Background: Despite the positive impact of implantable cardioverter defibrillators (ICDs) and wearable cardioverter defibrillators (WCDs) on prognosis, their implantation is often withheld especially in Japanese heart failure patients with reduced left ventricular ejection fraction (HFrEF) who have not experienced ventricular tachycardia (VT) or ventricular fibrillation (VF) for uncertain reasons. Recent advancements in heart failure (HF) medications have significantly improved the prognosis for HFrEF. Given this context, a critical reassessment of the treatment and prognosis of ICDs and WCDs is essential, as it has the potential to reshape awareness and treatment strategies for these patients.

Advanced glycation end products (AGEs) accumulate in the plasma of pregnant women with hyperglycemia, potentially inducing oxidative stress and fetal developmental abnormalities. Although intrauterine hyperglycemia has been implicated in excessive fetal growth, the effects of maternal AGEs on fetal development remain unclear. We evaluated the differentiation regulators and cellular signaling in the skeletal muscles of infants born to control mothers (ICM), diabetic mothers (IDM), and diabetic mothers supplemented with either cis-palmitoleic acid (CPA) or trans-palmitoleic acid (TPA).

Background: Endometriosis is a multifaceted gynecological condition that poses diagnostic challenges and affects a significant number of women worldwide, leading to pain, infertility, and a reduction in patient quality of life (QoL). Traditional diagnostic methods, such as the revised American Society for Reproductive Medicine (r-ASRM) classification, have limitations, particularly in preoperative settings. The Numerical Multi-Scoring System of Endometriosis (NMS-E) has been proposed to address these shortcomings by providing a comprehensive preoperative diagnostic tool that integrates findings from pelvic examinations and transvaginal ultrasonography.

Introduction: A neurotrophic tropomyosin receptor kinase (NTRK)-tyrosine kinase inhibitor (TKI) has shown dramatic efficacy against malignant tumors harboring an NTRK fusion gene. However, almost all tumors eventually acquire resistance to NTRK-TKIs.
Method: To investigate the mechanism of resistance to NTRK-TKIs, we established cells resistant to three types of NTRK-TKIs (larotrectinib, entrectinib, and selitrectinib) using KM12 colon cancer cells with a TPM3-NTRK1 rearrangement.

Background: Assessing pupil size and reactivity is the standard of care in neurocritically ill patients. Anisocoria observed in critically ill patients often prompts further investigation and treatment. This study explores anisocoria at rest and after light stimulus determined using quantitative pupillometry as a predictor of discharge modified Rankin Scale (mRS) scores.

Objective: Widespread use of immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) in cancer treatment has led to an increase in the number of reported cases of immunotherapy-related endocrinopathies. This study aimed to analyze and compare human leukocyte antigen (HLA) signatures associated with ICI-induced type 1 diabetes (ICI-T1D) and isolated adrenocorticotropic hormone deficiency (ICI-IAD) in patients with both conditions.
Methods: HLA signatures were examined for their frequencies of occurrence in 22 patients with ICI-T1D without concurrent IAD, including 16 patients from nationwide reports (ICI-T1D group) and 14 patients with ICI-IAD without concurrent T1D (ICI-IAD group).

Backgrounds: Anastomotic leakage (AL) represents a major complication after rectal low anterior resection (LAR). Transanal drainage tube (TDT) placement offers a potential strategy for AL prevention; however, its efficacy and safety remain contentious.
Methods: A systematic review and meta-analysis were used to evaluate the influence of TDT subsequent to LAR as part of the revision of the surgical site infection prevention guidelines of the Japanese Society of Surgical Infectious Diseases (PROSPERO registration; CRD42023476655).

Background: Pilonidal sinus can be treated with excision and flap reconstruction, but treatment is often complicated by wound dehiscence, infection, and recurrence. Understanding the mechanical forces on the sacrococcygeal area during posture change could help guide optimal flap choice.
Methods: Sixteen volunteers underwent measurements of skin-stretching, pressure, and shear stress on the sacrum when sitting relative to standing.

Background: Surgical site infections (SSIs) are common complications after abdominal surgery.
Aim: To compare which suture devices could reduce the incidence of incisional surgical site infections (SSIs) after gastrointestinal surgery using a systematic review and network meta-analysis.
Methods: The CENTRAL, PubMed, and ICHUSHI-Web databases were searched from January 1, 2000, to December 31, 2022, for randomized clinical trials (RCTs) comparing the incidence of incisional SSI after gastrointestinal surgery among patients treated with different surgical suture devices, including non-absorbable sutures, absorbable sutures, skin staplers, and tissue adhesives (last searched in August 23, 2023).

Light chain proximal tubulopathy (LCPT) is a rare type of paraprotein-related disease (PRDs) characterized by monoclonal free light chain (FLC) deposition in proximal tubular epithelial cells (PTECs). A diagnosis of LCPT requires identification of FLC deposition in PTECs; however, FLC luminescence defects in immunofluorescence staining using frozen tissue (IF-F), regarded as "masked LCPT", are occasionally encountered. We describe two cases of focal masked LCPT in monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance (MGUS) or smoldering multiple myeloma (SMM) diagnosed by IF in formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tissue sections following pronase digestion (IF-P) rather than by IF-F.

Simple radiography is the most frequently and widely available technology to examine bone pathologies. Computed tomography (CT) can evaluate pathologies more accurately in multiple planes and three dimensions; however, radiation exposure is much higher than with simple radiography. In addition, diagnostic ability is decreased for both technologies when metal devices are present.

Painless thyroiditis, which is rare in children, exhibits the characteristic sequence of hyperthyroidism, including aggressive and disruptive behaviors. Unlike subacute thyroiditis or Graves' disease, painless thyroiditis is challenging to diagnose because of its mild symptoms and minimal or absent physical findings. Moreover, aggressive and disruptive behaviors in children with psychiatric disorders may be misconstrued as exacerbation of underlying symptoms.
