Emicizumab in Children with Severe Hemophilia A.

Objectives: To assess the effectiveness and tolerability of emicizumab prophylaxis in hemophilia A (HA). Emicizumab is a novel therapeutic drug which is the first and only non-factor replacement agent licensed for use in people with HA.

Methods: Pediatric patients aged 1 mo to 12 y with severe HA and frequent / life threatening bleeding events, with or without coagulation protein factor VIII inhibitors were enrolled (n = 18) in this observational pre-post study.

A Study of the Prevalence of Anemia in Children With Severe Acute Malnutrition at a Pediatric Tertiary Care Hospital in South India.

Introduction In developing countries such as India, severe acute malnutrition (SAM) has been a cause for great concern in the pediatric population. SAM is associated with significant morbidity and mortality in children less than 60 months of age and leaves them vulnerable to diseases due to a decrease in immunological response. Children with SAM are prone to infections, and due to nutritional deficiency, many have anemia which may be a direct or indirect cause of morbidity and mortality.

Judicious Transfusion of Platelets Among Neonates: A Systematic Review.

In newborns, especially premature babies, there is a high association between thrombocytopenia and bleeding, particularly intraventricular hemorrhage, which may be due to immaturity. It was usual clinical practice that neonates should be transfused with higher platelet counts than older children or adults to reduce their risk of bleeding. However, after keen observations, we noticed that bleeding and mortality were more common in newborns who received more platelet transfusions.

Hypothyroidism and Its Impact on Menstrual Irregularities in Reproductive-Age Women: A Comprehensive Analysis at a Tertiary Care Center.

Background: Hypothyroidism is known to affect a wide range of physiological systems, including menstrual function, in women of reproductive age. This study aims to comprehensively analyze the association between hypothyroidism and menstrual irregularities in women attending a tertiary care center.

Methods: The study included 120 women aged 18-45 who presented with menstrual abnormalities.

Background: India aims to eliminate rubella and congenital rubella syndrome (CRS) by 2023. We conducted serosurveys among pregnant women to monitor the trend of rubella immunity and estimate the CRS burden in India following a nationwide measles and rubella vaccination campaign.

Methods: We surveyed pregnant women at 13 sentinel sites across India from Aug to Oct 2022 to estimate seroprevalence of rubella IgG antibodies.

Rural Versus Urban Mothers' Microbiome Difference and Its Effect on Neonates: A Systematic Review.

The growth and development of microorganisms are stimulated by external stimuli. Urbanization has changed the macroenvironment and individual microenvironmental factors such as smoking, alcohol, and diet, which can alter the microbiota and influence disease in the mother and child. However, the microbiome difference between rural and urban mothers and its effect on neonates have received little attention, as per sources; we have not found any systematic review.

Effect of duration of sodium valproate therapy on bone mineral density and vitamin D levels.

Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the impact of prolonged sodium valproate use on bone mineral density (BMD) and Vitamin D levels in pediatric epilepsy patients.

Methods: In a cross-sectional study conducted at the Epilepsy Clinic of Niloufer Hospital, Hyderabad, India, 50 pediatric patients (aged 4-10 years) were recruited. The cohort comprised 30 epilepsy patients on sodium valproate treatment (cases) and 20 healthy siblings without epilepsy or valproate use (controls).

Impact of Early Bonding During the Maternal Sensitive Period on Long-Term Effects: A Systematic Review.

This research project examines the long-term effects of maternal-neonatal bonding during a mother's "sensitive period." The review explores how early contact between a mother and her newborn can affect their psychosocial and emotional well-being in the future. Within an hour after birth, oxytocin levels increase for mothers, while catecholamine surges enhance neonates' memory retention to encourage immediate skin-to-skin contact (SSC), which promotes breastfeeding with benefits, such as quicker placenta expulsion, less bleeding, and lower stress.

A phase III randomized-controlled study of safety and immunogenicity of DTwP-HepB-IPV-Hib vaccine (HEXASIIL) in infants.

A fully liquid hexavalent containing Diphtheria (D), Tetanus (T) toxoids, whole cell Pertussis (wP), Hepatitis B (Hep B), type 1, 2, 3 of inactivated poliovirus (IPV) and Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib) conjugate vaccine (DTwP-HepB-IPV-Hib vaccine, HEXASIIL) was tested for lot-to-lot consistency and non-inferiority against licensed DTwP-HepB-Hib + IPV in an open label, randomized Phase II/III study. In Phase III part, healthy infants received DTwP-HepB-IPV-Hib or DTwP-HepB-Hib + IPV vaccines at 6, 10 and 14 weeks of age. Palliative Care for Newborns in India: Patterns of Care in a Neonatal Palliative Care Program at a Tertiary Government Children's Hospital.

