Background The selection of an appropriate imaging technique for assessment before cochlear implantation is critical for precise diagnosis and management. While magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is used for the diagnosis of several conditions, such as labyrinthitis ossificans, cochlear nerve deficiency, and neoplasms, high-resolution computed tomography (HRCT) provides excellent details of the temporal bone. However, it remains unclear whether routine MRI provides any additional benefits over HRCT.

Article Synopsis
  • Fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) is a chronic disorder affecting 3-6% of the general population, primarily women, causing severe pain and evaluated for the relationship between vitamin D, serotonin, and FMS severity.
  • A study with 40 participants assessed medical history and used the Fibromyalgia Impact Questionnaire (FIQR) to determine severity, revealing that 42.5% had mild/moderate FMS while the rest were severe/extreme, with lower serotonin levels linked to higher severity.
  • The study found a significant negative relationship between serotonin levels and FMS severity, but no significant link between vitamin D levels and severity scores.

This article reports the case of a single coronary artery with origin from a single ostium in the right sinus of Valsalva (RSOV) with an anomalous course of the left coronary artery anterior to the pulmonary trunk. We present the case of an anomalous single coronary artery detected incidentally during routine coronary computed tomography (CT) angiography performed by a multislice CT method, using a 64-detector-row scanner. The CT examination revealed that the patient had a single large right coronary artery arising from the right sinus of Valsalva, dividing into the right coronary artery, left main coronary artery (LMCA), and left circumflex artery (LCX).

Diabetes management and treatment approaches outside of North America and West Europe in 2006 and 2015.

Acta Diabetol

August 2019

Baker Heart and Diabetes Institute, Level 4, Alfred Centre, 99 Commercial Road, Melbourne, VIC, 3004, Australia.

Aims: The impact of introducing new classes of glucose-lowering medication (GLM) on diabetes management remains unclear, especially outside North America and Western Europe. Therefore, we aimed to analyse trends in glycaemic control and the usage of new and old GLMs in people with type 2 diabetes from 2006 to 2015.

Methods: Summary data from clinical services from nine countries outside North America and Western Europe were collected and pooled for statistical analysis.

Noninvasive ventilation in critically ill patients with the Middle East respiratory syndrome.

Influenza Other Respir Viruses

July 2019

Intensive Care Department, King Abdullah International Medical Research Center, College of Medicine, King Abdulaziz Medical City, King Saud bin Abdulaziz University for Health Sciences, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

Background: Noninvasive ventilation (NIV) has been used in patients with the Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS) with acute hypoxemic respiratory failure, but the effectiveness of this approach has not been studied.

Methods: Patients with MERS from 14 Saudi Arabian centers were included in this analysis. Patients who were initially managed with NIV were compared to patients who were managed only with invasive mechanical ventilation (invasive MV).

Macrolides in critically ill patients with Middle East Respiratory Syndrome.

Int J Infect Dis

April 2019

International Severe Acute Respiratory and Emerging Infection Consortium (ISARIC), Division of Infectious Diseases and International Health, Department of Medicine, University of Virginia School of Medicine, Charlottesville, VA, United States. Electronic address:

Objectives: Macrolides have been reported to be associated with improved outcomes in patients with viral pneumonia related to influenza and other viruses, possibly because of their immune-modulatory effects. Macrolides have frequently been used in patients with Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS). This study investigated the association of macrolides with 90-day mortality and MERS coronavirus (CoV) RNA clearance in critically ill patients with MERS.

Critically ill healthcare workers with the middle east respiratory syndrome (MERS): A multicenter study.

PLoS One

April 2019

Department of intensive care, King Saud bin Abdulaziz University for Health Sciences, King Abdullah International Medical Research Center, King Abdulaziz Medical City, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

Article Synopsis
  • The study focused on critically ill healthcare workers (HCWs) affected by Middle East Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus (MERS-CoV) to understand their clinical outcomes.
  • Among 32 HCWs analyzed, there was a high death rate (25%), particularly among those with chronic renal issues, and survivors exhibited lower oxygen levels and required more advanced treatments like ECMO.
  • Long-term effects on survivor's functionality were assessed, revealing that while a small number reported limitations, the overall impact and recovery outcomes need further research in larger studies.
