Laboratory of Environmental Toxicology and Carcinogenesis, Nihon University School of Pharmacy, Chiba 274-8555, Japan; Division of Cancer Pathophysiology, National Cancer Center Research Institute, Tokyo 104-0045, Japan. Electronic address:

Safety evaluation is essential for the development of chemical substances. Since in vivo safety evaluation tests, such as carcinogenesis tests, require long-term observation using large numbers of experimental animals, it is necessary to develop alternative methods that can predict genotoxicity/carcinogenicity in the short term, taking into account the 3Rs (replacement, reduction, and refinement). We established a prediction model of the hepatotoxicity of chemicals using a DNA adductome, which is a comprehensive analysis of DNA adducts that may be used as an indicator of DNA damage in the liver.

Measurement of thyroglobulin in fine-needle aspirates (FNA-Tg) is useful for the diagnosis of lymph node metastasis in thyroid carcinoma; however, the cutoff value remains unclear, particularly for the differential diagnosis of neck masses. To evaluate the cutoff value of FNA-Tg, we conducted a retrospective study of patients with neck masses outside the thyroid who pre-operatively underwent both FNAC and FNA-Tg, followed by pathological examination at our hospital from October 2015 to September 2020. The cutoff value of FNA-Tg was calculated using the receiver operating characteristic curve.

Mini Review: the non-neuronal cardiac cholinergic system in type-2 diabetes mellitus.

Front Cardiovasc Med

September 2024

Department of Bioregulatory Science, Graduate School of Medicine, Nippon Medical School, Tokyo, Japan.

Diabetic heart disease remains the leading cause of death in individuals with type-2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Both insulin resistance and metabolic derangement, hallmark features of T2DM, develop early and progressively impair cardiovascular function. These factors result in altered cardiac metabolism and energetics, as well as coronary vascular dysfunction, among other consequences.

Background: Cow's milk allergy (CMA) is the most complex and common food allergy in infants. Elimination of cow's milk from the diet and replacement with a specialized formula for infants with cow's milk allergy who cannot be breastfed is an established approach to minimize the risk of severe allergic reactions while avoiding nutritional deficiencies. Given the availability of multiple options, such as extensively hydrolyzed cow's milk-based formula (eHF-CM), aminoacid formula (AAF), hydrolyzed rice formula (HRF), and soy formula (SF), there is some uncertainty regarding which formula might represent the most suitable choice with respect to health outcomes.

Department of Biological Sciences, Graduate School of Science, The University of Tokyo, 7-3-1 Hongo, Bunkyo-ku, Tokyo, 113-0033, Japan; Department of Biological Sciences, Faculty of Science and Engineering, Chuo University, 1-13-27 Kasuga, Bunkyo-ku, Tokyo, 112-8551, Japan. Electronic address:

During anuran metamorphosis from herbivorous tadpoles to carnivorous frogs, the gastrointestinal (GI) tract undergoes drastic remodeling, such as the formation of the stomach-intestine boundary and the development of the pyloric sphincter at the posterior end of the stomach. However, the morphogenetic process and molecular mechanisms of how the pyloric sphincter is formed during metamorphosis, instead of during embryogenesis as in amniotes, are largely uninvestigated. Using the African clawed frog Xenopus laevis, we histologically examined the development of the pylorus region from embryonic to froglet stages and performed spatiotemporal gene expression analyses.

From the Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Nippon Medical School Musashi Kosugi Hospital, Kawasaki, Kanagawa, Japan.

Article Synopsis
  • In Japan, there's a need for a standardized treatment algorithm for infantile hemangioma (IH) that weighs effectiveness, side effects, and aesthetic concerns, as current treatment options—oral propranolol and pulsed dye laser—have no out-of-pocket costs for patients.
  • A retrospective study of 156 IH patients showed that using an aesthetic risk assessment helped guide treatment choices based on individual cases, with a high interrater reliability for the risk scoring system.
  • The results indicated that patients who followed the algorithm experienced significantly fewer complications and tended to have shorter treatment times and fewer laser sessions compared to those who did not comply with the algorithm.
