Article Synopsis
  • The study evaluates the effectiveness of the Predicting Arrhythmic evenT (PAT) score in predicting future ventricular fibrillation (VF) events in patients with Brugada syndrome (BrS), particularly those without prior VF.
  • Researchers analyzed 413 patients from 59 hospitals in Japan over a follow-up period of about 107 months, finding that while 13.1% experienced VF events, the PAT score didn't effectively differentiate risk in those without a history of VF.
  • Overall, the study concluded that the PAT score is not a reliable tool for predicting future VF events in BrS patients without previous VF, indicating a need for further validation of risk stratification models.

Purpose: Computational simulation of phase-contrast MRI (PC-MRI) is an attractive way to physically interpret properties and errors in MRI-reconstructed flow velocity fields. Recent studies have developed PC-MRI simulators that solve the Bloch equation, with the magnetization transport being modeled using a Lagrangian approach. Because this method expresses the magnetization as spatial distribution of particles, influences of particle densities and their spatial uniformities on numerical accuracy are well known.

Article Synopsis
  • The study focuses on the four key driver genes (KRAS, CDKN2A, TP53, SMAD4) in pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC), with KRAS and TP53 being the most common mutations.
  • Researchers developed organoids with KRAS mutations and TP53 loss of function to analyze how these mutations affect cellular processes, specifically highlighting enhanced glycolysis in the double-mutant organoids.
  • They identified triosephosphate isomerase (TPI1) as a potential therapeutic target, as its loss decreased cell proliferation in PDAC cells with TP53 mutations, present in about 70% of PDAC patients.

We present two cases of middle-aged men who developed Fanconi syndrome and renal dysfunction after consuming "foods with functional claims (FFC)" containing red yeast rice. In the first case, the patient had consumed an FFC for 1 year and another FFC suspected to have contained nephrotoxin for 3 weeks; kidney biopsy performed during the acute phase of renal injury showed severe acute tubular necrosis and tubular cell regeneration. He achieved near-complete recovery 40 days after the FFC was discontinued.

Department of Electrical Engineering and Bioscience, Graduate School of Advanced Science and Engineering, Waseda University, Tokyo 169-8555, Japan.

Motivation: Antibiotic resistance has emerged as a major global health threat, with an increasing number of bacterial infections becoming difficult to treat. Predicting the underlying resistance mechanisms of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) is crucial for understanding and combating this problem. However, existing methods struggle to accurately predict resistance mechanisms for ARGs with low similarity to known sequences and lack sufficient interpretability of the prediction models.

In 2010, the United States Human and Health Services (US HHS) and the European Union's (EU) Directorate General for Communications Networks, Content and Technology signed a memorandum of understanding to stimulate cooperation surrounding health-related information communications technology. The key project that emerged from this agreement is the (IPS), intended to provide succinct clinically relevant patient summaries, which are generalizable and condition-independent, that can be readily used by all clinicians for the care of patients. Although allergies are included in the main information required by the IPS library and framework, it is misrepresented which leads to underdiagnosis or misdiagnosis of patients suffering from allergic and hypersensitivity conditions (A/H).

  • Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a chronic skin disease characterized by intense itching, and new treatments like dupilumab have been developed but predicting the right treatment for each patient is challenging.
  • A study involving 110 AD patients aimed to identify factors and biomarkers that could indicate how well patients might respond to dupilumab, using various scales for assessment.
  • Findings showed that higher baseline serum LDH levels and certain comorbidities, like food allergies, were linked to poorer treatment outcomes, suggesting these could help guide treatment decisions for AD patients.

Pain is perceived not only by personal experience but also vicariously. Pain empathy is the ability to share and understand other's intentions and emotions in their painful conditions, which can be divided into cognitive and emotional empathy. It remains unclear how centrally acting analgesics would modulate brain activity related to pain empathy and which component of pain empathy would be altered by analgesics.

Objective: To develop a multivariable model for predicting the progression of systemic sclerosis-associated interstitial lung disease (SSc-ILD) over 52 weeks.

Methods: We used logistic regression models to analyse associations between candidate predictors assessed at baseline and progression of SSc-ILD (absolute decline in forced vital capacity (FVC) % predicted >5% or death) over 52 weeks in the placebo group of the SENSCIS trial. Analyses were performed in the overall placebo group and in a subgroup with early and/or inflammatory SSc and/or severe skin fibrosis (<18 months since first non-Raynaud symptom, elevated inflammatory markers, and/or modified Rodnan skin score (mRSS) >18) at baseline.
