Article Synopsis
  • The study examined joint effusion in patients with temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) that involved disc displacement, using MRI images of 97 temporomandibular joints (TMJs).
  • Of the TMJs evaluated, joint effusion was observed in 70 cases, primarily in the superior articular cavity, and the presence of myofascial or TMJ pain did not affect the occurrence of effusion.
  • The findings indicated that joint effusion is more prevalent in cases of disc displacement without reduction and that the volume of synovial fluid in effusions was unaffected by the presence of pain.

Odontology

October 2024

Quantitative Diagnostic Imaging, Field of Oral and Maxillofacial Imaging and Histopathological Diagnostics, Course of Applied Science, The Nippon Dental University Graduate School of Life Dentistry at Niigata, 1-8 Hamaura-Cho, Chuo-Ku, Niigata, Niigata, 951-8580, Japan.

Article Synopsis
  • SPECT/CT imaging is utilized to evaluate lesions in the head and neck, specifically looking at the salivary glands in patients with Sjögren's syndrome and submandibular sialolithiasis.
  • A study involving 45 patients revealed that maximum standardized uptake values (SUVs) for salivary glands were significantly lower in those with Sjögren's syndrome compared to those with sialolithiasis, indicating impaired gland function.
  • The findings suggest that SPECT/CT can be an effective tool for assessing salivary gland health and function in these patient groups, aiding in clinical management.

The purpose of this study is to investigate bone SPECT/CT and diffusion-weighted MR imaging (DWI) in medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ), focusing on the correlation between standardized uptake values (SUVs) and apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) values. Twenty-nine patients with MRONJ who underwent SPECT/CT and DWI were included in this study. SUVs (maximum and mean) with SPECT/CT, and ADC values (maximum, mean and minimum) with DWI were analyzed on characteristics in MRONJ, such as stage, location, medication and underlying disease, by Mann-Whitney U test.

Taste bud cells are classified into four types by their ultrastructural features. Immunohistochemical detection of taste-signaling molecules is used to distinguish cell types of taste bud cells; however, the characteristics of taste cell types such as the immunoreactivity for taste-signaling molecules have long remained unclear. We investigated the detailed characteristics of taste cells in rat vallate taste buds by electron microscopy and immunohistochemistry for gustducin, neural cell adhesion molecule (NCAM) and vesicle-associated membrane protein 2 (VAMP2), which are known as markers of Type II cells, Type III cells and both cell types, respectively.

This study aimed to determine the effect of photobiomodulation therapy induced by semiconductor laser irradiation on human dental pulp stem cell (hDPSC) proliferation and their differentiation into odontoblast-like cells (OLCs). The effects of various semiconductor laser irradiation conditions on hDPSCs were examined. Three groups were evaluated: a single laser irradiation at 6 h post-seeding, multiple laser irradiations up to four times every 4 days after the first dose, and a control with no laser irradiation.

This study aimed to assess the impact of different laser irradiation modes and photosensitizer types on the bactericidal efficacy of antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT). Dentin plates were prepared by sectioning the crown dentin of bovine teeth infected with (n = 11). Nine aPDTs involving the combination of three 1% solutions of photosensitizers (brilliant blue, BB; acid red, AR; and methylene blue, MB) and three irradiation modes of semiconductor lasers (50 mW for 120 s, 100 mW for 60 s, and 200 mW for 30 s) were performed for each infected dentin plate, and the control consisted of the specimens not applied with aPDT.

Development of lightweight and high-strength hollow titanium-plated denture material using three-dimensional printing.

Odontology

October 2024

Course of Applied Science, Field of Developmental Science of Oral Biomaterials, The Nippon Dental University Graduate School of Life Dentistry at Niigata, 1-8 Hamaura-cho, Chuo-ku, Niigata City, Niigata, 951-8580, Japan.

Owing to its desirable ability to fabricate complex shapes, three-dimensional printing is preferred over casting for manufacturing dentures. Furthermore, titanium is widely used in dental implants and dentures because of its high corrosion resistance, biocompatibility, strength, and low density. In this study, we aimed to develop a new metal denture material from three-dimensional-printed (3DP) to achieve lighter weight and greater strength than those of PMMA dentures.

Article Synopsis
  • Immune checkpoint inhibitors can effectively treat recurrent and metastatic head and neck cancers, but they come with risks of immune-related adverse events (irAEs) due to systemic administration.
  • A study was conducted where tumor-bearing mice received either a standard dose or a low local dose of PD-L1 antibodies to evaluate their antitumor efficacy and immune response.
  • Results showed that the local low-dose treatment was just as effective as the systemic standard-dose treatment in reducing tumors, with increased levels of important immune proteins in the low-dose group, indicating a promising strategy for treating oral squamous cell carcinoma.

Stimulation of the center of the lateral reticular nucleus suppresses the swallowing reflex in rats.

Neurosci Lett

January 2023

Clinical Examination, Field of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and Systemic Medicine, Course of Clinical Science, The Nippon Dental University Graduate School of Life Dentistry at Niigata, 1-8 Hamaura-cho, Chuo-ku, Niigata 951-8580, Japan; Department of Internal Medicine, The Nippon Dental University School of Life Dentistry at Niigata, 1-8 Hamaura-cho, Chuo-ku, Niigata 951-8580, Japan.

Morphological studies have demonstrated that the lateral reticular nucleus (LRt) receives fibers projected from sites that are related to control of the swallowing reflex. Although the LRt may therefore be related to control of the swallowing reflex, the functional role of the LRt in the swallowing reflex remains unknown. The present study examined whether the swallowing reflex is modulated by stimulation of the LRt.
