Clin Adv Periodontics

December 2024

Department of Periodontal Medicine, Graduate School of Biomedical and Health Sciences, Hiroshima University, Hiroshima, Japan.

Background: Recombinant human fibroblast growth factor-2 (rhFGF-2) has been shown to effectively promote the formation of new periodontal tissues, and its efficacy has been demonstrated in clinical settings. Moreover, the clinical and radiographic outcomes in the treatment of periodontal infrabony defects can be improved by using rhFGF-2 in combination with a bone substitute. Here, we present a case of four-wall bone defect in a tooth treated by combination regenerative therapy using rhFGF-2 and beta-tricalcium phosphate (β-TCP).

January 2024

Department of Orthopedic Surgery, Nippon Kokan Fukuyama Hospital, 1844 Tsunoshita Daimon-cho, Fukuyama, Hiroshima, 721-0927, Japan.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the impact of hardware removal (HWR) after open-wedge high tibial osteotomy (OWHTO) on postoperative outcomes, specifically focusing on range of motion (ROM), Japan Orthopaedic Association (JOA) scores, and hardware-related complications.
  • Results from 80 knees show significant improvements in the JOA score and flexion angle after HWR, while the visual analogue scale (VAS) score and extension angle remained unchanged.
  • Logistic regression identified lower preoperative Kellgren-Lawrence (KL) grades and flexion angles as predictors of improvement post-HWR.

Key Clinical Message: Endodontists should be aware that some maxillary second molars can have more than three roots. If any unusual anatomical features are detected during dental radiography or endodontic procedures, it is necessary to conduct cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) scanning to prevent procedural mishaps.

Abstract: CBCT can provide three-dimensional reconstructed images of the root canal system.

The i-gel, a popular second-generation supraglottic airway device, has been used in a variety of airway management situations, including as an alternative to tracheal intubation for general anesthesia, rescue in difficult airway settings, and out-of-hospital cardiac arrest resuscitation. We aimed to investigate the number of experiences needed to achieve a rapid, highly successful first attempt i-gel insertion in novices with a cumulative sum analysis. We also looked at how learning affected success rates, insertion time, and bleeding and reflex (limb movement, frowning face, or coughing) incidences.

Department of Medical Science and Technology, Hiroshima International University, Higashi-hiroshima, Hiroshima, 739-2695, Japan; Department of Gastroenterology, Nippon Kokan Fukuyama Hospital, Fukuyama, Hiroshima, 721-0927, Japan. Electronic address:

Netrin-1, the protein product of the NTN1 gene, is an axon guidance molecule implicated in regulation of cell survival and tumorigenesis. Expression of the netrin-1 receptors deleted in colorectal cancer (DCC) and uncoordinated 5 homolog (UNC5H) is frequently silenced in colorectal cancer (CRC) by either loss of heterozygosity or epigenetic mechanisms. However, netrin-1 expression and regulation in CRC are mostly unknown.

Endodontic Approach and Periodontal Regenerative Therapy for a Mandibular Right Central Incisor Affected by a Perforation and Cemental Tear.

Int J Periodontics Restorative Dent

September 2021

Department of Biological Endodontics, Graduate School of Biomedical and Health Sciences, Hiroshima University, Hiroshima, Japan

A cemental tear involves complete or incomplete separation of the cementum on the root surface along the cementodentinal junction. Because a cemental tear can lead to periodontal breakdown and mimic endodontic and periodontal lesions, diagnosing clinical cases can be difficult and requires special examinations. A 72-year-old woman presented with a localized periodontal defect on the labial and interproximal surfaces of the mandibular right central incisor.

High tibial osteotomy (HTO) procedure is generally contraindicated in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients because synovial inflammation may exacerbate joint damage post-surgery. The natural course of joint destruction in RA changed dramatically with new treatment strategies and the introduction of biologic disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs (bDMARDs). We report the cases of two RA patients who underwent HTO and whose disease activities were well controlled by bDMARDs.
