Oxford Centre for Human Brain Activity, University of Oxford, Oxford, United Kingdom; Department of Experimental Psychology, University of Oxford, Oxford, United Kingdom. Electronic address:

Apolipoprotein (APOE) ɛ4 genotype has been identified as a risk factor for late-onset Alzheimer disease (AD). The memory system is mostly involved in AD, and memory deficits represent its key feature. A growing body of studies has focused on the earlier identification of cognitive dysfunctions in younger and older APOE ɛ4 carriers, but investigation on middle-aged individuals remains rare.

Guess who's coming to dinner: Brain signatures of racially biased and politically correct behaviors.

Neuroscience

Psychology Department, University of Milano-Bicocca, Milano, Italy; IRCCS Galeazzi, fMRI Unit, Milano, Italy. Electronic address:

The ability to share feelings with those of someone in pain is affected by the racial difference between the target and the onlooker. A differential empathic activation for race (DEAR effect) in favor of in-group members has been documented in the brain pain matrix. However, we are also capable of unbiased responses that manifest politically correct behaviors toward people of a different race.

The diagnosis of Waldenström macroglobulinaemia (WM) can be challenging given the variety of signs and symptoms patients can present. Furthermore, once the diagnosis of WM is established, the initial evaluation should be thorough as well as appropriately directed. During the 8th International Workshop for WM in London, United Kingdom, a multi-institutional task force was formed to develop consensus recommendations for the diagnosis and initial evaluation of patients with WM.

Background: Severe pulmonary hypertension (PH) is considered to negatively affect the outcome after transcatheter aortic valve replacement. However, a clear understanding of the pattern, evolution, and clinical impact of different grades of PH in this setting is lacking.

Methods And Results: A total of 990 consecutive patients were enrolled in 6 high-volume centers and analyzed as follows: group 1, systolic pulmonary artery pressure (sPAP) <40 mm Hg (346 patients; 35%); group 2, sPAP 40 to 60 mm Hg (426 patients; 43%); and group 3, sPAP >60 mm Hg (218 patients; 22%).

May 2016

Department of Infection & Immunity, Luxembourg Institute of Health, Esch-sur-Alzette, Luxembourg.

Article Synopsis
  • The identification of allergen molecules has enhanced our understanding of IgE-mediated allergic responses and led to the development of component-resolved diagnosis (CRD).
  • The EAACI Molecular Allergology User's Guide (MAUG) details essential information on allergens, diagnostic methods, and the application of singleplex and multiplex IgE tests to better diagnose and manage allergies.
  • The guide also addresses various IgE-mediated allergies, discusses the clinical relevance of cross-reactive allergens, and emphasizes the integration of molecular allergology into practical clinical settings for improved patient management.

Objectives: Our primary aim was to study diabetes mellitus (DM) arising during combination ART (cART) and to attempt to identify associations between these cases and triglycerides (TRG) and the TRG to HDL-cholesterol (TRG/HDL) ratio. Our secondary aim was to analyse the association between DM development and hepatic fibrosis.

Methods: This was a retrospective cohort study.

Background: To assess the impact of comorbidities on long-term all-cause mortality in patients hospitalized with exacerbated signs/symptoms of previously chronic stable HF (AE-CHF).

Methods: 1119 patients admitted for AE-CHF and with NT-proBNP levels >900pg/mL were enrolled. Univariable and multivariable Cox analyses were performed to assess the association of age, gender, hypertension, diabetes, obesity, atrial fibrillation, coronary heart disease (CHD), chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, previous cerebrovascular accidents, chronic liver disease (CLD), thyroid disease, renal impairment (RI), and anemia with 3-year all-cause mortality.

Objectives: In Europe, the age of heart donors is constantly increasing. Ageing of heart donors limits the probability of success of heart transplantation (HTx). The aim of this study is to compare the outcome of patients with advanced heart failure (HF) treated with a continuous-flow left ventricular assist device (CF-LVAD) with indication as bridge to transplantation (BTT) or bridge to candidacy (BTC) versus recipients of HTx with the donor's age above 55 years (HTx with donors >55 years).

Background And Purpose: Lombardia GENS is a multicentre prospective study aimed at diagnosing 5 single-gene disorders associated with stroke (cerebral autosomal dominant arteriopathy with subcortical infarcts and leukoencephalopathy, Fabry disease, MELAS [mitochondrial encephalomyopathy, lactic acidosis, and stroke-like episodes], hereditary cerebral amyloid angiopathy, and Marfan syndrome) by applying diagnostic algorithms specific for each clinically suspected disease

Methods: We enrolled a consecutive series of patients with ischemic or hemorrhagic stroke or transient ischemic attack admitted in stroke units in the Lombardia region participating in the project. Patients were defined as probable when presenting with stroke or transient ischemic attack of unknown etiopathogenic causes, or in the presence of <3 conventional vascular risk factors or young age at onset, or positive familial history or of specific clinical features. Patients fulfilling diagnostic algorithms specific for each monogenic disease (suspected) were referred for genetic analysis.

Introduction: Partial anomalous pulmonary venous return (PAPVR) is an uncommon cause of right ventricular dilation. It may be difficult to identify and often remains undiagnosed.

Methods: We reviewed the database of the Cardiac Magnetic Resonance (CMR) Laboratory of Niguarda Hospital, in order to identify the cases of PAPVR between 2008 and 2014.

This five-site study was performed to assess the reproducibility of ceftaroline MIC and disk results for Staphylococcus aureus. Three commercial broth microdilution, three gradient diffusion and ceftaroline 5μg disk diffusion methods were compared to a reference broth microdilution method against challenge isolates (n = 41) and isolates collected at four European sites (n = 30/site). For four MIC methods (Sensititre and three gradient diffusion methods), 99.

Acute heart failure and/or cardiogenic shock are frequently triggered by ischemic coronary events. Yet, there is a paucity of randomized data on the management of patients with heart failure complicating acute coronary syndrome, as acute coronary syndrome and cardiogenic shock have frequently been defined as exclusion criteria in trials and registries. As a consequence, guideline recommendations are mostly driven by observational studies, even though these patients have a particularly poor prognosis compared to heart failure patients without signs of coronary artery disease.

Purpose: We developed a consensus on best practice in the real-life management of patients with overactive bladder (OAB) with onabotulinumtoxin A (Onabot/A).

Methods: In March 2015, an interdisciplinary conference was convened. Eleven panelists were invited to review the literature, to present their personal experience and to respond to a number of questions from: "when do we propose Onabot/A treatment" to "when do you decide to re-inject a patient?" A summary of findings of the meeting was provided to all panelists for review and approval.

We report the case of a 23-year-old man who developed an acute ST-elevation myocardial infarction secondary to acute thrombotic occlusion of the proximal left anterior descending coronary artery five years after undergoing chemotherapy, radiotherapy, haematopoietic stem cell transplantation for acute lymphoblastic leukaemia and bulky mediastinal mass involving the pleura and pericardium. His medical history also included Graft versus Host Disease developed 13 months after transplantation and acute myocarditis three months before the actual hospital admission. To the best of our knowledge, coronary artery disease as a complication of haematopoietic stem cell transplantation and low-dose mediastinal radiation therapy in young patients has been rarely reported in the medical literature.
