Background: Iron deficiency is a major contributor to anaemia in chronic kidney diseases. The association of anaemia and iron deficiency with health-related quality of life in Japanese patients with non-dialysis chronic kidney disease has not been examined. In this study, we evaluated anaemia and iron deficiency in patients with chronic kidney disease G3b-5 and examined their associations with health-related quality of life.

Methods: We retrospectively analyzed baseline laboratory data, self-administered diet history questionnaire results, and 10-year mortality rates in 44 patients (26 men, 67.

Context: Defects in MKRN3, DLK1, KISS1, and KISS1R and some disorders, such as Temple syndrome (TS14), cause central precocious puberty (CPP). Recently, pathogenic variants (PVs) in MECP2 have been reported to be associated with CPP.
Objective: We aimed to clarify the contribution of (epi)genetic abnormalities to CPP and clinical and hormonal features in each etiology.

Background: Verruca vulgaris (VV), widely known as warts, is a common benign skin lesion, which is caused by human papilloma virus. In some cases, VV can be developed within the oral cavity. Surgical excision is considered as the most preferred treatment modality for both cutaneous and oral VV which could be challenge to deal with.

Background: Long-leg frontal radiographs of the lower extremities are used to assess knee osteoarthritis. Given the three-dimensional (3D) nature of alignment changes in osteoarthritis, postural alterations in the femur and tibia extend beyond the coronal plane (in-plane) to include the transverse and sagittal planes (out-of-plane). This study investigates the impact of these out-of-plane factors on in-plane knee alignment parameters observed in frontal radiographs.

Objective: Uncoupling protein 2 (UCP2) is an ion/anion transporter in the mitochondrial inner membrane that plays a crucial role in immune response, regulation of oxidative stress, and cellular metabolism. UCP2 polymorphisms are linked to chronic inflammation, obesity, diabetes, heart disease, exercise efficiency, and longevity. Daily step count and number of teeth are modifiable factors that reduce mortality risk, although the role of UCP2 in this mechanism is unknown.

Introduction: Vitamin D deficiency causes osteoporosis, bone mineralization disorders, and osteomalacia. Osteomalacia is diagnosed using blood biochemical tests, clinical symptoms, and imaging; however, accurate detection of mineralization disorders requires tissue observation. We investigated the prevalence of bone mineralization disorders and their relationship with serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25OHD) levels in patients with untreated osteoporosis with femoral neck fractures.

Purpose: Liquid biopsy of cyst fluid in brain tumors has not been extensively studied to date. The present study was performed to see whether diagnostic genetic alterations found in brain tumor tissue DNA could also be detected in cell-free DNA (cfDNA) of cyst fluid in cystic brain tumors.
Methods: Cyst fluid was obtained from 22 patients undergoing surgery for a cystic brain tumor with confirmed genetic alterations in tumor DNA.

Background: Carbapenem is recommended as one of the first-line regimens for ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP), but no recent systematic review has fully investigated its efficacy. This systematic review aims to evaluate the efficacy of carbapenem compared with non-carbapenem for VAP treatment.
Methods: We performed a systematic review and meta-analysis of studies comparing the efficacy and the safety between carbapenem and non-carbapenem with activity to Pseudomonas aeruginosa in the treatment for VAP.

α-Synuclein accumulates in Lewy bodies, and this accumulation is a pathological hallmark of Parkinson's disease (PD). Previous studies have indicated a causal role of α-synuclein in the pathogenesis of PD. However, the molecular and cellular mechanisms of α-synuclein toxicity remain elusive.

Spatiotemporal control of gene expression is important for neural development and function. Here, we show that heterogeneous nuclear ribonucleoprotein (hnRNP) A/B is highly expressed in developing olfactory sensory neurons (OSNs), and its knockout results in reduction in mature OSNs and aberrant targeting of OSN axons to the olfactory bulb. RNA immunoprecipitation analysis reveals that hnRNP A/B binds to a group of mRNAs that are highly related to axon projections and synapse assembly.

The immune checkpoint inhibitor (ICI), nivolumab, has revolutionised the treatment of recurrent and metastatic oral cancer. However, the response rate to ICIs remains low, and identifying predictors of nivolumab response is critical. Although the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) has been suggested as a predictive marker of nivolumab response in patients with various types of cancer, its utility in oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) has not been elucidated.

Objective: Patients with advanced chronic kidney disease (CKD) are generally discouraged from consuming high amounts of vegetables and fruits given the potential risk of hyperkalemia. In the general population, however, lower vegetable and fruit intake is associated with higher mortality. This Japanese hospital-based prospective cohort study including non-CKD and CKD participants examined whether the frequency of vegetable and fruit intake is associated with mortality, and whether the presence of CKD modifies this association.

Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease type 2A (CMT2A) is an axonal neuropathy caused by mutations in the mitofusin 2 (MFN2) gene. MFN2 mutations result in profound mitochondrial abnormalities, but the mechanism underlying the axonal pathology is unknown. Sterile α and Toll/IL-1 receptor motif-containing 1 (SARM1), the central executioner of axon degeneration, can induce neuropathy and is activated by dysfunctional mitochondria.

Purpose: Adherence to oral nutritional supplements (ONS) to prevent weight loss after gastrectomy is problematic. The present study evaluated the impact of super energy-dense ONS (SED ONS; 4 kcal/mL) on glycemic change and energy intake after gastrectomy.
Methods: Gastrectomy patients were placed on continuous glucose monitoring for a 3-day observation period after food intake had been stabilized postoperatively.

Objectives: There is no consensus regarding the impact of population density on the transmission of respiratory viral infections such as COVID-19 and seasonal influenza. Our study aimed to determine the correlation between population density and the incidence and duration of COVID-19 transmission.
Methods: Publicly available data for confirmed COVID-19 cases in Japan, from January 2020 through November 2021, were retrospectively collected.

Background: During gait, healthy knee coronal kinematics of each bony axis and lower extremity alignment are important because they could be useful as reference data for several surgeries and provide clarification of the etiology of diseases around the knee in healthy participants; however, it remains unknown.
Objective: The objective of this study was to clarify the kinematics of lower extremity alignment and the bony axes relative to the ground during gait, focused on the coronal plane, in healthy individuals by applying our unique three-dimensional (3D) motion analysis.
Methods: The study included 21 healthy individuals, including 9 healthy females and 12 healthy males with an average age of 36 ± 17 years.
