Sensitivity analysis of key factors influencing compression-induced deformation of waste rocks for backfilling to reduce environmental pollution.

Environ Sci Pollut Res Int

May 2020

State Key Laboratory of Coal Resources and Safe Mining, School of Mines, Nanhu Campus, China University of Mining & Technology, No. 1 University Road, Xuzhou, 221116, Jiangsu, China.

As solid wastes are generated during coal mining, waste rocks can be backfilled into goaf so as to reduce geological hazards and environmental damage caused by coal mining; however, under different stress regimes, the sensitivities of factors influencing compression-induced deformation (CID) of waste rocks for backfilling (WRBs) are different. In order to control the compression-induced deformation of waste rocks for backfilling more efficiently, compression characteristics of waste rocks for backfilling under four different stress levels were tested by using a homemade loading test system for granular materials based on an orthogonal experiment. The influences of lithology, particle size distribution (PSD), lateral stress, and number of lateral loading cycles on compression-induced deformation of waste rocks for backfilling and sensitivities ranks of the four factors were analysed.

X-linked inhibitor of apoptosis protein (XIAP), survivin, and BRUCE are members of the inhibitor-of-apoptosis protein (IAP) family known for their inhibitory effects on caspase activity and dysregulation of these molecules has widely been shown to cause embryonic defects and to promote tumorigenesis in human. Besides the anti-apoptotic functions, recent discoveries have revealed that XIAP, survivin, and BRUCE also exhibit regulatory functions for autophagy in cells. As the role of autophagy in human diseases has already been discussed extensively in different reviews; in this review, we will discuss the emerging autophagic role of XIAP, survivin, and BRUCE in cancer cells.

Langmuir

February 2020

State Key Laboratory of Tribology , Tsinghua University, No. 30 Shuangqing Road, Haidian District , Beijing 100084 , China.

Aqueous lubrication in nature is attracting increasing attention in the tribological fields for reducing friction energy consumption and improving anti-wear durability. Generally, adding nanolubricant additives is one of the most important strategies to effectively enhance the interface performance under boundary lubrication via the formation of a protective tribofilm on rubbing surfaces. However, the adsorbed tribofilms are unstable and are prone to failure during friction, and the interaction mechanism between the tribofilms and frictional interfaces is partly disclosed.

The present study showed that low level of miR-107 in femoral head tissues from rats suffering steroid-induced osteonecrosis of the femoral head (SANFH) was associated with high degree of osteonecrosis and apoptosis. In vitro assay, pretreatment with an Agrimonia pilos polysaccharide (APP-AW) and its sulphated derivatives (S2) at 50 μg/ml for 48 h or overexpressing miR-107 were able to prevent cytotoxicity induced by 1 μM dexamethasone (DEX) in MC3T3-E1 cells via inhibition of apoptosis. Meanwhile, the decreased ALP activity, collagen content, BMP2, Runx2, OSX and OCN protein expression in DEX-treated MC3T3-E1 cells were rescued by the addition of APP-AW and S2, or miR-107 transfection.

Polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) play important roles in organisms, including the structure and liquidity of cell membranes, anti-oxidation and anti-inflammation. Very little has been done in terms of the effect of PUFAs on cell death, especially on DNA virus. In this study, we demonstrated that the infectious spleen and kidney necrosis virus (ISKNV) can induce host cell death via the apoptotic cell death pathway, which correlated to modulation by PUFAs in grouper fin cell line (GF-1) cells.

Herein, the universal luminescence characteristics of porous Si nanowire arrays were exploited using a wide range of doping types and concentrations; we found that the dual-band photoluminescence intensities were correlated with the formation rates of Si nanowires with porous features; however, these intensities exhibited no evident dependence on the doping conditions. Furthermore, we demonstrated a facile and reliable transfer method implementing the freestanding Si nanowire arrays while maintaining the robust photoluminescence behaviors under bending conditions. The fabrication protocol, involving lateral etching locally at the nanowire ends, enabled the controlled formation of uniform and large-area transferred nanowires with vertical regularity.

Cardiovasc Eng Technol

September 2018

Department of Mechanical Engineering, National Cheng Kung University, No. 1 University Road, Tainan, 701, Taiwan.

In the current scenario of endovascular intervention, surgeons have to manually navigate the catheter within the complex vasculature of the human body under the guidance of X-ray. This manual intervention upsurges the possibilities of vessel damage due to frequent contact between the catheter and vasculature wall. In this context, a shape memory alloy-based miniaturized actuator was proposed in this study with a specific aim to reduce vessel wall related damage by improving the bending motions of the guidewire tip in a semi-automatic fashion.

Development of an efficient viral aerosol collector for higher sampling flow rate.

Environ Sci Pollut Res Int

February 2018

Department of Environmental and Occupational Health, College of Medicine, National Cheng Kung University, No. 1 University Road, Tainan, Taiwan.

Viral aerosol infection through cough generates large amounts of viral aerosol and can result in many adverse health effects such as influenza flu and severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS). To characterize the coughed viral aerosol, the sampler needs to sample at higher flow rate and possess high physical collection efficiency as well as high viral preservation. However, most current inertia-based high flow bioaerosol samplers are not suited for viral aerosol sampling since the viability will be lost doing the sampling process.
