The activities of the enzymes involved in the malate-aspartate shuttle and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) and the pattern of the isoenzymes of LDH were determined in plasma and peripheral leukocytes of lactating Holstein cows and thoroughbred riding horses as representative herbivorous animals. In the horse plasma, LDH activities were significantly lower and AST activities were significantly higher than those in the cow plasma. The specific activities of cytosolic malate dehydrogenase (MDH), LDH and AST in the horse leukocytes were higher than those in the cows.

A mongrel dog, aged 2 years, was found to have only a small number of sperm, immobilization of all sperm, and many sperm agglutinations in its ejaculates, and scrotal palpation revealed a small nodule in the left cauda epididymis. Addition of the dog's seminal plasma or serum to the semen of 2 normal dogs caused immobilization and agglutination of their sperm. Histological examination showed that the nodule was a sperm granuloma.

Fluoroscopy (FS)- or transesophageal echocardiography (TEE)-guided heartworm removal was carried out using flexible alligator forceps to compare the rate of worm removal. As a result, the worm removal rates were similar between the two procedures. However, the TEE-guided procedure does not involve radiation exposure, and facilitates observation of worms in the cardiac chamber and pulmonary artery.

Changes of heart rate during sexual behavior in the female rat.

Exp Anim

January 2003

Behavioral Neuroscience Laboratory, Nippon Veterinary and Animal Science University, Musashino, Tokyo 180-8602, Japan.

The authors studied the physiological and behavioral responses during sexual behavior in female rats. For this purpose, electrocardiographs were recoded from conscious and unrestrained females using a radiotelemetry system. Heart rate during sexual behavior rose sharply following the introduction of a sexually active male, displayed a peak level of 425 bpm during male ejaculation, and then rapidly decreased.

The activities of the enzymes involved in the malate-aspartate shuttle were measured in peripheral leucocytes of dogs with type 1 diabetes mellitus. In the diabetic dogs, fasting plasma glucose concentrations were twofold greater than control levels despite insulin injections and the activities of malate dehydrogenase (MDH), which plays a crucial role in the malate-aspartate shuttle, were decreased remarkably. The cytosolic ratio of MDH/lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) activity (M/L ratio) in leucocytes of the diabetic dogs was significantly lower than that of normal control dogs.

The prophylactic efficacy of desmopressin acetate (DDAVP) on diabetes insipidus (DI) after hypophysectomy was investigated in the dog. In the control group, hypernatremia with a plasma level of 155 mEq/l or higher persisted for 12 hr from the 4th to the 16th hour after hypophysectomy, and symptoms of DI developed within five days after surgery. In the DDAVP treatment group, these changes were not observed, showing that administration of DDAVP (4 microg, installation, twice daily) effectively prevented hypernatremia that develops immediately after surgery and DI-like symptoms that persists for about one week after surgery.

Dogs, cats, and pigs have a bicornuate uterus, and transuterine migration of embryos occurs in 40% or more of pregnant animals. However, the mechanism of the transuterine migration has not been elucidated in dogs. Thus, we investigated the occurrence of transuterine migration of embryos when embryos were retained in an unilateral uterine tube with more ovulated ova (Experiment 1), when one ovary was excised (Experiment 2), and when ova ovulated from the right and left ovaries were fertilized with sperm from male dogs with different blood types (Experiment 3).
