Incomplete tendon healing and postponed muscle weakness after Achilles tendon rupture and surgical repair lead to poor performance in patient activities. Although the effectiveness of postoperative early functional rehabilitation has been proven, the priority and each effect of specific methods in early rehabilitation remain unclear. We hypothesized early muscle contraction exercises without joint motion would promote tendon healing and prevent calf muscle atrophy; in contrast, early static stretching after surgical repair would not contribute to tendon healing and induce calf muscle atrophy.

Peripheral nerves exhibit long-term residual motor dysfunction following injury. The length of the denervation period before nerve and muscle reconnection is an important factor in motor function recovery. We aimed to investigate whether repeated nerve crush injuries to the same site every 7 days would preserve the conditioning lesion (CL) response and to determine the number of nerve crush injuries required to create an experimental animal model that would prolong the denervation period while maintaining peripheral nerve continuity.

Objective: Tc-99m N-pyridoxyl-5-methyl-tryptophan (PMT) hepatobiliary scintigraphy has high diagnostic performance for biliary atresia. Our hospital implements standard Tc-99m PMT administration followed by a 6 h static imaging review; booster doses are given in cases requiring 24 h delayed scans. For measurements of exercise intensity, an individual's oxygen uptake (V̇O) is measured with an exhaled gas analyzer that involves a mask, but exercise coaching would benefit if an individual's V̇O could be estimated with more easily obtained predictors. We investigated the predictability of V̇O by electromyography (EMG) of the neck inspiratory muscles. We analyzed the EMG results of the sternocleidomastoid (EMGst) and scalene (EMGsc) muscles of 14 healthy adults who performed a treadmill exercise load test.

As a passive motion and non-invasive treatment, theta-shaking exercise is considered an alternative to traditional active exercise for slowing down brain ageing. Here, we studied the influence of theta-shaking exercise on fibronectin type III domain containing 5/irisin (FNDC5/irisin) in the anterior nucleus of the thalamus, hippocampus, and medial prefrontal cortex (ATN-HPC-MPFC). Further, we assessed memory in senescence-accelerated prone mice (SAMP-10 mice) using a behavioural test to confirm the protective effect of theta-shaking exercise against age-related memory decline.

Our study aimed to elucidate the role of different shunts and provide novel insights into optimal treatment approaches for complete transposition of the great arteries (TGA), which is characterized by unique and complicated circulatory dynamics. We constructed a computational cardiovascular TGA model and manipulated cardiovascular parameters, such as atrial septal defect (ASD) and patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) sizes, to quantify their effects on oxygenation and hemodynamics. In addition, ASD flow patterns were investigated as innovative indications for balloon atrial septostomy (BAS).

Background: Although right ventricular (RV) enlargement may affect RV diastolic dysfunction assessed by end-diastolic forward flow (EDFF) in patients with repaired tetralogy of Fallot (TOF), EDFF may also be modified by left ventricular (LV) hemodynamics. We hypothesized that EDFF is affected by LV hemodynamics, not limited to RV diastolic stiffening.
Methods and results: Among 145 consecutive patients with repaired TOF who underwent catheterization, hemodynamic properties in 47 with consistent EDFF and 75 without EDFF were analyzed.

Methods: Participants were survivors of breast cancer for more than 2 years after primary breast cancer surgery and belonged to self-help groups. The assessment used FACT-B (QOL), HADS (anxiety and depression), SOC (sense of coherence), WHODAS 2.

Human MutT homolog 1 (MTH1), also known as Nudix-type motif 1 (NUDT1), hydrolyzes 8-oxo-dGTP and 2-oxo-dATP with broad substrate recognition and has attracted attention in anticancer therapeutics. Previous studies on MTH1 have proposed that the exchange of the protonation state between Asp119 and Asp120 is essential for the broad substrate recognition of MTH1. We report the draft genome sequence of Bjerkandera adusta Dec 1, a basidiomycete that was isolated from the soil in Yokohama, Japan, using the Illumina HiSeq platform. B. adusta Dec 1 was identified as a fungus that degrades persistent anthraquinone dyes, and the novel peroxidase DyP was responsible for this degradation.

This study was undertaken to investigate the air and the soil radiation levels using a car-borne survey on the main island of Taiwan where no extensive environmental radiation distribution survey had been conducted before. The mean air absorbed dose rate on this island was 57 ± 10 nGy h-1.

Large amounts of anthropogenic radionuclides, such as 134Cs and 137Cs(radiocesium), were released into the atmosphere due to the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant (F1-NPP) accident and were transported into various environments. The soil accumulations of diffused radionuclides are marked by large differences in their horizontal distributions, and the vertical air dose rates vary depending on the topography, altitude and other factors. In this study, soil activity concentrations of eight islands in the Izu Islands, ~334-563 km south of the F1-NPP, were analyzed from both horizontal and vertical perspectives.
