Purpose: Outcome prediction is a crucial component of rehabilitation in post-stroke patients. However, only a few studies have focused on the influence of stroke recurrence on outcomes in these patients. This study aimed to determine the impact of stroke recurrence on functional independence using data from a convalescent rehabilitation hospital.

[Purpose] To assess the neural fiber damage causing balance deficits in post-stroke patients. [Participants and Methods] Diffusion tensor imaging was conducted during the second week after stroke onset, and the Berg Balance Scale scores were recorded at discharge from our affiliated rehabilitation facility. The total score of the motor component of the Stroke Impairment Assessment Set and the Functional Independence Measure motor score were also documented.

Background & Aims: The diagnostic criteria for cachexia, as proposed by the Asian Working Group for Cachexia (AWGC), include weight loss, a low body mass index, and additional factors such as a low handgrip strength (HGS), anorexia, or elevated CRP levels. This study aimed to evaluate the significance of low HGS as a diagnostic criterion in patients with advanced cancer.
Methods: This single-centre, retrospective cohort study was conducted between April 2019 and March 2023.

Introduction: Acute stroke rehabilitation is crucial for achieving good functional recovery, even during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. This study aimed to clarify the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on acute stroke rehabilitation and identify which components in the acute stroke rehabilitation provision system were susceptible to the pandemic.
Methods: A web-based questionnaire survey was conducted in all primary stroke centers (PSCs) in Japan between February 7 and April 21, 2022.

Cases: Two competitive athletes with isolated comminuted trapezium fractures, sustained during American football and rugby, presented with pain and swelling of the first metacarpal base. Computed tomography confirmed isolated comminuted trapezium fractures. Arthroscopic reduction of displacement with screw fixation below the articular surface was performed through a small incision.

[Purpose] To expand the applicability of diffusion-tensor tractography fractional anisotropy for stroke rehabilitation, this study aimed to provide references for representative neural tracts from non-lesioned hemispheres. Therefore, we applied the assessment of neural integrity to representative stroke patients using Z-score conversion. [Participants and Methods] Fractional anisotropy values were assessed in neural tracts, including the corticospinal tract, inferior fronto-occipital fasciculus, uncinate fasciculus, and anterior thalamic radiation, of stroke patients receiving acute care.

Objectives: In Japan, acute stroke rehabilitation has been expanding more steadily than previously with the nationwide establishment of primary stroke centers. However, Japan previously had no established guidelines for the rehabilitation. Consequently, rehabilitation programs and the provision systems for acute stroke varied among the facilities.

Objectives: In this study, we aimed to investigate the prevalence of oral frailty and explore its relationship with oral function and sarcopenia among older outpatients.
Materials And Methods: In this cross-sectional study, we retrospectively included older patients who visited a frailty outpatient clinic. We assessed total oral frailty employing, among other measures, oral diadochokinesis (/ta/ sound) for tongue-lip movement and tongue pressure.

Background: The association of the combination of body mass index (BMI) and weight change at admission with prognoses in patients with heart failure (HF) is unclear. Therefore, we investigated whether BMI and weight changes at admission affect mortality in patients with HF.
Methods: This retrospective cohort study lasted 99 months, starting in April 2014, and included 4,862 patients with HF from a Japanese real-world database.

Objectives: The objective of this study was to evaluate the predictive precision of combining the corticospinal tract lesion load (CST-LL) with the diffusion-tensor fractional anisotropy of the corticospinal tract (CST-FA) in the lesioned hemispheres regarding motor outcomes.
Methods: Patients with putaminal and/or thalamic hemorrhage who had undergone computed tomography (CT) soon after onset in our hospital were retrospectively enrolled. The CST-LL was calculated after registration of the CT images to a standard brain.

This study aimed to clarify the factors influencing the discharge destination of stroke patients in a super-aged rural community in Japan, focusing on functional independence and sociodemographic factors. We enrolled patients recovering from stroke with supratentorial lesions who were admitted to our convalescent rehabilitation hospital. The motor components of the Functional Independence Measure (FIM-motor) were assessed for each patient at admission and discharge as explanatory variables.

Objectives: Oropharyngeal dysphagia is one of the most prevalent health complications in older adults. The prevalence of postoperative dysphagia is expected to rise with the increasing number of older patients undergoing orthopedic surgery; however, the specific prevalence and contributing factors remain unclear. This scoping review aimed to identify the prevalence and factors related to postoperative dysphagia in older orthopedic patients.

[Purpose] Diffusion-tensor fractional anisotropy has been used for outcome prediction in stroke patients. We assessed the clinical applicability of the two major fractional anisotropy methodologies-fractional anisotropy derived from segmentation maps in the standard brain (region of interest) and fractional anisotropy derived from standardized automated tractography-in relation to outcomes. [Participants and Methods] The study design was a retrospective survey of medical records collected from October 2021 to September 2022.

Background: Aphasia is a common disorder among stroke patients. Assessment of aphasia is essential for scheduling appropriate rehabilitative treatment. Although this is conventionally accomplished using neuropsychological test batteries, these tests are not always accessible because of attention and/or consciousness disturbances during acute care.

Background & Aims: Data regarding the delivery of nutrition and nutritional infusions to patients with terminal cancer remain limited; therefore, this real-world analysis investigated differences in nutrition delivery and infusion statuses for patients with terminal-stage cancers.
Methods: Patients who had died following hospitalization for more than seven days due to neoplasms between April 2014 and December 2018 were identified using the medical claims database of Japan. Data regarding oral diets, enteral feeding, infusion volumes, and infusion energies were extracted.

Dysphagia is a syndrome of abnormal eating function resulting from a variety of causative diseases, and is associated with malnutrition. To date, the swallowing function has been difficult to examine without the use of invasive and expensive methods, such as the videofluorographic swallowing study or fiberoptic endoscopic evaluation of swallowing. In recent years, progress has been made in the clinical application of ultrasound equipment for the evaluation of body compositions near the body surface, including the assessment of nutritional status.

Background: Predictive factors associated with independent ambulation post-stroke are less commonly reported for patients during the acute phase of stroke. This study aimed to identify the clinical variables predicting ambulation independence in the acute phase of stroke and test the superiority of their prediction accuracy.
Methods: Sixty-nine patients, hospitalized in the acute phase for an initial unilateral, supratentorial stroke lesion, were divided into independent ( = 24) and dependent ambulation ( = 45) groups, with functional ambulation category scores of 4-5 and ≤ 3, respectively.