Neonatal palliative care is a specialized area within children's palliative care, which focusses on the needs of infants with life-limiting or life-threatening conditions. Nearly one quarter of global neonatal deaths occur in India, where neonatal palliative care evidence is limited. This study describes the development and implementation of a neonatal palliative care program within a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) at a government hospital, describing the implementing an 8-month pilot palliative care program for neonates, including the patterns of care, and barriers and enablers of success.

A Systematic Review: Is Early Fluid Restriction in Preterm Neonates Going to Prevent Bronchopulmonary Dysplasia?

Preterm birth causes constant challenges, with bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) being a major concern. Immediately after birth, it takes time to establish feeding between the mother and the premature baby. During this time, the telological shifting of fluid from extracellular space to intracellular space will help the baby; this transition should be smooth.

Indian Academy of Pediatrics (IAP) Advisory Committee on Vaccines and Immunization Practices (ACVIP): Recommended Immunization Schedule (2023) and Update on Immunization for Children Aged 0 Through 18 Years.

Justification: In view of new developments in vaccinology and the availability of new vaccines, there is a need to revise/review the existing immunization recommendations.

Process: The Advisory Committee on Vaccines and Immunization Practices (ACVIP) of Indian Academy of Pediatrics (IAP) had a physical meeting on March 25, 2023, at Vaccicon, Kolkata, followed by online meetings to discuss the updates and new recommendations. Opinion of each member was sought on the various recommendations and updates, following which an evidence-based consensus was reached.

A systematic review has been conducted to effectively acknowledge how enteral and parenteral early nutrition affect the growth and progression of ROP. The study summarizes recent findings from various sources to give insight into the relationship between dietary practices and ROP risks.

Comparison of the immunogenicity and safety of Euvichol-Plus with Shanchol in healthy Indian adults and children: an open-label, randomised, multicentre, non-inferiority, parallel-group, phase 3 trial.

Background: Considering the cholera menace in India and to seek licensure of the oral cholera vaccine (OCV), Euvichol-Plus, we conducted a clinical trial to compare the immunogenicity and safety of Euvichol-Plus with Shanchol in healthy Indian adults and children.

Methods: This phase 3, open-label, multicentre, randomised, non-inferiority, parallel-group, comparative study was conducted at seven sites across India involving 416 healthy adults (aged ≥18-60 years) and children (aged ≥1 to <18 years). Healthy individuals who agreed to participate through a voluntary written informed consent form along with oral or written assent (for children aged 7-18 years) were included.

Role of Perfusion Index and Pulse Variability Index in the Assessment of Neonatal Hemodynamics: A Systematic Review.

Hemodynamic monitoring of neonates is crucial because neonates are easily and acutely susceptible to hemodynamic disturbances. As such, non-invasive monitoring of hemodynamics is preferable. It has been postulated that non-invasive pulse oximetry determines the perfusion index and pulse variability index and provides accurate measurements to predict hemodynamic changes in preterm or term infants.

Intermittent Hypoxia in Preterm Neonates and Its Effect on Neonatal Morbidity and Mortality: A Systematic Review.

The goal of the present systematic review was to investigate the occurrence patterns of intermittent hypoxemia in newborns throughout the early postnatal period as well as the link between neonatal intermittent hypoxemia exposure and harmful consequences such as neonatal morbidity and death. We collected data from 2014 to 2023 using several abstracting, referencing, and indexing database libraries in the field of medical sciences. A total of 715 papers were evaluated by both authors, and only seven articles met the specified review criteria after a thorough analysis.

Outcomes of Neonatal Resuscitation With and Without an Intact Umbilical Cord: A Meta-Analysis.

Around the world, very few babies require a more intensive resuscitative effort for stabilization. The optimal timing of an intact umbilical cord to help with resuscitation is controversial. Background And Aims: Emergence delirium (ED) is a common complication after general anaesthesia (GA) in children, with an incidence of 2%-80%. This study evaluated the incidence and risk factors for ED in children undergoing surgery under GA.

Methods: This observational, prospective study was conducted in 336 children of either gender aged 2-13 years scheduled for surgeries under GA.

Background: The phenotypical profile of cardiovascular malformations in patients with congenital rubella syndrome (CRS) is varied. We aimed to describe the profile of cardiac defects among CRS patients detected in the sentinel CRS surveillance in India during 2016-22.

Methods: Sentinel sites enrolled infants with suspected CRS based on presence of cardiac defects, hearing impairment, eye signs, or maternal history of febrile rash illness.
