The commensal microbiota of the finger-skin before and after ethanol disinfection were characterized and compared with the microbes isolated from the surface of smartphone touchscreens. The number of bacteria on the smartphone touchscreens was low, similar to that on the fingers after ethanol disinfection, suggesting that the surface of the touchscreens may not be suitable for the growth of microorganisms, rather than the surface of the fingers. Furthermore, ethanol disinfection reduced the number of bacteria on the finger-skin to 1/13 of the original count before disinfection.

Periodontal disease is an inflammatory disease caused by periodontopathogenic bacteria, the inflammatory response generated against them, and host factors. Furthermore, environmental factors can lead to disease progression. Using lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated human gingival fibroblast (HGF), this study investigated the bioactivity of HGF after exposure to hesperidin (Hesp) and the anti-inflammatory activity of Hesp against early periodontitis.

To explore the potential storage and safety of drinking leftover bottled tea beverages from various manufacturers after direct drinking from bottles, we conducted a screening experiment on the growth of salivary bacteria in plastic bottles of tea. The diluted saliva samples from 10 participants were inoculated into the test bottled beverages, which resulted in bacteria, particularly former members of the genus Lactobacillus, growing in some green tea beverages with a neutral pH. In contrast, tea beverages with less bacterial growth contained Streptococcus spp.

Early peri-implant disease detection remains difficult. Enamel matrix derivative (EMD), which is used for periodontal tissue regeneration, promotes leukocyte chemotactic factor and adhesion molecule expression in vascular endothelial cells. We hypothesized that stimulating vascular endothelial cells with EMD would induce an inflammatory response in the peri-implant mucosa, enabling early peri-implant infection detection.

Taste bud cells are classified into four types by their ultrastructural features. Immunohistochemical detection of taste-signaling molecules is used to distinguish cell types of taste bud cells; however, the characteristics of taste cell types such as the immunoreactivity for taste-signaling molecules have long remained unclear. We investigated the detailed characteristics of taste cells in rat vallate taste buds by electron microscopy and immunohistochemistry for gustducin, neural cell adhesion molecule (NCAM) and vesicle-associated membrane protein 2 (VAMP2), which are known as markers of Type II cells, Type III cells and both cell types, respectively.

Non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), caused by fat buildup, can lead to liver inflammation and damage. Elucidation of the spatial distribution of fibrotic tissue in the fatty liver in NASH can be immensely useful to understand its pathogenesis. Thus, we developed a novel serial section-3D (SS3D) technique that combines high-resolution image acquisition with 3D construction software, which enabled highly detailed analysis of the mouse liver and extraction and quantification of stained tissues.

Owing to its desirable ability to fabricate complex shapes, three-dimensional printing is preferred over casting for manufacturing dentures. Furthermore, titanium is widely used in dental implants and dentures because of its high corrosion resistance, biocompatibility, strength, and low density. In this study, we aimed to develop a new metal denture material from three-dimensional-printed (3DP) to achieve lighter weight and greater strength than those of PMMA dentures.
