Epigenetic regulation defines the commitment and potential of cells, including the limitations in their competence to respond to inducing signals. This review discusses the developmental origins of chromatin state in Xenopus and other vertebrate species and provides an overview of its use in genome annotation. In most metazoans the embryonic genome is transcriptionally quiescent after fertilization.

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a common autoimmune disease leading to profound disability and premature death. Although a role for FcgammaRs and TLRs is accepted, their precise involvement remains to be elucidated. FcgammaRIIb is an inhibitory FcR important in the maintenance of tolerance.

The deletion 9p syndrome is caused by a constitutional monosomy of part of the short arm of chromosome 9. It is clinically characterized by dysmorphic facial features (trigonocephaly, midface hypoplasia, and long philtrum), hypotonia and mental retardation. Deletion 9p is known to be heterogeneous and exhibits variable deletion sizes.

Background: Dendritic cells (DCs) are the most potent antigen-presenting cells of the immune system. Clinical trials have demonstrated that mature DCs loaded with tumor-associated antigens can induce tumor-specific immune responses. Theoretically, pediatric patients are excellent candidates for immunotherapy since their immune system is more potent compared to adults.

Primary nocturnal enuresis (PNE) is a common problem in childhood and adolescence. Although various treatments are highly effective, a common underlying hypothesis on the pathogenesis is lacking. The success of desmopressin, a synthetic analogue of the antidiuretic hormone vasopressin, has been attributed to increased renal water reabsorption that is mediated by activation of the renal vasopressin V2 receptor (V2R).

CXCL16 acts as a scavenger receptor for oxLDL in its membrane-bound form and induces migration of activated T cells in its soluble form. Due to these properties, CXCL16 has been suggested to play a role in both atherosclerosis and rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Our aim was to evaluate the contribution of soluble CXCL16 to the scavenging of oxLDL and its potential as a marker for cardiovascular disease (CVD) in patients with RA.

C type lectins recognize pathogens by binding to pathogen-specific carbohydrate residues. The finding reported by Rogers et al. (2005) in this issue of Immunity, that ligand binding by the C type lectin Dectin-1 leads to recruitment of the tyrosine kinase Syk and is critical to subsequent cytokine production by the cell, will surely inspire further research on the mechanisms of carbohydrate receptor signaling.
