Division of Respiratory Medicine, Juntendo University Faculty of Medicine and Graduate School of Medicine, 3-1-3 Hongo, Bunkyo-ku, Tokyo, 113-8431, Japan; The Study Group for Pneumothorax and Cystic Lung Diseases, 4-8-1 Seta, Setagaya-ku, Tokyo, 158-0095, Japan.

The characteristics of the pulmonary cysts on the high-resolution computed tomography (HRCT) chest images are an important diagnostic clue to distinguish among cystic lung diseases. The diagnostic accuracy of HRCT was reported to be as high as 90% by experienced pulmonologists and radiologists. Herein, we report the case of an elderly woman with Birt-Hogg-Dubé syndrome (BHDS) whose HRCT images displayed lymphangioleiomyomatosis-like features of the pulmonary cysts, rendering it difficult for us to diagnose BHDS.

June 2023

The Committee of the Evaluation and Dissemination for Certified Kidney Disease Educator, Japan Kidney Association, Tokyo, Japan.

Article Synopsis
  • This study investigates the effectiveness of multidisciplinary care in preventing the progression of chronic kidney disease (CKD) in 3015 Japanese patients with CKD stages 3-5.
  • Results showed that patients receiving this type of care experienced a significantly slower decline in kidney function (eGFR) and reduced urinary protein levels over 24 months compared to before starting the intervention.
  • The findings suggest that multidisciplinary care is beneficial for CKD patients, regardless of the underlying cause or stage of the disease, and is recommended for managing CKD stages 3-5.

Diabetic Polyneuropathy: New Strategies to Target Sensory Neurons in Dorsal Root Ganglia.

Int J Mol Sci

March 2023

Division of Neurology and Department of Medicine, Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry, The Neuroscience and Mental Health Institute and The Alberta Diabetes Institute, University of Alberta, Edmonton, AB T6G 2G3, Canada.

Diabetic polyneuropathy (DPN) is the most common type of diabetic neuropathy, rendering a slowly progressive, symmetrical, and length-dependent dying-back axonopathy with preferential sensory involvement. Although the pathogenesis of DPN is complex, this review emphasizes the concept that hyperglycemia and metabolic stressors directly target sensory neurons in the dorsal root ganglia (DRG), leading to distal axonal degeneration. In this context, we discuss the role for DRG-targeting gene delivery, specifically oligonucleotide therapeutics for DPN.

Currently, there is no surgical assistance system that can perform a three-dimensional (3D) planned total hip arthroplasty (THA) by methods other than surgical assistance navigation or robots. However, they are expensive, cumbersome, and subject to additional invasiveness, so there is a need for a simpler and less expensive 3D surgical support system. In this study, THA was performed using the anterolateral approach (Watson-Jones) in the supine position in 23 subjects to examine the efficacy and safety of a patient-specific femoral guide linked to 3D surgery support software.

Article Synopsis
  • Management of tumor lysis syndrome (TLS) is crucial during cancer chemotherapy due to its serious potential outcomes, and rasburicase is a key treatment option.
  • A study in Japan found that only 4.8% of 373 patients with hematopoietic malignancies were re-administered rasburicase, indicating low re-administration rates.
  • Importantly, none of the patients experienced anaphylaxis during these re-administrations, suggesting that rasburicase is being used safely in this population.
