Cerebral revascularization is necessary to treat intracranial arterial stenosis caused by moyamoya disease, atherosclerosis, or large complex aneurysms. Although various donor vascular harvesting methods have been reported safe, there are no reports on the histological evaluation of donor vessels for each disease, despite the variety of diseases wherein vascular anastomosis is required. Pathological findings of the superficial temporal artery (STA), radial artery (RA), occipital artery (OA), and saphenous vein (SV) harvested at the institution were analyzed.

J Pharmacol Exp Ther

March 2021

Department of Cardiovascular Medicine, Nippon Medical School, Tokyo, Japan (M.K., K.M., S.N., H.K., N.S., W.S.); Intensive Care Unit, Nippon Medical School Chiba-Hokusou Hospital, Chiba, Japan (K.A., A.S.); and Department of Cardiovascular Medicine, Tokyo Medical and Dental University, Tokyo, Japan (Y.M.); Mitsukoshi Health and Welfare Foundation, Tokyo, Japan (K.M.).

Article Synopsis
  • β3-Adrenergic receptor expression increases in failing hearts, prompting a study to see if a β3-agonist improves heart function in heart failure models.
  • Mice treated with Angiotensin II (Ang II) showed higher blood pressure and worse heart conditions, but those given the β3-agonist (BRL) had reduced heart stiffness and less cardiac fibrosis.
  • BRL treatment helped improve heart function without affecting blood pressure, suggesting it could be a promising treatment for heart failure with preserved ejection fraction.

Background: There is increasing evidence that a proportion of patients with cardiac sarcoidosis (CS) have atrial arrhythmias (AA). Although 18F-fluorodeoxy-glucose (FDG) uptake in the ventricle on positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) is well studied, FDG uptake in the atrium has not been elucidated in detail.

Objectives: To evaluate FDG uptake in the atrium and its relationship with AA in patients with CS.

Aim: An index that accurately measures intravascular volume is paramount for the optimal resuscitation of sepsis. Selecting an adequate indicator to substitute for central venous pressure (CVP) has remained an issue. The objective of our study was to compare the usefulness of standard early goal-directed therapy (EGDT) with CVP (EGDT-CVP) and modified EGDT with global end-diastolic volume index (GEDI; EGDT-GEDI) for sepsis.

Introduction: Transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) is the gold standard for surgical treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), but it has complications such as bleeding and transurethral resection syndrome. The treatment results of TURP performed by non-Japanese board-certified urologists were examined, and the results were analyzed according to the resection volume to determine how much resection volume was suitable for non-Japanese board-certified urologists.

Materials And Methods: A total of 72 cases that underwent TURP for BPH at our hospital were examined.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examined how geographical factors affect the distribution and composition of coronary plaques in the arteries.
  • Researchers evaluated 30 coronary arteries through advanced imaging techniques, focusing on eccentric plaques found in non-branching areas.
  • Findings revealed that eccentric plaques are more commonly located on the myocardial side compared to the epicardial side, suggesting a link between geographical predisposition and plaque vulnerability in coronary arteries.

Background: Neutrophil elastase plays an important role in the development and progression of acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). Although the selective elastase inhibitor, sivelestat, is widely used in Japan for treating ARDS patients, its effectiveness remains controversial. The aim of the current study was to investigate the effects of sivelestat in ARDS patients with evidence of increased extravascular lung water by re-analyzing a large multicenter study database.

Background: In patients with severe sepsis, depression of cardiac performance is common and is often associated with left ventricular (LV) dilatation to maintain stroke volume. Although it is essential to optimize cardiac preload to maintain tissue perfusion in patients with severe sepsis, the optimal preload remains unknown. This study aimed to evaluate the reliability of global end-diastolic volume index (GEDI) as a parameter of cardiac preload in the early phase of severe sepsis.

Background: 5-Fluorouracil (5-FU) and its derivatives are widely known as some of the most commonly prescribed anticancer drugs, especially for gastrointestinal cancer. Orotate phosphoribosyl transferase (OPRT), dihydropyrimidine dehydrogenase (DPD) and thymidylate synthase (TS) are initial key enzymes in the 5-FU metabolic pathway. The activities of these enzymes may have the potential to affect the chemosensitivity of 5-FU.
