Femoral component placement changes soft tissue balance in posterior-stabilized total knee arthroplasty.

Background: We developed a new tensor for total knee arthroplasty enabling the soft tissue balance measurement after femoral trial placement with the patello-femoral joint reduced. The purpose of the present study is to compare the measurements of joint gap and ligament balance between osteotomized femoral and tibial surfaces in posterior-stabilized total knee arthroplasty with that between surfaces of femoral trial component and tibial osteotomy.

Methods: Using this tensor, the effect of femoral trial placement on the soft tissue balance was analyzed in 80 posterior-stabilized total knee arthroplasties for varus osteoarthritic knees.

A malignant mesothelioma (MM) is an aggressive neoplasm, although some patients have shown long-term survival, and factors related to survival remain uncertain. We present three cases of MM of the peritoneum including autopsy results, in which factors related to long-term survival were investigated. Purpose: To evaluate the long-term effects of photodynamic therapy (PDT) on different phenotypes of age-related macular degeneration (AMD): typical AMD (tAMD) and polypoidal choroidal vasculopathy (PCV).

Methods: A multicenter prospective study of 207 eyes of 201 patients (tAMD, 123 eyes; PCV, 84 eyes) treated with PDT. Sex, age, best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA), greatest linear dimension, and lesion type were evaluated for pretreatment factors.
