vessels.
