Metabolic reprogramming is a hallmark of neutrophil activation in sepsis. LncRNAs play important roles in manipulating cell metabolism; however, their specific involvement in neutrophil activation in sepsis remains unclear. Here we found that 11 lncRNAs and 105 mRNAs were differentially expressed in three transcriptome datasets (GSE13904, GSE28750, and GSE64457) of gene expression in blood leukocytes and neutrophils of septic patients and healthy volunteers.

Peguero-Lo Presti criteria for the diagnosis of left ventricular hypertrophy: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Background: The Peguero-Lo Presti criteria are novel electrocardiographic (ECG) diagnostic criteria for the detection of left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) and represent the sum of the amplitude of the deepest S wave in any lead with the S wave in lead V4 (SD+SV4). The diagnostic efficacy of the Peguero-Lo Presti criteria in LVH is still debatable. We aimed to test the sensitivity and specificity of the Peguero-Lo Presti criteria and compared them with those of the Cornell voltage index to assess their overall performance in LVH diagnosis.

Ghrelin protects small intestinal epithelium against sepsis-induced injury by enhancing the autophagy of intestinal epithelial cells.

Background: Ghrelin is a hormone that protects against hypoxic injury of cardiac cells by inducing autophagy, but the role of autophagy in sepsis remains unclear. This study aimed to evaluate whether ghrelin could enhance autophagy in rats with intestinal sepsis.

Methods: The cecal ligation and perforation (CLP) method was used to induce sepsis in Sprague-Dawley rats.

Clinical features of patients with dysthymia in a large cohort of Han Chinese women with recurrent major depression.

Background: Dysthymia is a form of chronic mild depression that has a complex relationship with major depressive disorder (MDD). Here we investigate the role of environmental risk factors, including stressful life events and parenting style, in patients with both MDD and dysthymia. We ask whether these risk factors act in the same way in MDD with and without dysthymia.

Childhood sexual abuse and the risk for recurrent major depression in Chinese women.

Background: Studies in Western countries have repeatedly shown that women with a history of childhood sexual abuse (CSA) are at increased risk for developing major depression (MD). Would this relationship be found in China?

Method: Three levels of CSA (non-genital, genital, and intercourse) were assessed by self-report in two groups of Han Chinese women: 1970 clinically ascertained with recurrent MD and 2597 matched controls. Diagnostic and other risk factor information was assessed at personal interview.
