Validation of the existing modified screening criteria for detection of all cases of Retinopathy of Prematurity in preterm babies - 11 year study from a governorate referral hospital in Oman.

Purpose: To study appropriateness of our modified screening criteria for detection of all cases of Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP) among preterm babies.

Method: Retrospective observational cohort study among preterm neonates who underwent ROP screening as per set protocol for 11 years at Nizwa Hospital, Al Dhakilya Governorate, Oman. We screened all babies with gestational age ⩽32 weeks or BW ⩽ 1500 g.

Fatal Varicella Myocarditis in a Child with Down Syndrome-A Case Report.

A 12-year-old male child with Down syndrome, who had recovered from congenital heart disease, succumbed to severe varicella myocarditis. His clinical presentation at admission mimicked acute coronary syndrome. Analysis of this case throws insight into several aspects of varicella myocarditis.

Pregnancy with sigmoid volvulus: A case report with literature review.

Sigmoid volvulus refers to torsion of a segment of the alimentary tract, which often leads to bowel obstruction and ischemic changes. Sigmoid volvulus is an acute surgical emergency because delay in diagnosis and management can cause adverse maternal and fetal complications. Sigmoid volvulus typically presents with acute-on-chronic abdominal distension that may develop slowly over 3-4 days.

Colloid cyst of the third ventricle presenting with features of Terson's syndrome.

This report describes a middle-aged man presenting to the ophthalmologist with history of seeing floaters before both eyes since 2-weeks duration. A history of intermittent headache and dizziness of recent onset was elicited on questioning. Ocular examination showed bilateral early papilloedema and mild vitreous hemorrhage.

Statin associated hepatic adverse effects: a retrospective review from a regional hospital in sultanate of oman.

Objective: This study aimed at evaluating the prevalence, pattern and predisposing factors for hepatic adverse effects with statins in a regional hospital in Sultanate of Oman.

Methods: A retrospective review of the patient files in Department of Medicine during the year 2011 was done to evaluate any hepatic dysfunction possibly related to statins among the patients. For each case of suspected statin induced hepatic effect, additional details on temporal relationship, pattern of presentation, management, final outcome and any contributing factors were obtained.

A study of post-caesarean section wound infections in a regional referral hospital, oman.

Objectives: The aim of this study was to determine the incidence of surgical site infections (SSI) in patients undergoing a Caesarean section (CS) and to identify risk factors, common bacterial pathogens and antibiotic sensitivity. SSI significantly affect the patient's quality of life by increasing morbidity and extending hospital stays.

Methods: A retrospective cross-sectional study was conducted in Nizwa Hospital, Oman, to determine the incidence of post-Caesarean (PCS) SSI from 2001 to 2012.

Gastrointestinal stromal tumors: a case report.

Advances in the identification of gastrointestinal stromal tumors, its molecular and immunohiostochemical basis, and its management have been a watershed in the treatment of gastrointestinal tumors. This paradigm shift occurred over the last two decades and gastrointestinal stromal tumors have now come to be understood as rare gastrointestinal tract tumors with predictable behavior and outcome, replacing the older terminologies like leiomyoma, schwannoma or leiomyosarcoma. This report presents a case of gastric gastrointestinal stromal tumor operated recently in a 47-year-old female patient and the outcome, as well as literature review of the pathological identification, sites of origin, and factors predicting its behavior, prognosis and treatment.

Blurred vision as the sole initial presentation of disseminated lung malignancy.

Symptomatic choroidal metastasis (CM) is a rare presenting feature of disseminated lung malignancy. Detection of the primary malignancy usually precedes ocular findings. We report a rare case of blurred vision secondary to bilateral CM as the sole initial manifestation of disseminated lung malignancy in a female patient.

Perinatal mortality rate as a quality indicator of healthcare in Al-dakhiliyah region, oman.

Objectives: This study aimed to provide insight into the causes of stillbirths and early neonatal deaths and identify better intervention strategies.

Methods: This was a retrospective study during a 7-year period (January 2003 to December 2009) of all stillbirths and early neonatal deaths at the Nizwa regional referral hospital in Al-Dakhiliyah region, Oman.

Results: Of a total 27,668 births, there were 244 stillbirths and 157 early neonatal deaths.

Polyhydramnios as a predictor of adverse pregnancy outcomes.

