Background And Objectives: Previous reports suggest that several serum biomarkers play roles in the pathogenesis, inflammatory response, and oxidative stress in periodontitis caused by bacterial infections, linking chronic periodontitis to atherosclerotic vascular disease (ASVD). The aim of this preliminary study was to investigate, in a Japanese cross-sectional community survey, potential serum biomarkers of periodontitis that are associated with ASVD and chronic periodontitis.
Material And Methods: The study cohort included a total of 108 male subjects who underwent annual health examinations.

Background: This study aimed to identify the factors affecting postoperative rotational limb alignment of the tibia relative to the femur. We hypothesized that not only component positions but also several intrinsic factors were associated with postoperative rotational limb alignment.
Methods: This study included 99 knees (90 women and 9 men) with a mean age of 77 ± 6 years.

Tuberoinfundibular dopaminergic (TIDA) neurons in the arcuate nucleus (ARC) of the hypothalamus play a role in inhibiting prolactin (PRL) secretion from the anterior pituitary. PRL is involved in a variety of behaviors, including feeding. Consequently, we hypothesized that fasting might reduce the activity of TIDA neurons, which might alter PRL secretion.

Background: Malignancy during pregnancy has become a significant cause of maternal death in developed countries, likely due to both an older pregnant population, and increases of cervical cancer in younger women. Our aim is to investigate the clinical aspects of malignancy during pregnancy in Japan and to use this information to identify opportunities for earlier detection and treatment.
Methods: We provided a questionnaire to 1508 secondary or tertiary care hospitals in Japan.

The first trial was registered in 2015 in four institutions to which some registration committee members belonged. We analyzed the information of 830 Japanese pedigrees, who underwent BRCA1/2 genetic testing, including mutation carriers with BRCA1 (N = 127) and BRCA2 (N = 115), and their families.

Background: Contrary to observations of decreasing rates in Western nations for the past 2 decades, age-adjusted rates of hip fracture in the general population in Japan have continually increased. This study aimed to analyze recent changes in trends of hip fracture incidence among Japanese dialysis patients between 2008 and 2013.
Study Design, Setting, & Participants: Using data from the Japanese Society for Dialysis Therapy Renal Data Registry database from 2007 to 2013, we created a point-prevalent study cohort for each study year.
Aim: The purpose of this study is to describe our experience with patients who fell from rooftops while clearing snow. The falls occurred in rural areas that receive heavy snowfall and are undergoing depopulation and an increasing proportion of elderly residents.
Methods: A retrospective observational chart review was carried out at the sole hospital providing emergency services in a rural heavy snow area in Japan.

GU-AG consensus sequences are used for intron recognition in the majority of cases of pre-mRNA splicing in eukaryotes. Mutations at splice junctions often cause exon skipping, short deletions, or insertions in the mature mRNA, underlying one common molecular mechanism of genetic diseases. Using N-ethyl-N-nitrosourea, a novel recessive mutation named seal was produced, associated with fragile bones and susceptibility to fractures (spine and limbs).

Whereas most of studies investigating relationship between oral health and atherosclerosis have focused on periodontitis, very few of them were examined about occlusal status of natural teeth which possibly influence dietary habit. The primary aim of this cross-sectional study was to investigate the association between the occlusal support of posterior teeth and the prevalence of atherosclerosis in community-dwelling septuagenarians. Also, the second aim was to test the hypothesis that the intake of key nutrients for atherosclerosis prevention would have a mediating effect on the relationship between the occlusal status and atherosclerosis.

Background: Epidemiology and outcomes of Japanese patients with advanced chronic kidney disease (CKD)-an estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) < 45 ml/min/1.73 m-has remained largely unexamined.
Methods: We conducted a nationwide survey to determine the distribution of Japanese CKD patients, and are conducting a cohort study of these patients.

Background And Objectives: Prior studies have shown that sevelamer attenuates progression of arterial calcification and may reduce the risk of death compared with calcium-based phosphate binders. In clinical practice, however, sevelamer is used not only as an alternative but also as an add-on therapy in patients already being treated with calcium-based phosphate binders. We analyzed the Dialysis Outcomes and Practice Patterns Study (DOPPS) data to test the hypothesis that the initiation of sevelamer is associated with improved survival in patients on hemodialysis treated with calcium-based phosphate binders.

Purpose: This purpose of this prospective study was to use a continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) system to evaluate the suitability of our institution's glucose management protocol after cardiovascular surgery and to clarify the impact of glycemic variability on postoperative complications.
Methods: In all, 76 patients who underwent elective cardiovascular surgery and were monitored perioperatively using a CGM system were evaluated. Postoperative glucose management consisted of continuous intravenous insulin infusion (CIII) in the intensive care unit, and subcutaneous insulin injections (SQII) after oral food intake started.

Background: This study was designed to evaluate the feasibility of video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) and to compare the oncologic outcomes of VATS with those of sternotomy in patients with thymoma.
Methods: The clinical outcomes of 2,835 patients with thymic epithelial tumors treated between 1991 and 2010 in 32 Japanese institutions were collected retrospectively. The study compared postoperative complications, positive surgical margins, location of recurrence, and survival in 140 of 142 VATS-treated patients (VATS group) matched with 140 of 1,294 sternotomy-treated patients (ST group) by using propensity scores.

The outcomes of cord blood transplantation with non-irradiated reduced-intensity conditioning for hematological malignancies need to be improved because of graft failure and delayed engraftment. Intrabone infusion of cord blood cells has the potential to resolve the problems. In this phase II study, 21 adult patients with hematological malignancy received intrabone transplantation of serological HLA-A, B, and DR ≥4/6 matched single cord blood with a median number of cryopreserved total nucleated cells of 2.

Gastric cancer (GC) poses a burden to patients across the globe as the third leading cause of cancer deaths worldwide. Incidence of GC is particularly high in Asian countries, which is attributed to the prevalence of Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection and has prompted the establishment of unique treatment strategies.

Background: Venous thromboembolism is one of the general complications following total hip arthroplasty, wherein various preventive treatments have been recommended. Several studies reported that venous thromboembolism incidence after total hip arthroplasty was similar in patients who were administered prophylaxis with a conventional mechanical procedure alone, and those who were administered pharmacological anticoagulation therapy. Therefore, the optimum methods of prophylaxis are still controversial.

Background: Prior research about the sexual and reproductive health of young women has relied mostly on self-reported survey studies. Thus, participant recruitment using Web-based methods can improve sexual and reproductive health research about cervical cancer prevention. In our prior study, we reported that Facebook is a promising way to reach young women for sexual and reproductive health research.

Plasma D-dimer level is clinically useful for diagnosing patients with suspected deep vein thrombosis (DVT). However, the cut-off value for the D-dimer level remains controversial and undetermined with regard to total hip arthroplasty (THA). The objective of this study was to estimate the efficacy of an age- and D-dimer-based index for diagnosing DVTs in asymptomatic cases before THA.

Objective: We aimed to clarify sex- and age-specific differences in three-dimensional and anatomic characteristics of femoral head coverage and acetabular morphology in healthy subjects.
Materials And Methods: The study included 120 healthy subjects (57 male, 63 female), stratified into groups according to age and sex. We used computed tomography data to measure various anatomic alignment parameters describing femoral head coverage and acetabular morphology.