Objectives: This study aimed to ascertain the frequency of polyhydramnios in singleton pregnancies, to determine the associated risk factors, and assess the adverse maternal and perinatal outcomes.

Methods: A retrospective cohort study of all singleton pregnancies complicated with polyhydramnios after 28 weeks of gestation was carried out in Nizwa Hospital's Obstetrics & Gynecology Department, Oman, from January 2002 to December 2007. Of 25,979 pregnant women reviewed, 477 were found to have polyhydramnios.

Ruptured rudimentary horn at 22 weeks.

Rudimentary horn is a developmental anomaly of the uterus. Pregnancy in a non-communicating rudimentary horn is very difficult to diagnose before it ruptures. A case of undiagnosed rudimentary horn pregnancy at 22 weeks presented to Nizwa regional referral hospital in shock with features of acute abdomen.

A rabbit eye model for in vivo transformation of progenetic metacercariae of Clinostomum complanatum into ovigerous adult worms.

Clinostomum complanatum is a digenetic trematode that causes yellow grub disease in some fish species and also shows zoonotic potential by sporadically infecting humans. In this study, progenetic metacercariae of C. complanatum were obtained from the fish Trichogaster fasciatus, and were aseptically placed in conjunctival incisions made in the superior and inferior fornices of the eye of rabbits, which served as the experimental hosts.

Informed consent in clinical practice and literature overview.

Informed consent is a legal requirement to be fulfilled before any procedure is carried out in clinical practice. It has wide ramification and different interpretations in the present healthcare system. Free and informed consent is required for medical treatments and procedures, except in an emergency situation when informed consent cannot be obtained and there is no indication that a reasonable patient would refuse consent to treatment.

Methotrexate treatment of ectopic pregnancy: experience at nizwa hospital with literature review.

Objectives: Ectopic pregnancy occurs when the embryo fails to implant within the uterine cavity. Methotrexate, a folic acid antagonist has been widely used to treat ectopic pregnancy. The aim of this study is to determine the efficacy of methotrexate treatment for ectopic pregnancies in our settings which will in-turn help us reduce maternal mortality and morbidity.

Extradural Hemorrhage: A rare Complication and Manifestation of Stroke in Sickle Cell Disease.

We present a case of extradural hemorrhage, a rare and unusual complication associated with Sickle Cell Disease, from Nizwa, Oman. A 12-year old male child with Sickle cell disease (SD) was admitted to hospital with backache and pain in both lower Limbs. Clinical examination revealed an average built child with mild pallor, mild tenderness in the lower back and both legs.

The spectrum of rheumatoid arthritis in patients attending rheumatology clinic in nizwa hospital-oman.

Objectives: To determine the spectrum and expression of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) in patients attending the rheumatology clinic in Nizwa hospital, Oman.

Subjects And Methods: 66 patients fulfilling the American College of Rheumatology (ACR) criteria for the diagnosis of RA were included in the study. The patients were either attending for the first time or were already diagnosed and attending for follow up.

Effect of macular photocoagulation on visual acuity of Omani patients with clinically significant macular edema.

Background: The aim of this study was to determine the effect of macular laser treatment on the visual acuity (VA) of Omani diabetic patients with clinically significant macular edema (CSME). Visual outcome was also correlated with duration and control of diabetes and presence or absence of hypertension and hyperlipidemia.

Materials And Methods: This is a retrospective noncomparative cohort study involving 101 eyes of 72 Omani diabetic patients.

Occlusion of upper genital tract following lower segment caesarean section for placenta praevia.

Uterine cavity occlusion following caesarean section for central placenta praevia culminating in haematometra and thereby amenorrhoea is one of the rarest long term complications of lower segment caesarean section. We report a case of 28 year old primigravida with Grade 4 placenta praevia who underwent elective caesarean section at 35 weeks gestation. She presented at Nizwa Hospital, Sultanate of Oman, after 7 months with cyclical lower abdominal pain and amenorrhoea.

Use of ventilator bundle to prevent ventilator associated pneumonia.

Objectives: To determine if the knowledge and awareness of "ventilator bundle" helped in the prevention of ventilator associated pneumonia and other outcome variables in the patients admitted to our AICU.

Design: A retrospective obsevational study from a pospectively collected data.

Participants: All the adult medical and surgical patients who were intubated and ventilated in our AICU from January to September in the year 2005 and 2006 were included in the study.
